A Cognitive Architecture for Shared Autonomy in AUV Operations

Operators remain essential to Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) operation, yet often suffer from low situational awareness and high workload, both of which negatively affect safety. This paper presents a cognitive architecture consisting of an ontology and multiple Large Language Models (LLMs) to assist the operator at all stages of the mission. Each LLM is grounded with domain-specific information from the ontology and given a simple role to create a system that can support the operator at all stages of an operation. We are aiming to prove that using the two together will allow decisions to be grounded in the relevant domain knowledge, but also benefit from the reasoning capabilities of the LLM. Our framework determines if a mission is possible for a given Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV), performs mission planning, and executes a given mission in simulation. The operator can be involved in planning and execution, ensuring the resulting plan is valid and that the vehicle behaves safely during execution. We compare different LLMs, Llama3, GPT-OSS, and Qwen2.5, to determine which are best suited to the different roles within our framework. We find that GPT-OSS performs best for feasibility assessment, planning, and execution, while Qwen2.5 is best suited to identifying mission types from natural language input.

A Collaborative Reasoning Framework for Anomaly Diagnostics in Underwater Robotics

The safe deployment of autonomous systems in safety-critical settings requires a paradigm that combines human expertise with AI-driven analysis, especially when anomalies are unforeseen. We introduce AURA (Autonomous Resilience Agent), a collaborative framework for anomaly and fault diagnostics in robotics. AURA integrates large language models (LLMs), a high-fidelity digital twin (DT), and human-in-the-loop interaction to detect and respond to anomalous behavior in real time. The architecture uses two agents with clear roles: (i) a low-level State Anomaly Characterization Agent that monitors telemetry and converts signals into a structured natural-language problem description, and (ii) a high-level Diagnostic Reasoning Agent that conducts a knowledge-grounded dialogue with an operator to identify root causes, drawing on external sources. Human-validated diagnoses are then converted into new training examples that refine the low-level perceptual model. This feedback loop progressively distills expert knowledge into the AI, transforming it from a static tool into an adaptive partner. We describe the framework's operating principles and provide a concrete implementation, establishing a pattern for trustworthy, continually improving human-robot teams.

Digital Twins Below the Surface: Enhancing Underwater Teleoperation

Subsea exploration, inspection, and intervention operations heavily rely on remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). However, the inherent complexity of the underwater environment presents significant challenges to the operators of these vehicles. This paper delves into the challenges associated with navigation and maneuvering tasks in the teleoperation of ROVs, such as reduced situational awareness and heightened teleoperator workload. To address these challenges, we introduce an underwater Digital Twin (DT) system designed to enhance underwater teleoperation, enable autonomous navigation, support system monitoring, and facilitate system testing through simulation. Our approach involves a dynamic representation of the underwater robot and its environment using desktop virtual reality, as well as the integration of mapping, localization, path planning and simulation capabilities within the DT system. Our research demonstrates the system's adaptability, versatility and feasibility, highlighting significant challenges and, in turn, improving the teleoperators' situational awareness and reducing their workload.
