Tuning topological phases and exceptional points in a non-Hermitian Rice Mele model beyond nearest neighbors

Exceptional points are degeneracies characteristic of non-Hermitian operators, where eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce, rendering the Hamiltonian defective. We investigate the exceptional-point structure and topological properties of a generalized non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model with balanced gain and loss, as well as next-nearest-neighbor hopping. The system hosts only second-order exceptional points under both periodic and open boundary conditions. Under periodic boundary conditions, the exceptional points in parameter space lie on lines and ellipses that are independent of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping, since the latter enters the bulk Hamiltonian only as an identity contribution. Under open boundary conditions, this independence is broken: the next-nearest-neighbor hopping not only shifts the energy of existing exceptional points but also generates new ones, with a specific condition signaling a topological gap closing observed only in the open-boundary spectrum. At special parameter points, multiple simultaneous second-order exceptional points yield degenerate configurations whose degeneracy grows with system size. Exceptional point locations are identified numerically via the condition number of the eigenvector matrix and confirmed by Jordan decomposition. The topological phase diagram, computed via a winding number framework for non-Hermitian systems without symmetry protection, reveals sectors with zero, one, and two edge states; the bulk-boundary correspondence is confirmed, and the non-Hermitian skin effect is absent.

Transcendental momentum quantization in semiconducting Rashba nanowires and zero energy states in their normal and superconducting phase

We study finite system properties of the canonical low energy model for a semiconducting nanowire with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The case of an isolated wire as well as of one proximitized by an s-wave superconductor are considered. Already for the normal wire, the presence of spin-orbit coupling leads to eigenstates of the finite system composed of more than two momentum eigenstates. The quantization condition for the wavevectors is not that of a quantum box, but given instead by a transcendental equation linking the involved wavevectors. For the wire with superconducting pairing, the presence of electron and hole channels complicates the composition of the eigenstates. In this case we derive an approximate quantization condition close to the phase boundary, and a condition for the appearance of exact zero energy states. It can be satisfied both in the topological and in the trivial phase. Both the trivial and topological zero energy states contribute to the linear transport through Andreev reflection and direct transmission processes, with their relative importance depending on the degree of the states' localization at the boundary.

Linear and non-linear transport across a finite Kitaev chain: an exact analytical study

We present exact analytical results for the differential conductance of a finite Kitaev chain in an N-S-N configuration, where the topological superconductor is contacted on both sides with normal leads. Our results are obtained with the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's functions technique, using the full spectrum of the Kitaev chain without resorting to minimal models. A closed formula for the linear conductance is given, and the analytical procedure to obtain the differential conductance for the transport mediated by higher excitations is described. The linear conductance attains the maximum value of $e^2/h$ only for the exact zero energy states. Also the differential conductance exhibits a complex pattern created by numerous crossings and anticrossings in the excitation spectrum. We reveal the crossings to be protected by the inversion symmetry, while the anticrossings result from a pairing-induced hybridization of particle-like and hole-like solutions with the same inversion character. Our comprehensive treatment of the Kitaev chain allows us also to identify the contributions of both local and non-local transmission processes to transport at arbitrary bias voltage. Local Andreev reflection processes dominate the transport within the bulk gap and diminish for higher excited states, but reemerge when the bias voltage probes the avoided crossings. The non-local direct transmission is enhanced above the bulk gap, but contributes also to the transport mediated by the topological states.

Exact eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the finite Kitaev chain and its topological properties

We present a comprehensive, analytical treatment of the finite Kitaev chain for arbitrary chemical potential. We derive the momentum quantization conditions and present exact analytical formulae for the resulting energy spectrum and eigenstate wave functions, encompassing boundary and bulk states. In accordance with an analysis based on the winding number topological invariant, and as expected from the bulk-edge correspondence, the boundary states are topological in nature. They can have zero, exponentially small or even finite energy. A numerical analysis confirms their robustness against disorder.
