N=2 superconformal blocks and instanton partition functions

We consider the problem of computing (irregular) conformal blocks in 2d CFTs whose chiral symmetry algebra is the N=2 superconformal algebra. Our construction uses two ingredients: (i) the relation between the representation theories of the N=2 superconformal algebra and the affine sl(2) algebra, extended to the level of the conformal blocks, and (ii) the relation between affine sl(2) conformal blocks and instanton partition functions in the 4d N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with a surface defect. By combining these two facts we derive combinatorial expressions for the N=2 superconformal blocks in the Gaiotto limit.

Coset conformal blocks and N=2 gauge theories

It was recently suggested that the su(N)_k+su(N)_p/su(N)_{k+p} coset conformal field theories should be related to N=2 SU(N) gauge theories on R^4/Z_p. In this paper we study various aspects of this proposal. We perform explicit checks of the relation for (N,p)=(2,4), where the symmetry algebra of the coset is the so called S_3 parafermion algebra. Even though the symmetry algebra of the coset is unknown for generic (N,p) models, we manage to perform non-trivial checks in the general case by using knowledge of the Kac determinant of the coset CFT. We also find evidence that the conformal blocks of the (N,p) model should factorise into a certain product of p (N,1) conformal blocks. Precisely this structure is present in the instanton partition function on R^4/Z_p.

W-algebras and surface operators in N=2 gauge theories

A general class of W-algebras can be constructed from the affine sl(N) algebra by (quantum) Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction and are classified by partitions of N. Surface operators in an N=2 SU(N) 4d gauge theory are also classified by partitions of N. We argue that instanton partition functions of N=2 gauge theories in the presence of a surface operator can also be computed from the corresponding W-algebra. We test this proposal by analysing the Polyakov-Bershadsky W_3^(2) algebra obtaining results that are in agreement with the known partition functions for SU(3) gauge theories with a so called simple surface operator. As a byproduct, our proposal implies relations between the W_3^(2) and W_3 algebras.

Affine sl(N) conformal blocks from N=2 SU(N) gauge theories

Recently Alday and Tachikawa proposed a relation between conformal blocks in a two-dimensional theory with affine sl(2) symmetry and instanton partition functions in four-dimensional conformal N=2 SU(2) quiver gauge theories in the presence of a certain surface operator. In this paper we extend this proposal to a relation between conformal blocks in theories with affine sl(N) symmetry and instanton partition functions in conformal N=2 SU(N) quiver gauge theories in the presence of a surface operator. We also discuss the extension to non-conformal N=2 SU(N) theories.

Instanton partition functions in N=2 SU(N) gauge theories with a general surface operator, and their W-algebra duals

We write down an explicit conjecture for the instanton partition functions in 4d N=2 SU(N) gauge theories in the presence of a certain type of surface operator. These surface operators are classified by partitions of N, and for each partition there is an associated partition function. For the partition N=N we recover the Nekrasov formalism, and when N=1+...+1 we reproduce the result of Feigin et. al. For the case N=1+(N-1) our expression is consistent with an alternative formulation in terms of a restricted SU(N)xSU(N) instanton partition function. When N=1+...+1+2 the partition functions can also be obtained perturbatively from certain W-algebras known as quasi-superconformal algebras, in agreement with a recent general proposal.

A & B model approaches to surface operators and Toda theories

It has recently been argued by Alday et al that the inclusion of surface operators in 4d N=2 SU(2) quiver gauge theories should correspond to insertions of certain degenerate operators in the dual Liouville theory. So far only the insertion of a single surface operator has been treated (in a semi-classical limit). In this paper we study and generalise this proposal. Our approach relies on the use of topological string theory techniques. On the B-model side we show that the effects of multiple surface operator insertions in 4d N=2 gauge theories can be calculated using the B-model topological recursion method, valid beyond the semi-classical limit. On the mirror A-model side we find by explicit computations that the 5d lift of the SU(N) gauge theory partition function in the presence of (one or many) surface operators is equal to an A-model topological string partition function with the insertion of (one or many) toric branes. This is in agreement with an earlier proposal by Gukov. Our A-model results were motivated by and agree with what one obtains by combining the AGT conjecture with the dual interpretation in terms of degenerate operators. The topological string theory approach also opens up new possibilities in the study of 2d Toda field theories.

An A_r threesome: Matrix models, 2d CFTs and 4d N=2 gauge theories

We explore the connections between three classes of theories: A_r quiver matrix models, d=2 conformal A_r Toda field theories and d=4 N=2 supersymmetric conformal A_r quiver gauge theories. In particular, we analyse the quiver matrix models recently introduced by Dijkgraaf and Vafa and make detailed comparisons with the corresponding quantities in the Toda field theories and the N=2 quiver gauge theories. We also make a speculative proposal for how the matrix models should be modified in order for them to reproduce the instanton partition functions in quiver gauge theories in five dimensions.

A_{N-1} conformal Toda field theory correlation functions from conformal N=2 SU(N) quiver gauge theories

We propose a relation between correlation functions in the 2d A_{N-1} conformal Toda theories and the Nekrasov instanton partition functions in certain conformal N=2 SU(N) 4d quiver gauge theories. Our proposal generalises the recently uncovered relation between the Liouville theory and SU(2) quivers. New features appear in the analysis that have no counterparts in the Liouville case.

Rigid surface operators and S-duality: some proposals

We study surface operators in the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with gauge groups SO(n) and Sp(2n). As recently shown by Gukov and Witten these theories have a class of rigid surface operators which are expected to be related by S-duality. The rigid surface operators are of two types, unipotent and semisimple. We make explicit proposals for how the S-duality map should act on unipotent surface operators. We also discuss semisimple surface operators and make some proposals for certain subclasses of such operators.

Towards relating the kappa-symmetric and pure-spinor versions of the supermembrane

We study the relation between the kappa-symmetric formulation of the supermembrane in eleven dimensions and the pure-spinor version. Recently, Berkovits related the Green-Schwarz and pure-spinor superstrings. In this paper, we attempt to extend this method to the supermembrane. We show that it is possible to reinstate the reparameterisation constraints in the pure-spinor formulation of the supermembrane by introducing a topological sector and performing a similarity transformation. The resulting BRST charge is then of conventional type and is argued to be (related to) the BRST charge of the kappa-symmetric supermembrane in a formulation where all second class constraints are 'gauge unfixed' to first class constraints. In our analysis we also encounter a natural candidate for a (non-covariant) supermembrane analogue of the superstring b ghost.

Zero-energy states of N = 4 SYM on T^3: S-duality and the mapping class group

We continue our studies of the low-energy spectrum of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on a spatial three-torus. In two previous papers, we computed the spectrum of normalizable zero-energy states for all choices of gauge group and all values of the electric and magnetic 't Hooft fluxes, and checked its invariance under the SL_2(Z) S-duality group. In this paper, we refine the analysis by also decomposing the space of bound states into irreducible unitary representations of the SL_3(Z) mapping class group of the three-torus. We perform a detailed study of the S-dual pairs of theories with gauge groups Spin(2n+1) and Sp(2n). The predictions of S-duality (which commutes with the mapping class group) are fulfilled as expected, but the proof requires some surprisingly intricate combinatorial infinite product identities.

A note on S-duality for the N=1* Sp(2n) and SO(2n+1) super-Yang-Mills theories

We study the N=1* supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge groups Sp(2n) and SO(2n+1). These theories are obtained from the corresponding N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories via a mass deformation. We show that the number of quantum vacua in the Sp(2n) theory is equal to the number of quantum vacua in the SO(2n+1) theory. This constitutes non-trivial support for S-duality between these theories. The verification of the equality of the number of quantum vacua involves a rather esoteric identity due to Ramanujan.

Bound states in N = 4 SYM on T^3: Spin(2n) and the exceptional groups

The low energy spectrum of (3+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a spatial three-torus contains a certain number of bound states, characterized by their discrete abelian magnetic and electric 't Hooft fluxes. At weak coupling, the wave-functions of these states are supported near points in the moduli space of flat connections where the unbroken gauge group is semi-simple. The number of such states is related to the number of normalizable bound states at threshold in the supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with 16 supercharges based on this unbroken group. Mathematically, the determination of the spectrum relies on the classification of almost commuting triples with semi-simple centralizers. We complete the work begun in a previous paper, by computing the spectrum of bound states in theories based on the even-dimensional spin groups and the exceptional groups. The results satisfy the constraints of S-duality in a rather non-trivial way.

Low-energy spectrum of N = 4 super-Yang-Mills on T^3: flat connections, bound states at threshold, and S-duality

We study (3+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a spatial three-torus. The low energy spectrum consists of a number of continua of states of arbitrarily low energies. Although the theory has no mass-gap, it appears that the dimensions and discrete abelian magnetic and electric 't Hooft fluxes of the continua are computable in a semi-classical approximation. The wave-functions of the low-energy states are supported on submanifolds of the moduli space of flat connections, at which various subgroups of the gauge group are left unbroken. The field theory degrees of freedom transverse to such a submanifold are approximated by supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with 16 supercharges, based on the semi-simple part of this unbroken group. Conjectures about the number of normalizable bound states at threshold in the latter theory play a crucial role in our analysis. In this way, we compute the low-energy spectra in the cases where the simply connected cover of the gauge group is given by SU(n), Spin(2n+1) or Sp(2n). We then show that the constraints of S-duality are obeyed for unique values of the number of bound states in the matrix quantum mechanics. In the cases based on Spin(2n+1) and Sp(2n), the proof involves surprisingly subtle combinatorial identities, which hint at a rich underlying structure.

Pure-spinor superstrings in d=2,4,6

We continue the study of the d=2,4,6 pure-spinor superstring models introduced in [1]. By explicitly solving the pure-spinor constraint we show that these theories have vanishing central charge and work out the (covariant) current algebra for the Lorentz currents. We argue that these super-Poincare covariant models may be thought of as compactifications of the superstring on CY_{4,3,2}, and take some steps toward making this precise by constructing a map to the RNS superstring variables. We also discuss the relation to the so called hybrid superstrings, which describe the same type of compactifications.

D-Brane Boundary States in the Pure Spinor Superstring

We study the construction of D-brane boundary states in the pure spinor formalism for the quantisation of the superstring. This is achieved both via a direct analysis of the definition of D-brane boundary states in the pure spinor conformal field theory, as well as via comparison between standard RNS and pure spinor descriptions of the superstring. Regarding the map between RNS and pure spinor formulations of the superstring, we shed new light on the tree level zero mode saturation rule. Within the pure spinor formalism we propose an explicit expression for the D-brane boundary state in a flat spacetime background. While the non-zero mode sector mostly follows from a simple understanding of the pure spinor conformal field theory, the zero mode sector requires a deeper analysis which is one of the main points in this work. With the construction of the boundary states at hand, we give a prescription for calculating scattering amplitudes in the presence of a D-brane. Finally, we also briefly discuss the coupling to the world-volume gauge field and show that the D-brane low-energy effective action is correctly reproduced.

A note on instanton counting for N=2 gauge theories with classical gauge groups

We study the prepotential of N=2 gauge theories using the instanton counting techniques introduced by Nekrasov. For the SO theories without matter we find a closed expression for the full prepotential and its string theory gravitational corrections. For the more subtle case of Sp theories without matter we discuss general features and compute the prepotential up to instanton number three. We also briefly discuss SU theories with matter in the symmetric and antisymmetric representations. We check all our results against the predictions of the corresponding Seiberg-Witten geometries.

An orientifold of adS_5xT^11 with D7-branes, the associated alpha'^2- corrections and their role in the dual N=1 Sp(2N+2M)xSp(2N) gauge theory

We study the N=1 Sp(2N+2M)xSp(2N) gauge theory on a stack of N physical and M fractional D3-branes in the background of an orientifolded conifold. The gravity dual is a type IIB orientifold of adS_5xT^11 (with certain background fluxes turned on) containing an O7-plane and 8 D7-branes. In the conformal case (M=0), we argue that the alpha'^2-corrections localized on the 8 D7-branes and the O7-plane should give vanishing contributions to the supergravity equations of motion for the bulk fields. In the cascading case (M not equal to 0), we argue that the alpha'^2-terms give rise to corrections which in the dual Sp(2N+2M)xSp(2N) gauge theory can be interpreted as corrections to the anomalous dimensions of the matter fields.
