Nematic, vector-multipole, and plateau-liquid states in the classical O(3) pyrochlore antiferromagnet with biquadratic interactions in applied magnetic field

The classical bilinear-biquadratic nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice does not exhibit conventional Neel-type magnetic order at any temperature or magnetic field. Instead spin correlations decay algebraically over length scales r ~ \sqrt{T}, behavior characteristic of a Coulomb phase arising from a strong local constraint. Despite this, its thermodynamic properties remain largely unchanged if Neel order is restored by the addition of a degeneracy-lifting perturbation, e.g., further neighbor interactions. Here we show how these apparent contradictions can be resolved by a proper understanding of way in which long-range Neel order emerges out of well-formed local correlations, and identify nematic and vector-multipole orders hidden in the different Coulomb phases of the model. So far as experiment is concerned, our results suggest that where long range interactions are unimportant, the magnetic properties of Cr spinels which exhibit half-magnetization plateaux may be largely independent of the type of magnetic order present.

Phase diagram of the spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice

We presents the results of an extensive numerical study of the phase diagram of the spin-1/2, \protect{$J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$} Heisenberg model on a square lattice, for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_1$, using exact diagonalization with periodic and twisted boundary conditions. Comparison is made with published spin wave calculations. We show that quantum fluctuations play a very important role, changing both the extent and the wave vector of classical spiral phases, and leading to new quantum phases where the classical spiral states have a high degeneracy. These include a new phase with small or vanishing spin-stiffness, in addition to known valence-bond-solid and bond-nematic phases.

Doped Singlet-Pair Crystal in the Hubbard model on the checkerboard lattice

In the limit of large nearest--neighbor and on--site Coulomb repulsions, the Hubbard model on the planar pyrochlore lattice maps, near quarter-filling, onto a doped quantum fully packed loop model. The phase diagram exhibits at quarter filling a novel quantum state of matter, the Resonating Singlet-Pair Crystal, an insulating phase breaking lattice symmetry. Properties of a few doped holes are investigated. In contrast to the doped quantum antiferromagnet, phase separation is restricted to very small hopping leaving an extended``window'' for superconducting pairing. However the later is more fragile for large hopping than in the case of the antiferromagnet.

Octupolar order in the multiple spin exchange model on a triangular lattice

We show how a gapless spin liquid with hidden octupolar order arises in an applied magnetic field, in a model applicable to thin films of 3He with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic (cyclic) exchange interactions. Evidence is also presented for nematic -- i.e., quadrupolar -- correlations bordering on ferromagnetism in the absence of a magnetic field.

Symmetry considerations on the magnetization process of the Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore lattice

We present a detailed symmetry analysis of the degeneracy lifting due to higher order spin exchanges in the pyrochlore lattice in applied magnetic field. Under the assumption of the 4 sublattice ordering, the criteria for a stable half-magnetization plateau are deduced. The higher order exchange terms may originate from spin-lattice coupling, or can describe quantum and thermal fluctuations.

Half-magnetization plateaux in Cr spinels

Magnetization plateaux, visible as anomalies in magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures, are one of the hallmarks of frustrated magnetism. An extremely robust half-magnetization plateau is observed in the spinel oxides CdCr2O4 and HgCr2O4, where it is accompanied by a substantial lattice distortion. We give an overview of the present state experiment for CdCr2O4 and HgCr2O4, and show how such a half-magnetization plateau arises quite naturally in a simple model of these systems, once coupling to the lattice is taken into account.

Two-dimensional frustrated spin systems in high magnetic fields

We discuss our numerical results on the properties of the S = 1/2 frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice as a function of temperature and frustration angle phi = atan(J2/J1) in an applied magnetic field. We cover the full phase diagram of the model in the range -pi <= phi <= pi. The discussion includes the parameter dependence of the saturation field itself, and addresses the instabilities associated with it. We also discuss the magnetocaloric effect of the model and show how it can be used to uniquely determine the effective interaction constants of the compounds which were investigated experimentally.

Interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in epitaxial Nb(110)/Au(111)/Fe(110) trilayers

In order to clarify the influence of ferromagnetism on superconductivity through a normal metal layer, the superconducting properties of epitaxial Nb(110)/Au(111)/Fe(110) trilayers were studied as a function of the thickness tAu of the intervening Au layer. Structural characterization of the samples revealed sharp interfaces, almost free from roughness. A strong suppression of the superconducting transition temperature Tc was observed for tAu<10 A, implying a strong spin-polarization of the Au layer in the vicinity of the Au/Fe interface. A periodic change of Tc with a period of ~21 A (~9 atomic monolayer of Au) was observed for 20 A<tAu<104 A. Neither the Fermi surface nesting of the normal metal layer, nor Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov oscillations induced by a superconducting proximity effect in the ferromagnet can by themselves account for the observed period. These results suggest that a new and more subtle form of quantum interference occurs in very clean trilayer systems.

Nematic order in square lattice frustrated ferromagnets

We present a new scenario for the breakdown of ferromagnetic order in a two-dimensional quantum magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. In this, dynamical effects lead to the formation of two-magnon bound states, which undergo Bose-Einstein condensation, giving rise to bond-centered nematic order. This scenario is explored in some detail for an extended Heisenberg model on a square lattice. In particular, we present numerical evidence confirming the existence of a state with d-wave nematic correlations but no long range magnetic order, lying between the saturated ferromagnetic and collinear antiferromagnetic phases of the ferromagnetic J1-J2 model. We argue by continuity of spectra that this phase is also present in a model with 4-spin cyclic exchange.

A metamagnetic critical point in a three dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet

The competition between different forms of order is central to the problem of strong correlation. This is particularly true of frustrated systems, which frequently exist at or near to a zero-temperature critical point. Here we show that a state with a half-magnetization plateau but no long range order can arise when a three dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet is tuned to a critical point bordering a metamagnetic state. We use classical Monte Carlo simulation and low-temperature expansion techniques to accurately characterize this `spin pseudogap' state, and show how its properties relate to those of the critical point. Our results provide an example of three dimensional spin model which can be used to study the relationship between gap and `pseudogap', - i.e. long range and preformed local order - near a metamagnetic critical point.

Interplay among Spin, Orbital and Lattice Degrees of Freedom in $t_{2g}$ Electron Systems with Edge-Sharing Network of Octahedra

Transition metal oxides whose lattice structure has edge-sharing network of octahedra constitute a diverse group of intriguing materials besides compounds with corner-sharing octahedra such as perovskites. We present a theoretical investigation of the interplay among spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom in these materials. We focus on $t_{2g}$ electron systems where a keen competition among those degrees of freedom is expected to emerge under a relatively weak Jahn-Teller coupling. We study the interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom in vanadium spinels and titanium pyroxenes. We clarify the important role of the strong anisotropy in the orbital interactions due to the edge-sharing geometry. We also discuss the interplay between spin and lattice in chromium spinels focusing on the magnetization process under the external magnetic field.

Monte Carlo study of half-magnetization plateau and magnetic phase diagram in pyrochlore antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model

The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a pyrochlore lattice under external magnetic field is studied by classical Monte Carlo simulation. The model includes bilinear and biquadratic interactions; the latter effectively describes the coupling to lattice distortions. The magnetization process shows a half-magnetization plateau at low temperatures, accompanied with strong suppression of the magnetic susceptibility. Temperature dependence of the plateau behavior is clarified. Finite-temperature phase diagram under the magnetic field is determined. The results are compared with recent experimental results in chromium spinel oxides.

Quantum and thermal effects in the double exchange ferromagnet

The physics of the ferromagnetic phase of the ``double exchange'' model has been widely discussed in the context of the CMR manganites. Usually, the double exchange ferromagnet is treated is classically, by mapping it onto an effective Heisenberg model. However this mapping does not permit a correct treatment of quantum or thermal fluctuation effects, and the results obtained lack many of the interesting features seen in experiments on the manganites. Here we outline a new analytic approach to systematically evaluating quantum and thermal corrections to the magnetic and electronic properties of the double exchange ferromagnet.

Finite temperature properties and frustrated ferromagnetism in a square lattice Heisenberg model

The spin 1/2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with antiferromagnetic nearest- and next-nearest neighbour interactions (the $J_1$--$J_2$ model) has long been studied as a paradigm of a two-dimensional frustrated quantum magnet. Only very recently, however, have the first experimental realisations of such systems been synthesized. The newest material, Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ seems to have mixed ferro-- and antiferromagnetic exchange couplings. In the light of this, we extend the semiclassical treatment of the $J_1$--$J_2$ model to include ferromagnetic interactions, and present an analysis of the finite temperature properties of the model based on the exact diagonalization of 8, 16 and 20 site clusters. We propose that diffuse neutron scattering can be used to resolve the ambiguity inherent in determining the ratio and sign of $J_1$ and $J_2$ from thermodynamic properties alone, and use a finite temperature Lanczos algorithm to make predictions for the relevant high temperature spin-spin correlation functions. The possibility of a spin-liquid phase occurring for ferromagnetic $J_1$ is also briefly discussed.

Cyclic exchange, isolated states and spinon deconfinement in an XXZ Heisenberg model on the checkerboard lattice

The antiferromagnetic Ising model on a checkerboard lattice has an ice-like ground state manifold with extensive degeneracy. and, to leading order in J_xy, deconfined spinon excitations. We explore the role of cyclic exchange arising at order J^2_xy/J_z on the ice states and their associated spinon excitations. By mapping the original problem onto an equivalent quantum six--vertex model, we identify three different phases as a function of the chemical potential for flippable plaquettes - a phase with long range Neel order and confined spinon excitations, a non-magnetic state of resonating square plaquettes, and a quasi-collinear phase with gapped but deconfined spinon excitations. The relevance of the results to the square--lattice quantum dimer model is also discussed.

Intrinsic Inhomogeneities in Manganite Thin Films Investigated with Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy

Thin films of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 on MgO show a metal insulator transition and colossal magnetoresistance. The shape of this transition can be explained by intrinsic spatial inhomogeneities, which give rise to a domain structure of conducting and insulating domains at the submicrometer scale. These domains then undergo a percolation transition. The tunneling conductance and tunneling gap measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy were used to distinguish and visualize these domains.

Fractional charges in pyrochlore lattices

A pyrochlore lattice is considered where the average electron number of electrons per site is half--integer, concentrating on the case of exactly half an electron per site. Strong on-site repulsions are assumed, so that all sites are either empty or singly occupied. Where there are in addition strong nearest--neighbour repulsions, a tetrahedron rule comes into effect, as previously suggested for magnetite. We show that in this case, there exist excitations with fractional charge (+/-) e/2. These are intimately connected with the high degeneracy of the ground state in the absence of kinetic energy terms. When an additional electron is inserted into the system, it decays into two point like excitations with charge -e/2, connected by a Heisenberg spin chain which carries the electron's spin.
