Attosecond soft X-ray pulses generated by chirp-dispersed manipulation in an XFEL reveal nonlinear core-electron dynamics in neon

Free-electron lasers have demonstrated their capability of generating intense attosecond X-ray pulses, which are the key to studying electron dynamics at their natural time scale and in specifically targeted electronic states, but come at the expanse of complicated generation schemes and stochastic pulse shapes. Here, we demonstrate a novel and simple operation concept based on the manipulation of the electron-bunch chirp-dispersion and working with the full 4.5 MHz repetition rate at the European XFEL in Germany. With a high-fidelity single-shot temporal characterisation, we detect X-ray pulses with durations of down to 200 attoseconds and peak powers reaching into the terawatt regime at ~1 keV photon energy. As a direct application, we present simultaneous measurements of nonlinear X-ray-matter interaction via time-resolved electron spectroscopy. Using the derived temporal pulse information and restricting the durations to a regime where individual X-ray pulses are shorter than the single-core-hole life time in neon atoms, we reveal an otherwise hidden peak-intensity dependence in the nonlinear dynamics of double-core-hole formation. Our results open the field of attosecond science to the investigation of electronic processes not only in the ground state but also in systems driven far off their equilibrium. They shed light on highly transient intermediate steps in complex electronic dynamics and thus promise to help build the conceptual bridge between fundamental physical processes and chemical photo-reactions.

Dichroic Electron Emission Patterns from Oriented Helium Ions

We report a joint experimental and theoretical study using a combination of polarization-controlled free-electron-laser (FEL) and near-infra\-red (NIR) pulses in a synchronized two-color photo\-ionization scheme. Excited He$^+$ ions, created by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) circularly polarized radiation from the XUV-FEL FERMI in the oriented $3p\, (m\!=\!+1)$ state, are exposed to circularly polarized 784-nm NIR radiation with peak intensities from $10^{12}\,\rm W/cm^2$ to $\rm 10^{13}\,W/cm^2$. The angular distribution of the ejected electrons exhibit a strong dichroism depending on the NIR intensity. While the co-rotating case is defined by a single path, for the counter-rotating case, there are two dominant pathways whose relative strength and phase difference are determined.

Probing the Linewidth of the 12.4-keV Solid-State $^{45}$Sc Isomeric Resonance

The $^{45}$Sc nuclear transition from the ground to the isomeric state at 12.389~keV, with a lifetime of 0.46~s, exhibits an extraordinarily narrow natural width of 1.4~feV and a quality factor $\simeq 10^{19}$ -- surpassing those of the most precise atomic clocks -- making $^{45}$Sc a compelling platform for advanced metrology and nuclear clocks. Here we investigate how closely the spectral width and quality factor of the solid-state $^{45}$Sc resonance can approach these natural limits. Using the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser, we confirm the isomer's lifetime via time-delayed incoherent $K_{α,β}$ fluorescence and observe previously unreported elastic fluorescence, yielding a partial internal conversion coefficient of 390(60). The absence of a clear nuclear forward scattering signal beyond a 2-ms delay implies environmental broadening of at least $500~Γ_{0}$ under experimental conditions, placing bounds on solid-state decoherence mechanisms. These findings set new experimental benchmarks for solid-state nuclear clock development.

Circular Dichroism in Multiphoton Ionization of Resonantly Excited Helium Ions near Channel Closing

The circular dichroism (CD) of photoelectrons generated by near-infrared (NIR) laser pulses using multiphoton ionization of excited He$^+$ ions in the 3p(m=+1) state. The ions were prepared by circularly polarized extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses. For circularly polarized NIR pulses co- and counter-rotating relative to the polarization of the XUV pulse, a complex variation of the CD is observed as a result of intensity- and polarization-dependent Freeman resonances, with and without additional dichroic AC-Stark shifts. The experimental results are compared with numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation to identify and interpret the pronounced variation of the experimentally observed CD.
