Controllable Strain-driven Topological Phase Transition and Dominant Surface State Transport in High-Quality HfTe5 Samples

Controlling materials to create and tune topological phases of matter could potentially be used to explore new phases of topological quantum matter and to create novel devices where the carriers are topologically protected. It has been demonstrated that a trivial insulator can be converted into a topological state by modulating the spin-orbit interaction or the crystal lattice. However, there are limited methods to controllably and efficiently tune the crystal lattice and at the same time perform electronic measurements at cryogenic temperatures. Here, we use large controllable strain to demonstrate the topological phase transition from a weak topological insulator phase to a strong topological insulator phase in high-quality HfTe5 samples. After applying high strain to HfTe5 and converting it into a strong topological insulator, we found that the sample's resistivity increased by more than two orders of magnitude (24,000%) and that the electronic transport is dominated by the topological surface states at cryogenic temperatures. Our findings show that HfTe5 is an ideal material for engineering topological properties, and it could be generalized to study topological phase transitions in van der Waals materials and heterostructures. These results can pave the way to create novel devices with applications ranging from spintronics to fault-tolerant topologically protected quantum computers.

One-dimensionality signature in optical conductivity of heavy-fermion CeIr$_{3}$B$_{2}$

In low dimensions, the combined effects of interactions and quantum fluctuations can lead to dramatically new physics distinct from that existing in higher dimensions. Here, we investigate the electronic and optical properties of CeIr$_{3}$B$_{2}$, a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Kondo lattice system, using $ab\ initio$ calculations. The Ce atoms in the hexagonal crystal structure form 1D chains along the $c$-axis, with extremely short Ce-Ce distances. The quasi-1D nature of the crystal structure is well reflected in its electronic structure. Extremely flat bands emerge within the $ab$-plane of the Brillouin zone, yielding sharp optical transitions in the corresponding optical conductivity. Our calculations indicate that these prominent peaks in the optical conductivity provide a clear signature of quasi-1D heavy fermion systems.

Ultrafast x-ray scattering reveals composite amplitude collective mode in the Weyl charge density wave material (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I

We report ultrafast x-ray scattering experiments of the quasi-1D charge density wave (CDW) material (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I following photoexcitation with femtosecond infrared laser pulses. From the time-dependent diffraction signal at the CDW sidebands we identify an amplitude mode derived primarily from the transverse acoustic component of the CDW static distortion. The dynamics of this acoustic amplitude mode are described well by a model of a displacive excitation, which we interpret as mediated through a coupling to the optical phonon component associated with the tetramerization of the Ta chains.
