Neutron star cooling - a challenge to the nuclear mean field

The two recent density-dependent versions of the finite-range M3Y interaction (CDM3Y$n$ and M3Y-P$n$) have been probed against the bulk properties of asymmetric nuclear matter (NM) in the nonrelativistic Hartree Fock (HF) formalism. The same HF study has also been done with the famous Skyrme (SLy4) and Gogny (D1S and D1N) interactions which were well tested in the nuclear structure calculations. Our HF results are compared with those given by other many-body calculations like the Dirac-Brueckner Hartree-Fock approach or ab-initio variational calculation using free nucleon-nucleon interaction, and by both the nonrelativistic and relativistic mean-field studies using different model parameters. Although the two considered density-dependent versions of the M3Y interaction were proven to be quite realistic in the nuclear structure or reaction studies, they give two distinct behaviors of the NM symmetry energy at high densities, like the Asy-soft and Asy-stiff scenarios found earlier with other mean-field interactions. As a consequence, we obtain two different behaviors of the proton fraction in the $β$-equilibrium which in turn can imply two drastically different mechanisms for the neutron star cooling. While some preference of the Asy-stiff scenario was found based on predictions of the latest microscopic many-body calculations or empirical NM pressure and isospin diffusion data deduced from heavy-ion collisions, a consistent mean-field description of nuclear structure database is more often given by some Asy-soft type interaction like the Gogny or M3Y-P$n$ ones. Such a dilemma poses an interesting challenge to the modern mean-field approaches.

Relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Density Dependent Meson-Nucleon Couplings

Relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (RHFB) theory with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings is presented. The integro-differential RHFB equations are solved by expanding the different components of the quasi-particle spinors in the complete set of eigen-solutions of the Dirac equations with Woods-Saxon potentials. Using the finite-range Gogny force D1S as an effective interaction in the pairing channel, systematic RHFB calculations are performed for Sn isotopes and N=82 isotones. It is demonstrated that an appropriate description of both mean field and pairing effects can be obtained within RHFB theory with finite range Gogny pairing forces. Better systematics are also found in the regions from the stable to the neutron-rich side with the inclusion of Fock terms, especially in the presence of $ρ$-tensor couplings.

Isospin corrections for superallowed Fermi beta decay in self-consistent relativistic random phase approximation approaches

Self-consistent random phase approximation (RPA) approaches in the relativistic framework are applied to calculate the isospin symmetry-breaking corrections $δ_c$ for the $0^+\to0^+$ superallowed transitions. It is found that the corrections $δ_c$ are sensitive to the proper treatments of the Coulomb mean field, but not so much to specific effective interactions. With these corrections $δ_c$, the nucleus-independent $\mathcal{F}t$ values are obtained in combination with the experimental $ft$ values in the most recent survey and the improved radiative corrections. It is found that the constancy of the $\mathcal{F}t$ values is satisfied for all effective interactions employed. Furthermore, the element $V_{ud}$ and unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix are discussed.

Deformed quasiparticle-random-phase approximation for neutron-rich nuclei using the Skyrme energy density functional

We develop a new framework of the deformed quasiparticle-random-phase approximation (QRPA) where the Skyrme density functional and the density-dependent pairing functional are consistently treated. Numerical applications are carried out for the isovector dipole and the isoscalar quadrupole modes in the spherical $^{20}$O and in the deformed $^{26}$Ne nuclei, and the effect of the momentum dependent terms of the Skyrme effective interaction for the energy-weighted sum rule is discussed. As a further application, we present for the first time the moments of inertia of $^{34}$Mg and $^{36}$Mg using the Thouless-Valatin procedure based on the self-consistent deformed QRPA, and show the applicability of our new calculation scheme not only for the vibrational modes but also for the rotational modes in neutron-rich nuclei.

Spin-isospin resonances: A self-consistent covariant description

For the first time a fully self-consistent charge-exchange relativistic RPA based on the relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) approach is established. The self-consistency is verified by the so-called isobaric analog state (IAS) check. The excitation properties and the non-energy weighted sum rules of two important charge-exchange excitation modes, the Gamow-Teller resonance (GTR) and the spin-dipole resonance (SDR), are well reproduced in the doubly magic nuclei $^{48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb without readjustment of the particle-hole residual interaction. The dominant contribution of the exchange diagrams is demonstrated.

A mean field study of single-particle spectra evolution in Z=14 and N=28 chains

We study the mechanisms which reduce the proton 1d(3/2)-1d(5/2) spin-orbit splitting and the neutron 1f(7/2) subshell closure in 42Si. We use various self-consistent mean field models: non-relativistic Skyrme-Hartree-Fock and relativistic density-dependent Hartree-Fock. Special attention is devoted to the influence of a tensor component in the effective interaction. It is found that the tensor force indeed governs the reduction of the 1d proton spin-orbit splitting. On the other hand, the reduction of the neutron 1f(7/2) subshell closure is not clearly related to the tensor force.

Continued fraction approximation for the nuclear matter response function

We use a continued fraction approximation to calculate the RPA response function of nuclear matter. The convergence of the approximation is assessed by comparing with the numerically exact response function obtained with a typical effective finite-range interaction used in nuclear physics. It is shown that just the first order term of the expansion can give reliable results at densities up to the saturation density value.

Low-lying dipole resonance in neutron-rich Ne isotopes

Microscopic structure of the low-lying isovector dipole excitation mode in neutron-rich $^{26,28,30}$Ne is investigated by performing deformed quasiparticle-random-phase-approximation (QRPA) calculations. The particle-hole residual interaction is derived from a Skyrme force through a Landau-Migdal approximation. We have obtained the low-lying resonance in $^{26}$Ne at around 8.5 MeV. It is found that the isovector dipole strength at $E_{x}<10$ MeV exhausts about 6.0% of the classical Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn dipole sum rule. This excitation mode is composed of several QRPA eigenmodes, one is generated by a $ν(2s^{-1}_{1/2} 2p_{3/2})$ transition dominantly, and the other mostly by a $ν(2s^{-1}_{1/2} 2p_{1/2})$ transition. The neutron excitations take place outside of the nuclear surface reflecting the spatially extended structure of the $2s_{1/2}$ wave function. In $^{30}$Ne, the deformation splitting of the giant resonance is large, and the low-lying resonance is overlapping with the giant resonance.

Effects of the particle-particle channel on properties of low-lying vibrational states

Making use of the finite rank separable approach for the quasiparticle random phase approximation enables one to perform nuclear structure calculations in very large two-quasiparticle spaces. The approach is extended to take into account the residual particle-particle interaction. The calculations are performed by using Skyrme interactions in the particle-hole channel and density-dependent zero-range interactions in the particle-particle channel. To illustrate our approach, we study the properties of the lowest quadrupole states in the even-even nuclei $^{128}$Pd, $^{130}$Cd, $^{124-134}$Sn, $^{128-136}$Te and $^{136}$Xe.

Shell Structure and $ρ$-Tensor Correlations in Density-Dependent Relativistic Hartree-Fock theory

A new effective interaction PKA1 with $ρ$-tensor couplings for the density-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock (DDRHF) theory is presented. It is obtained by fitting selected empirical ground state and shell structure properties. It provides satisfactory descriptions of nuclear matter and the ground state properties of finite nuclei at the same quantitative level as recent DDRHF and RMF models. Significant improvement on the single-particle spectra is also found due to the inclusion of $ρ$-tensor couplings. As a result, PKA1 cures a common disease of the existing DDRHF and RMF Lagrangians, namely the artificial shells at 58 and 92, and recovers the realistic sub-shell closure at 64. Moreover, the proper spin-orbit splittings and well-conserved pseudo-spin symmetry are obtained with the new effective interaction PKA1. Due to the extra binding introduced by the $ρ$-tensor correlations, the balance between the nuclear attractions and the repulsions is changed and this constitutes the physical reason for the improvement of the nuclear shell structure.

Pairing interactions and the vanishing pairing correlations in hot nuclei

Finite temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations are performed in Sn isotopes using Skyrme and zero-range, density-dependent pairing interactions. For both stable and very neutron-rich nuclei the critical temperature at which pairing correlations vanish is independent of the volume/surface nature of the pairing interaction. The value of the critical temperature follows approximatively the empirical rule T$_c$ $\simeq$ 0.5 $Δ_{T=0}$ for all the calculated isotopes, showing that the critical temperature could be deduced from the pairing gap at zero temperature. On the other hand, the pairing gap at temperatures just below T$_c$ is strongly sensitive to the volume/surface nature of the pairing interaction.

RPA Correlations and Nuclear Densities in Relativistic Mean Field Approach

The relativistic mean field approach (RMF) is well known for describing accurately binding energies and nucleon distributions in atomic nuclei throughout the nuclear chart. The random phase approximation (RPA) built on top of the RMF is also a good framework for the study of nuclear excitations. Here, we examine the consequences of long range correlations brought about by the RPA on the neutron and proton densities as given by the RMF approach.

Relativistic Hartree-Fock theory. Part I: density-dependent effective Lagrangians

Effective Lagrangians suitable for a relativistic Hartree-Fock description of nuclear systems are presented. They include the 4 effective mesons $σ, ω, ρ$ and $π$ with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings. The criteria for determining the model parameters are the reproduction of the binding energies in a number of selected nuclei, and the bulk properties of nuclear matter (saturation point, compression modulus, symmetry energy). An excellent description of nuclear binding energies and radii is achieved for a range of nuclei encompassing light and heavy systems. The predictions of the present approach compare favorably with those of existing relativistic mean field models, with the advantage of incorporating the effects of pion-nucleon coupling.

Evolution of Nuclear Shell Structure due to the Pion Exchange Potential

The evolution of nuclear shell structure is investigated for the first time within density-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock theory and the role of $π$-exchange potential is studied in detail. The energy differences between the neutron orbits $\Lrb{\nu1h_{9/2},ν1i_{13/2}}$ in the N=82 isotones and between the proton ones $\Lrb{\pi1g_{7/2},\pi1h_{11/2}}$ in the Z=50 isotopes are extracted as a function of neutron excess $N-Z$. A kink around $Z = 58$ for the N=82 isotones is found as an effect resulting from pion correlations. It is shown that the inclusion of $π$-coupling plays a central role to provide realistic isospin dependence of the energy differences. In particular, the tensor part of the $π$-coupling has an important effect on the characteristic isospin dependence observed in recent experiments.

Density-Dependent Relativistic Hartree-Fock Approach

A new relativistic Hartree-Fock approach with density-dependent $σ$, $ω$, $ρ$ and $π$ meson-nucleon couplings for finite nuclei and nuclear matter is presented. Good description for finite nuclei and nuclear matter is achieved with a number of adjustable parameters comparable to that of the relativistic mean field approach. With the Fock terms, the contribution of the $π$-meson is included and the description for the nucleon effective mass and its isospin and energy dependence is improved.

Effects of spin-orbit interaction on nuclear response and neutrino mean free path

The effects of the spin-orbit component of the particle-hole interaction on nuclear response functions and neutrino mean free path are examined. A complete treatment of the full Skyrme interaction in the case of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter is given. Numerical results for neutron matter are discussed. It is shown that the effects of the spin-orbit interaction remain small, even at momentum transfer larger than the Fermi momentum. The neutrino mean free paths are marginally affected.

Pseudo-spin symmetry in density-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock theory

The pseudo-spin symmetry (PSS) is investigated in the density-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock theory by taking {the} doubly magic nucleus $^{132}$Sn as a representative. It is found that the Fock terms bring significant contributions to the pseudo-spin orbital potentials (PSOP) and make it comparable to the pseudo-centrifugal barrier (PCB). However, these Fock terms in the PSOP are counteracted by other exchange terms due to the non-locality of the exchange potentials. The pseudo-spin orbital splitting indicates that the PSS is preserved well for the partner states $\lrb{ν3s_{1/2}, \nu2d_{3/2}}$ of $^{132}$Sn in the relativistic Hartree-Fock theory.

From Brueckner Approach to Skyrme-type Energy Density Functional

A Skyrme-like effective interaction is built up from the equation of state of nuclear matter. The latter is calculated in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation with two and three body forces. A complete Skyrme parametrization requires a fit of the neutron and proton effective masses and also the Landau parameters. The new parametrization is probed on the properties of a set of closed-shell and closed-subshell nuclei, including binding energies and charge radii.
