Non-perturbative time-dependent String Backgrounds and Axion-induced Optical Activity

Conformal invariance for bosonic strings in time-dependent backgrounds of graviton, dilaton and Kalb-Ramond field is obtained by imposing Weyl-beta functions to be homogeneous in time, to all orders in $α^{'}$. This construction is possible in any target space dimension, as a result of the non-trivial background configurations. The electromagnetic effects of the antisymmetric tensor field, when coupled to an Abelian (electromagnetic) gauge field, are discussed in the framework of a four-dimensional Minkowski Universe, for concreteness. Non-trivial optical activity is demonstrated, which constitutes a way of detecting string-inspired axion/dilaton effects in such models.

Quantum-Gravity Decoherence Effects in Neutrino Oscillations: Expected Constraints from CNGS and J-PARC

Quantum decoherence, the evolution of pure states into mixed states, may be a feature of quantum-gravity models. In most cases, such models lead to fewer neutrinos of all active flavours being detected in a long baseline experiment as compared to three-flavour standard neutrino oscillations. We discuss the potential of the CNGS and J-PARC beams in constraining models of quantum-gravity induced decoherence using neutrino oscillations as a probe. We use as much as possible model-independent parameterizations, even though they are motivated by specific microscopic models, for fits to the expected experimental data which yield bounds on quantum-gravity decoherence parameters.

Towards a microscopic construction of flavour vacua from a space-time foam model

The effect on flavour oscillations of simple expanding background space-times, motivated by some D-particle foam models, is calculated for a toy-model of bosons with flavour degrees of freedom. The presence of D-particle defects in the space-time, which can interact non trivially (via particle capture) with flavoured particles in a flavour non-preserving way, generates mixing in the effective field theory of low-energy string excitations. Moreover, the recoil of the D-particle defect during the capture/scattering process implies Lorentz violation, which however may be averaged to zero in isotropic D-particle populations, but implies non-trivial effects in correlators. Both features imply that the flavoured mixed state sees a non-trivial flavour (Fock-space) vacuum of a type introduced earlier by Blasone and Vitiello in a generic context of theories with mixing. We discuss the orthogonality of the flavour vacua to the usual Fock vacua and the effect on flavour oscillations in these backgrounds. Furthermore we analyse the equation of state of the Flavour vacuum, and find that, for slow expansion rates induced by D particle recoil, it is equivalent to that of a cosmological constant. Some estimates of these novel non-perturbative contribution to the vacuum energy are made. The contribution vanishes if the mass difference and the mixing angle of the flavoured states vanish.

Antisymmetric-Tensor and Electromagnetic effects in an alpha'-non-perturbative Four-Dimensional String Cosmology

Starting from an exact (in the Regge slope alpha') functional method for a bosonic stringy sigma-model, we investigate four-dimensional cosmological string solutions in graviton, dilaton and antisymmetric tensor backgrounds, compatible with world-sheet conformal invariance, and valid beyond perturbative expansions in powers of alpha'. The antisymmetric tensor field, playing the role of an axion in the four-dimensional target space time, leads to spatial anisotropies of the emergent Robertson-Walker expanding Universe, and, upon coupling the system to the electromagnetic field, it results in non-trivial optical activity. Some estimates of the corresponding effects are made and their relevance to current cosmology is briefly discussed.

Worldsheet Instantons and a Null String Limit of Born-Infeld Theory

For a superstring theory in four spacetime dimensions, we propose a modification of the Born-Infeld action that possesses a well-defined tensionless limit. We interpret this as describing the effective target space dynamics of null strings on a D3-brane. We argue that such a modification can be induced by nonperturbative contributions from instantons in the worldsheet sigma-model describing string propagation on the brane.

String cosmology from a novel renormalization perspective

We study small perturbations around the exactly marginal time-dependent string configuration of [1], and demonstrate the lack of the appropriate linearization. This implies that this configuration is an isolated fixed point of the $α^{'}$ flow in the pertinent space of theories.

An Alternative to Exact Renormalization and Cosmological Solutions in String Theory

In this work we review the application of a functional method, serving as an alternative to the Wilsonian Exact Renormalization approach, to stringy bosonic $σ$-models with metric and dilaton backgrounds on a spherical world sheet [1]. We derive an exact evolution equation for the dilaton with the amplitude of quantum fluctuations, driven by the kinetic term of the two-dimensional world-sheet theory. The linear dilaton conformal field theory, corresponding to a linearly (in cosmic Einstein-frame time) expanding Universe, appears as a trivial fixed point of this equation. With the help of conformal-invariance conditions, we find a logarithmic dilaton as another, exact and non trivial, fixed-point solution. Cosmological implications of our solutions are briefly discussed, in particular the transition (exit) from the expanding Universe of the linear dilaton to the Minkowski vacuum, corresponding to the non-trivial fixed point of our generalised flow. This novel renormalization-group method may therefore offer new insights into exact properties of string theories of physical significance.

CPT and Quantum Mechanics Tests with Kaons

In this review we first discuss the theoretical motivations for possible CPT violation and deviations from ordinary quantum-mechanical behavior of field-theoretic systems in the context of an extended class of quantum-gravity models. Then we proceed to a description of precision tests of CPT symmetry using mainly neutral kaons. We emphasize the possibly unique role of neutral meson factories in providing specific tests of models where the quantum-mechanical CPT operator is not well-defined, leading to modifications of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen particle correlators. Finally, we present tests of CPT, T, and CP using charged kaons, and in particular K_l4 decays, which are interesting due to the high statistics attainable in experiments.

CPT and Quantum Mechanics Tests with Kaons: Theory

In this talk I review theoretical motivations for possible CPT Violation and deviations from ordinary quantum mechanical behavior of field theoretic systems in some quantum gravity models, and I describe the relevant precision tests using neutral and charged Kaons. I emphasize the possibly unique role of neutral-meson factories in providing specific tests of models in which the CPT operator is not well-defined, leading to modifications of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) particle correlators.

The issue of Dark Energy in String Theory

Recent astrophysical observations, pertaining to either high-redshift supernovae or cosmic microwave background temperature fluctuations, as those measured recently by the WMAP satellite, provide us with data of unprecedented accuracy, pointing towards two (related) facts: (i) our Universe is accelerated at present, and (ii) more than 70 % of its energy content consists of an unknown substance, termed dark energy, which is believed responsible for its current acceleration. Both of these facts are a challenge to String theory. In this review I outline briefly the challenges, the problems and possible avenues for research towards a resolution of the Dark Energy issue in string theory.

A novel non-perturbative approach to String Cosmology

We develop an exact functional method applied to the bosonic string on a shperical world sheet, in graviton and dilaton backgrounds, consistent with conformal invariance. In this method, quantum fluctuations are controled by the amplitude of the kinetic term of the corresponding stringy sigma-model, and we exhibit a novel non-perturbative non-critical string configuration which appears as a fixed point of our evolution equation. We argue that this string configuration is an exact solution, valid to all orders in alpha', which is consistent with string scattering amplitudes. The dilaton configuration is logarithmic in terms of the string coordinate X^0, and the amplitude of the corresponding quantum fluctuations is independent of the target space dimension D; for D=4, the corresponding Universe, in the Einstein frame, is static and flat. A linearization around this fixed point leads to a slowly expanding, decelerating Universe, reaching asymptotically (in Einstein time) the Minkowski Universe. Moreover, the well-known linear (in terms of X^0) dilaton background, which is a trivial fixed point of our evolution equation, is recovered by our non trivial fixed point for early times. This feature explains the time evolution from a linearly expanding Universe to a Minkowski Universe.

Decoherence induced CPT violation and entangled neutral mesons

We discuss two classes of semi-microscopic theoretical models of stochastic space-time foam in quantum gravity and the associated effects on entangled states of neutral mesons, signalling an intrinsic breakdown of CPT invariance. One class of models deals with a specific model of foam, initially constructed in the context of non-critical (Liouville) string theory, but viewed here in the more general context of effective quantum-gravity models. The relevant Hamiltonian perturbation, describing the interaction of the meson with the foam medium, consists of off-diagonal stochastic metric fluctuations, connecting distinct mass eigenstates (or the appropriate generalisation thereof in the case of K-mesons), and it is proportional to the relevant momentum transfer (along the direction of motion of the meson pair). There are two kinds of CPT-violating effects in this case, which can be experimentally disentangled: one (termed ``omega-effect'') is associated with the failure of the indistinguishability between the neutral meson and its antiparticle, and affects certain symmetry properties of the initial state of the two-meson system; the second effect is generated by the time evolution of the system in the medium of the space-time foam, and can result in time-dependent contributions of the $omega-effect type in the time profile of the two meson state. Estimates of both effects are given, which show that, at least in certain models, such effects are not far from the sensitivity of experimental facilities available currently or in the near future. The other class of quantum gravity models involves a medium of gravitational fluctuations which behaves like a ``thermal bath''. In this model both of the above-mentioned intrinsic CPT violation effects are not valid.

A Possible Quantum-Gravitational Origin of the Neutrino Mass Difference ?

We discuss the theoretical possibility that the neutrino mass differences have part of their origin in the quantum-decoherence-inducing medium of space-time foam, which characterises some models of quantum gravity, in much the same way as the celebrated MSW effect, responsible for the contribution to mass differences when neutrinos pass through ordinary material media. We briefly describe consequences of such decoherent media in inducing CPT violation at a fundamental level, which would affect the neutrino oscillation probability; we speculate on the connection of such phenomena with the role of neutrinos for providing one possible source of a cosmological constant in the Universe, of the phenomenologically right order of magnitude. Finally we discuss possible experimental constraints on the amount of neutrino mass differences induced by quantum gravity, which are based on fits of a simple decoherence model with all the currently available neutrino data.

Induced Curvature in Brane Worlds by Surface Terms in String Effective Actions with Higher-Curvature Corrections

In string-inspired effective actions, representing the low-energy bulk dynamics of brane/string theories, the higher-curvature ghost-free Gauss-Bonnet combination is obtained by local field redefinitions which leave the (perturbative) string amplitudes invariant. We show that such redefinitions lead to surface terms which induce curvature on the brane world boundary of the bulk spacetime.

Robust Limits on Lorentz Violation from Gamma-Ray Bursts

We constrain the possibility of a non-trivial refractive index in free space corresponding to an energy-dependent velocity of light: c(E) \simeq c_0 (1 - E/M), where M is a mass scale that might represent effect of quantum-gravitational space-time foam, using the arrival times of sharp features observed in the intensities of radiation with different energies from a large sample of gamma-ray bursters (GRBs) with known redshifts. We use wavelet techniques to identify genuine features, which we confirm in simulations with artificial added noise. Using the weighted averages of the time-lags calculated using correlated features in all the GRB light curves, we find a systematic tendency for more energetic photons to arrive earlier. However, there is a very strong correlation between the parameters characterizing an intrinsic time-lag at the source and a distance-dependent propagation effect. Moreover, the significance of the earlier arrival times is less evident for a subsample of more robust spectral structures. Allowing for intrinsic stochastic time-lags in these features, we establish a statistically robust lower limit: M > 0.9x10^{16} GeV on the scale of violation of Lorentz invariance.

CPT Violation: What and where to look for

In this review I classify the possible ways of CPT violation, and I describe briefly their phenomenology, in both terrestrial and astrophysical experiments, including antimatter factories, neutral mesons and neutrinos, and discuss the various sensitivities. I also pay attention to disentangling genuine quantum-gravity induced CPT violation from `fake' violation due to ordinary matter effects. A particularly interesting situation arises when the breaking of CPT invariance is through unitarity violations, in the sense of the matter theory being viewed as an effective field theory, entangled with decoherening quantum gravity ``environments''. In such a case the quantum mechanical CPT operator is ill defined due to another mathematical theorem, and one has novel effects associated with CPT Violating modifications of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type correlations of entangled meson states in B and phi meson factories.

CPT Violation: Theory and Phenomenology

Invariance under the combined transformations of CPT (in any order) is guaranteed in Quantum Field Theory in flat space times due to a basic theorem (CPT Theorem). The currently used formalism of particle physics phenomenology is based on this theorem. However, there may be violations of the basic underlying assumptions of this theorem in models of quantum gravity, namely Lorentz covariance, unitarity and/or locality of interactions. This may lead to observable (in principle) effects of CPT violation. Since there is no single figure of merit for this potential violation, the respective phenomenology is rather complex. In this review I classify the possible ways of CPT violation, and I describe briefly their phenomenology, in both terrestrial and astrophysical experiments, including antimatter factories, neutral mesons and neutrinos, and discuss the various sensitivities.

Logarithmic Conformal Field Theories and Strings in Changing Backgrounds

I review a particular class of physical applications of Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory in strings propagating in changing (not necessarily conformal) backgrounds, namely D-brane recoil in flat or time-dependent cosmological backgrounds. The role of recoil logarithmic vertex operators as non-conformal deformations, requiring in some cases Liouville dressing, is pointed out. It is also argued that, although in the case of non-supersymmetric recoil deformations the representation of target time as a Liouville zero mode may lead to non-linear quantum mechanics for stringy defects, such non-linearities disappear (or, at least, are strongly suppressed) after world-sheet supersymmetrization. A possible link is therefore suggested between (world-sheet) supersymmetry and linearity of quantum mechanics in this framework.
