Increased Compute Efficiency and the Diffusion of AI Capabilities

Training advanced AI models requires large investments in computational resources, or compute. Yet, as hardware innovation reduces the price of compute and algorithmic advances make its use more efficient, the cost of training an AI model to a given performance falls over time - a concept we describe as increasing compute efficiency. We find that while an access effect increases the number of actors who can train models to a given performance over time, a performance effect simultaneously increases the performance available to each actor. This potentially enables large compute investors to pioneer new capabilities, maintaining a performance advantage even as capabilities diffuse. Since large compute investors tend to develop new capabilities first, it will be particularly important that they share information about their AI models, evaluate them for emerging risks, and, more generally, make responsible development and release decisions. Further, as compute efficiency increases, governments will need to prepare for a world where dangerous AI capabilities are widely available - for instance, by developing defenses against harmful AI models or by actively intervening in the diffusion of particularly dangerous capabilities.

Simple Difference-in-Differences Estimation in Fixed-T Panels

The present paper proposes a new treatment effects estimator that is valid when the number of time periods is small, and the parallel trends condition holds conditional on covariates and unobserved heterogeneity in the form of interactive fixed effects. The estimator also allow the control variables to be affected by treatment and it enables estimation of the resulting indirect effect on the outcome variable. The asymptotic properties of the estimator are established and their accuracy in small samples is investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. The empirical usefulness of the estimator is illustrated using as an example the effect of increased trade competition on firm markups in China.

Typography-MNIST (TMNIST): an MNIST-Style Image Dataset to Categorize Glyphs and Font-Styles

We present Typography-MNIST (TMNIST), a dataset comprising of 565,292 MNIST-style grayscale images representing 1,812 unique glyphs in varied styles of 1,355 Google-fonts. The glyph-list contains common characters from over 150 of the modern and historical language scripts with symbol sets, and each font-style represents varying subsets of the total unique glyphs. The dataset has been developed as part of the CognitiveType project which aims to develop eye-tracking tools for real-time mapping of type to cognition and to create computational tools that allow for the easy design of typefaces with cognitive properties such as readability. The dataset and scripts to generate MNIST-style images for glyphs in different font styles are freely available at https://github.com/aiskunks/CognitiveType.
