The backreaction of anti-D3 branes on the Klebanov-Strassler geometry

We present the full numerical solution for the 15-dimensional space of linearized deformations of the Klebanov-Strassler background which preserve the SU(2) X SU(2) X Z_2 symmetries. We identify within this space the solution corresponding to anti-D3 branes, (modulo the presence of a certain subleading singularity in the infrared). All the 15 integration constants of this solution are fixed in terms of the number of anti-D3 branes, and the solution differs in the UV from the supersymmetric solution into which it is supposed to decay by a mode corresponding to a rescaling of the field theory coordinates. Deciding whether two solutions that differ in the UV by a rescaling mode are dual to the same theory is involved even for supersymmetric Klebanov-Strassler solutions, and we explain in detail some of the subtleties associated to this.

Supersymmetric Consistent Truncations of IIB on T(1,1)

We study consistent Kaluza-Klein reductions of type IIB supergravity on T(1,1) down to five-dimensions. We find that the most general reduction containing singlets under the global SU(2)xSU(2) symmetry of T(1,1) is N=4 gauged supergravity coupled to three vector multiplets with a particular gauging due to topological and geometric flux. Key to this reduction is several modes which have not been considered before in the literature and our construction allows us to easily show that the Papadopoulos - Tseytlin ansatz for IIB solutions on T(1,1) is a consistent truncation. This explicit reduction provides an organizing principle for the linearized spectrum around the warped deformed conifold as well as the baryonic branch and should have applications to the physics of flux compactifications with warped throats.

On Metastable Vacua and the Warped Deformed Conifold: Analytic Results

Continuing the programme of constructing the backreacted solution corresponding to smeared anti-D3 branes in the warped deformed conifold, we solve analytically the equations governing the space of first-order deformations around this solution. We express the results in terms of at most three nested integrals. These are the simplest expressions for the space of $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times \ZZ_2$-invariant deformations, in which the putative solution for smeared anti-D3 branes must live. We also explain why one cannot claim to identify this solution without fully relating the coefficients of the infrared and ultraviolet expansions of the deformation modes. The analytic solution we find is the first step in this direction.

On The Inflaton Potential From Antibranes in Warped Throats

We compute the force between a stack of smeared antibranes at the bottom of a warped throat and a stack of smeared branes at some distance up the throat, both for anti-D3 branes and for anti-M2 branes. We perform this calculation in two ways: first, by treating the antibranes as probes in the background sourced by the branes and second, by treating the branes as probes in the candidate background sourced by the antibranes. These two very different calculations yield exactly the same expression for the force, for all values of the brane-antibrane separation. This indicates that the force between a brane and an antibrane is not screened in backgrounds where there is positive charge dissolved in flux, and gives a way to precisely compute the inflaton potential in certain string cosmology scenarios.

The Backreaction of Anti-M2 Branes on a Warped Stenzel Space

We find the superpotential governing the supersymmetric warped M-theory solution with a transverse Stenzel space found by Cvetic, Gibbons, Lu and Pope in hep-th/0012011, and use this superpotential to extract and solve the twelve coupled equations underlying the first-order backreacted solution of a stack of anti-M2 branes in this space. These anti-M2 branes were analyzed recently in a probe approximation by Klebanov and Pufu, who conjectured that they should be dual to a metastable vacuum of a supersymmetric 2+1 dimensional theory. We find that the would-be supergravity dual to such a metastable vacuum must have an infrared singularity and discuss whether this singularity is acceptable or not. Given that a similar singularity appears when placing anti-D3 branes in the Klebanov-Strassler solution, our work strengthens the possibility that anti-branes in warped throats do not give rise to metastable vacua.

Supergravity Instabilities of Non-Supersymmetric Quantum Critical Points

Motivated by the recent use of certain consistent truncations of M-theory to study condensed matter physics using holographic techniques, we study the SU(3)-invariant sector of four-dimensional, N=8 gauged supergravity and compute the complete scalar spectrum at each of the five non-trivial critical points. We demonstrate that the smaller SU(4)^- sector is equivalent to a consistent truncation studied recently by various authors and find that the critical point in this sector, which has been proposed as the ground state of a holographic superconductor, is unstable due to a family of scalars that violate the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. We also derive the origin of this instability in eleven dimensions and comment on the generalization to other embeddings of this critical point which involve arbitrary Sasaki-Einstein seven manifolds. In the spirit of a resurging interest in consistent truncations, we present a formal treatment of the SU(3)-invariant sector as a U(1)xU(1) gauged N=2 supergravity theory coupled to one hypermultiplet.

On the Existence of Meta-stable Vacua in Klebanov-Strassler

We solve for the complete space of linearized deformations of the Klebanov-Strassler background consistent with the symmetries preserved by a stack of anti-D3 branes smeared on the $S^3$ of the deformed conifold. We find that the only solution whose UV physics is consistent with that of a perturbation produced by anti-D3 branes must have a singularity in the infrared, coming from NS and RR three-form field strengths whose energy density diverges. If this singularity is admissible, our solution describes the backreaction of the anti-D3 branes, and is thus likely to be dual to the conjectured metastable vacuum in the Klebanov-Strassler field theory. If this singularity is not admissible, then our analysis strongly suggests that anti-D3 branes do not give rise to metastable Klebanov-Strassler vacua, which would have dramatic consequences for some string theory constructions of de Sitter space. Key to this result is a simple, universal form for the force on a probe D3-brane in our ansatz.

Missing Mirrors: Type IIA Supergravity on the Resolved Conifold

We consider massive IIA supergravity on the resolved conifold with $SU(2)_L^2\times U(1)_R$ symmetry and $\N=1$ supersymmetry. A one dimensional family of such regular solutions was found by Brandhuber and we propose this to be the mirror to one dimension of the moduli space of IIB solutions on the deformed conifold found by Butti et al. This family provides a description of the geometric transition in terms of a smooth family of flux backgrounds. The remaining dimension of the moduli space of Butti et al contains the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler and we propose that the mirror of this is either some stringy resolution of a family of singular solutions found here or must be entirely non-geometric.

Non-geometric Backgrounds and the First Order String Sigma Model

We study the first order form of the NS string sigma model allowing for worldsheet couplings corresponding on the target space to a bi-vector, a two-form and an inverse metric. Lifting the topological sector of this action to three dimensions produces several Wess-Zumino like terms which encode the bi-vector generalization of the Courant bracket. This bracket may be familiar to physicists through the (H_{ijk},F_{ij}^{k},Q_i^{jk},R^{ijk}) notation for non-geometric backgrounds introduced by Shelton-Taylor-Wecht. The non-geometricity of the string theory in encoded in the global properties of the bi-vector, when the bi-vector is a section then the string theory is geometric. Another interesting situation emerges when one considers membrane actions which are not equivalent to string theories on the boundary of the membrane. Such a situation arises when one attempts to describe the so-called R-space (the third T-dual of a T^3 with H_3 flux). This model appears to be, at least classically, described by a membrane sigma model, not a string theory. Examples of geometric backgrounds with bi-vector couplings and non-vanishing Q-coefficients are provided by gauged WZW models.

Holographic, N=1 Supersymmetric RG Flows on M2 Branes

We find a family of holographic N=1 supersymmetric RG flows on M2 branes. These flows are driven by two mass parameters from the maximally (N=8) supersymmetric theory and the infra-red theory is controlled by two fixed points, one with G_2 symmetry and the other with SU(3)xU(1) symmetry and N=2 supersymmetry. The generic flow, with unequal mass parameters, is N=1 supersymmetric but goes to the SU(3)xU(1) symmetric, N=2 supersymmetric fixed point, where the masses are equal. The only flow that goes to the G_2 symmetric point occurs when one of the mass parameters is set to zero. There is an N=1 supersymmetric flow from the G_2 symmetric point to the SU(3)xU(1) symmetric point and supergravity gives a prediction of 1/\sqrt{6} for the anomalous dimensions of the operators that drive this flow. We examine these flows from the field theory perspective but find that one is limited to qualitative results since N=1 supersymmetry in three dimensions is insufficient to protect the form and dimensions of the operators involved in the flow.

Generalized Kaehler Potentials from Supergravity

We consider supersymmetric N=2 solutions with non-vanishing NS three-form. Building on worldsheet results, we reduce the problem to a single generalized Monge-Ampere equation on the generalized Kaehler potential K recently interpreted geometrically by Lindstrom, Rocek, Von Unge and Zabzine. One input in the procedure is a holomorphic function w that can be thought of as the effective superpotential for a D3 brane probe. The procedure is hence likely to be useful for finding gravity duals to field theories with non-vanishing abelian superpotential, such as Leigh-Strassler theories. We indeed show that a purely NS precursor of the Lunin-Maldacena dual to the beta-deformed N=4 super-Yang-Mills falls in our class.

Non-geometric String Backgrounds and Worldsheet Algebras

Using worldsheet Hamiltonian methods we derive a charge algebra which generalizes the Courant bracket to include fluxes of general index type. This is achieved by coupling a bi-vector to the Hamiltonian of the Polyakov model. This bracket is useful to describe so-called non-geometric backgrounds and has been discussed in the mathematics literature by Dmitry Roytenberg.

Bubbling Calabi-Yau geometry from matrix models

We study bubbling geometry in topological string theory. Specifically, we analyse Chern-Simons theory on both the 3-sphere and lens spaces in the presence of a Wilson loop insertion of an arbitrary representation. For each of these three manifolds we formulate a multi-matrix model whose partition function is the vev of the Wilson loop and compute the spectral curve. This spectral curve is the reduction to two dimensions of the mirror to a Calabi-Yau threefold which is the gravitational dual of the Wilson loop insertion. For lens spaces the dual geometries are new. We comment on a similar matrix model which appears in the context of Wilson loops in AdS/CFT.

Instantons, Hypermultiplets and the Heterotic String

Hypermultiplet couplings in type IIA string theory on a Calabi-Yau space can be quantum corrected by D2-brane instantons wrapping special Lagrangian cycles. On the other hand, hypermultiplet couplings in the heterotic string on a K3 surface are corrected by world-sheet instantons wrapping curves. In a class of examples, we relate these two sets of instanton corrections. We first present an analogue of the c-map for the heterotic string via a dual flux compactification of M-theory. Using this duality, we propose two ways of capturing quantum corrections to hypermultiplets. We then use the orientifold limit of certain F-theory compactifications to relate curves in K3 to special Lagrangians in dual type IIA compactifications. We conclude with some results from perturbative string theory for hypermultiplet F-terms and a conjecture about the topology of brane instantons.

Knot invariants and Calabi-Yau crystals

We show that Calabi-Yau crystals generate certain Chern-Simons knot invariants, with Lagrangian brane insertions generating the unknot and Hopf link invariants. Further, we make the connection of the crystal brane amplitudes to the topological vertex formulation explicit and show that the crystal naturally resums the corresponding topological vertex amplitudes. We also discuss the conifold and double wall crystal model in this context. The results suggest that the free energy associated to the crystal brane amplitudes can be simply expressed as a target space Gopakumar-Vafa expansion.

Inherited Duality and Quiver Gauge Theory

We study the duality group of $\hat{A}_{n-1}$ quiver gauge theories, primarily using their M5-brane construction. For $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, this duality group was first noted by Witten to be the mapping class group of a torus with $n$ punctures. We find that it is a certain quotient of this group that acts faithfully on gauge couplings. This quotient group contains the affine Weyl group of $\hat{A}_{n-1}$, $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. In fact there are $n$ non-commuting $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ subgroups, related to each other by conjugation using the $\mathbb{Z}_n$. When supersymmetry is broken to $\mathcal{N}=1$ by masses for the adjoint chiral superfields, an RG flow ensues which is believed to terminate at a CFT in the infrared. We find the explicit action of this duality group for small values of the adjoint masses, paying special attention to when the sum of the masses is non-zero. In the $\mathcal{N}=1$ CFT, Seiberg duality acts non-trivially on both gauge couplings and superpotential couplings and we interpret this duality as inherited from the $\mathcal{N}=2$ parent theory. We conjecture the action of S-duality in the CFT based on our results for small mass deformations. We also consider non-conformal deformations of these $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories. The cascading RG flows that ensue are a one-parameter generalization of those found by Klebanov and Strassler and by Cachazo {\it et. al.}. The universality exhibited by these flows is shown to be a simple consequence of paths generated by the action of the affine Weyl group.

The complex geometry of holographic flows of quiver gauge theories

We argue that the complete Klebanov-Witten flow solution must be described by a Calabi-Yau metric on the conifold, interpolating between the orbifold at infinity and the cone over T^(1,1) in the interior. We show that the complete flow solution is characterized completely by a single, simple, quasi-linear, second order PDE, or "master equation," in two variables. We show that the Pilch-Warner flow solution is almost Calabi-Yau: It has a complex structure, a hermitian metric, and a holomorphic (3,0)-form that is a square root of the volume form. It is, however, not Kahler. We discuss the relationship between the master equation derived here for Calabi-Yau geometries and such equations encountered elsewhere and that govern supersymmetric backgrounds with multiple, independent fluxes.

N=1 Field Theories and Fluxes in IIB String Theory

Deformation of N=2 quiver gauge theories by adjoint masses leads to fixed manifolds of N=1 superconformal field theories. We elaborate on the role of the complex three-form flux in the IIB duals to these fixed point theories, primarily using field theory techniques. We study the moduli space at a fixed point and find that it is either the two (complex) dimensional ALE space or three-dimensional generalized conifold, depending on the type of three-form flux that is present. We describe the exactly marginal operators that parameterize the fixed manifolds and find the operators which preserve the dimension of the moduli space. We also study deformations by arbitrary superpotentials W(Φ_i) for the adjoints. We invoke the a-theorem to show that there are no dangerously irrelevant operators like TrΦ_i^{k+1}, k>2 in the N=2 quiver gauge theories. The moduli space of the IR fixed point theory generally contains orbifold singularities if W(Φ_i) does not give a mass to the adjoints. Finally we examine some nonconformal N=1 quiver theories. We find evidence that the moduli space at the endpoint of a Seiberg duality cascade is always a three-dimensional generalized conifold. In general, the low-energy theory receives quantum corrections. In several non-cascading theories we find that the moduli space is a generalized conifold realized as a monodromic fibration.
