Boundary electromagnetic duality from homological edge modes

Recent years have seen a renewed interest in using `edge modes' to extend the pre-symplectic structure of gauge theory on manifolds with boundaries. Here we further the investigation undertaken in \cite{FP2018} by using the formalism of homotopy pullback and Deligne-Beilinson cohomology to describe an electromagnetic (EM) duality on the boundary of $M=B^{3}\times\mathbb{R}$. Upon breaking a generalized global symmetry, the duality is implemented by a BF-like topological boundary term. We then introduce Wilson line singularities on $\partial M$ and show that these induce the existence of dual edge modes, which we identify as connections over a $\left(-1\right)$-gerbe. We derive the pre-symplectic structure that yields the central charge in \cite{FP2018} and show that the central charge is related to a non-trivial class of the $\left(-1\right)$-gerbe.

Homological perspective on edge modes in linear Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons theory

We provide an elegant homological construction of the extended phase space for linear Yang-Mills theory on an oriented and time-oriented Lorentzian manifold $M$ with a time-like boundary $\partial M$ that was proposed by Donnelly and Freidel [JHEP 1609, 102 (2016)]. This explains and formalizes many of the rather ad hoc constructions for edge modes appearing in the theoretical physics literature. Our construction also applies to linear Chern-Simons theory, in which case we obtain the extended phase space introduced by Geiller [Nucl. Phys. B 924, 312 (2017)].

Why surplus structure is not superfluous

The idea that gauge theory has 'surplus' structure poses a puzzle: in one much discussed sense, this structure is redundant; but on the other hand, it is also widely held to play an essential role in the theory. In this paper, we employ category-theoretic tools to illuminate an aspect of this puzzle. We precisify what is meant by 'surplus' structure by means of functorial comparisons with equivalence classes of gauge fields, and then show that such structure is essential for any theory that represents a rich collection of physically relevant fields which are 'local' in nature.

Kähler Representation Theory

We show that Jordan-Lie-Banach algebras, which provide an abstract characterization of quantum theory equivalent to C^* algebras, can always be canonically represented in terms of smooth functions on a Kähler manifold.

Categorical Generalization and Physical Structuralism

Category theory has become central to certain aspects of theoretical physics. Bain [Synthese, 190:1621--1635 (2013)] has recently argued that this has significance for ontic structural realism. We argue against this claim. In so doing, we uncover two pervasive forms of category-theoretic generalization. We call these `generalization by duality' and `generalization by categorifying physical processes'. We describe in detail how these arise, and explain their significance using detailed examples. We show that their significance is two-fold: the articulation of high-level physical concepts, and the generation of new models.
