Thermo-electric transport in gauge/gravity models with momentum dissipation

We present a systematic definition and analysis of the thermo-electric linear response in gauge/gravity systems focusing especially on models with massive gravity in the bulk and therefore momentum dissipation in the dual field theory. A precise treatment of finite counter-terms proves to be essential to yield a consistent physical picture whose hydrodynamic and beyond-hydrodynamics behaviors noticeably match with field theoretical expectations. The model furnishes a possible gauge/gravity description of the crossover from the quantum-critical to the disorder-dominated Fermi-liquid behaviors, as expected in graphene.

Holography in flat spacetime: 4D theories and electromagnetic duality on the border

We consider a free topological model in 5D euclidean flat spacetime, built from two rank-2 tensor fields. Despite the fact that the bulk of the model does not have any particular physical interpretation, on its 4D planar edge nontrivial gauge field theories are recovered, whose features are entirely determined by the gauge and discrete symmetries of the bulk. In particular no 4D dynamics can be obtained without imposing a Time Reversal invariance in the bulk. Remarkably, one of the two possible edge models selected by the Time Reversal symmetries displays a true electromagnetic duality, which relates strong and weak coupling regimes. Moreover this same model, when considered on-shell, coincides with the Maxwell theory, which therefore can be thought of as a 4D boundary theory of a seemingly harmless 5D topological model.

Coexistence of two vector order parameters: a holographic model for ferromagnetic superconductivity

We study a generalization of the standard holographic p-wave superconductor featuring two interacting vector order parameters. Basing our argument on the symmetry and linear response properties of the model, we propose it as a holographic effective theory describing a strongly coupled ferromagnetic superconductor. We show that the two order parameters undergo concomitant condensations as a manifestation of an intrinsically interlaced electric/magnetic dynamics. Such intertwined dynamics is confirmed by the study of the transport properties. We characterize thoroughly the equilibrium and the linear response (i.e. optical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility) of the model at hand by means of a probe approximation analysis. Some insight about the effects of backreaction in the normal phase can be gained by analogy with the s-wave unbalanced holographic superconductor.

3+1D Massless Weyl spinors from bosonic scalar-tensor duality

We consider the fermionization of a bosonic free theory characterized by the 3+1D scalar - tensor duality. This duality can be interpreted as the dimensional reduction, via a planar boundary, of the 4+1D topological BF theory. In this model, adopting the Sommerfield tomographic representation of quantized bosonic fields, we explicitly build a fermionic operator and its associated Klein factor such that it satisfies the correct anticommutation relations. Interestingly, we demonstrate that this operator satisfies the massless Dirac equation and that it can be identified with a 3+1D Weyl spinor. Finally, as an explicit example, we write the integrated charge density in terms of the tomographic transformed bosonic degrees of freedom.

Duality and Dimensional Reduction of 5D BF Theory

A planar boundary introduced à la Symanzik in the 5D topological BF theory, with the only requirement of locality and power counting, allows to uniquely determine a gauge invariant, non topological 4D Lagrangian. The boundary condition on the bulk fields is interpreted as a duality relation for the boundary fields, in analogy with the fermionization duality which holds in the 3D case. This suggests that the 4D degrees of freedom might be fermionic, although starting from a bosonic bulk theory. The method we propose to dimensionally reduce a Quantum Field Theory and to identify the resulting degrees of freedom can be applied to a generic spacetime dimension.

3D Dynamics of 4D Topological BF Theory With Boundary

We consider the four dimensional abelian topological BF theory with a planar boundary introduced following the Symanzik's method. We find the most general boundary conditions compatible with the fields equations broken by the boundary. The residual gauge invariance is described by means of two Ward identities which generate an algebra of conserved currents. We interpret this algebra as canonical commutation relations of fields, which we use to construct a three dimensional Lagrangian. As a remarkable by-product, the (unique) boundary condition which we found, can be read as a duality relation between 3D dynamical variables.

Charge tunneling in fractional edge channels

We explain recent experimental observations on effective charge of edge states tunneling through a quantum point contact in the weak backscattering regime. We focus on the behavior of the excess noise and on the effective tunneling charge as a function of temperature and voltage. By introducing a minimal hierarchical model different filling factors, ν=p/(2p+1), in the Jain sequence are treated on equal footing, in presence also of non-universal interactions. The agreement found with the experiments for ν=2/3 and ν=2/5 reinforces the description of tunneling of bunching of quasiparticles at low energies and quantitatively defines the condition under which one expects to measure the fundamental quasiparticle charge. We propose high-order current cumulant measurement to cross-check the validity of the above scenario and to better clarify the peculiar temperature behavior of the effective charges measured in the experiments.

Neutral modes edge state dynamics through quantum point contacts

Dynamics of neutral modes for fractional quantum Hall states is investigated for a quantum point contact geometry in the weak-backscattering regime. The effective field theory introduced by Fradkin-Lopez for edge states in the Jain sequence is generalized to the case of propagating neutral modes. The dominant tunnelling processes are identified also in the presence of non-universal phenomena induced by interactions. The crossover regime in the backscattering current between tunnelling of single-quasiparticles and of agglomerates of p-quasiparticles is analysed. We demonstrate that higher order cumulants of the backscattering current fluctuations are a unique resource to study quantitatively the competition between different carrier charges. We find that propagating neutral modes are a necessary ingredient in order to explain this crossover phenomena.

Multiple-quasiparticle agglomerates at ν=2/5

We investigate the dynamics of quasiparticle agglomerates in edge states of the Jain sequence for ν=2/5. Comparison of the Fradkin-Lopez model with the Wen one is presented within a field theoretical construction, focusing on similarities and differences. We demonstrate that both models predict the same universal role for the multiple-quasiparticle agglomerates that dominate on single quasiparticles at low energy. This result is induced by the presence of neutral modes with finite velocity and is essential to explain the anomalous behavior of tunneling conductance and noise through a point contact.

Relevance of multiple-quasiparticle tunneling between edge states at ν=p/(2np+1)

We present an explanation for the anomalous behavior in tunneling conductance and noise through a point contact between edge states in the Jain series $ν=p/(2np+1)$, for extremely weak-backscattering and low temperatures [Y.C. Chung, M. Heiblum, and V. Umansky, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{91}}, 216804 (2003)]. We consider edge states with neutral modes propagating at finite velocity, and we show that the activation of their dynamics causes the unexpected change in the temperature power-law of the conductance. Even more importantly, we demonstrate that multiple-quasiparticles tunneling at low energies becomes the most relevant process. This result will be used to explain the experimental data on current noise where tunneling particles have a charge that can reach $p$ times the single quasiparticle charge. In this paper we analyze the conductance and the shot noise to substantiate quantitatively the proposed scenario.

Symanzik's Method Applied To The Fractional Quantum Hall Edge States

In this paper we consider an abelian Chern-Simons theory with plane boundary and we show, following Symankiz's quite general approach, how the known results for edge states in the Laughlin series can be derived in a systematic way by the separability condition. Moreover we show that the conserved boundary currents find a natural and explicit interpretation in terms of the continuity equation and the Tomonaga-Luttinger commutation relation for electronic density is recovered.

Transport of fractional Hall quasiparticles through an antidot

Current statistics of an antidot in the fractional quantum Hall regime is studied for Laughlin's series. The chiral Luttinger liquid picture of edge states with a renormalized interaction exponent $g$ is adopted. Several peculiar features are found in the sequential tunneling regime. On one side, current displays negative differential conductance and double-peak structures when $g<1$. On the other side, universal sub-poissonian transport regimes are identified through an analysis of higher current moments. A comparison between Fano factor and skewness is proposed in order to clearly distinguish the charge of the carriers, regardless of possible non-universal interaction renormalizations. Super-poissonian statistics is obtained in the shot limit for $g<1$, and plasmonic effects due to the finite-size antidot are tracked.

Electron conductivity and second generation Composite Fermions

The relation between the conductivity tensors of Composite Fermions and electrons is extended to second generation Composite Fermions. It is shown that it crucially depends on the coupling matrix for the Chern-Simons gauge field. The results are applied to a model of interacting Composite Fermions that can explain both the anomalous plateaus in spin polarization and the corresponding maxima in the resistivity observed in recent transport experiments.

On the regularization of Fredholm integral equations of the first kind

In this paper the problem of recovering a regularized solution of the Fredholm integral equations of the first kind with Hermitian and square-integrable kernels, and with data corrupted by additive noise, is considered. Instead of using a variational regularization of Tikhonov type, based on a priori global bounds, we propose a method of truncation of eigenfunction expansions that can be proved to converge asymptotically, in the sense of the $L^2$--norm, in the limit of noise vanishing. Here we extend the probabilistic counterpart of this procedure by constructing a probabilistically regularized solution without assuming any structure of order on the sequence of the Fourier coefficients of the data. This probabilistic approach allows us to use the statistical tools proper of time-series analysis, and in this way we attain a new regularizing algorithm, which is illustrated by some numerical examples. Finally, a comparison with solutions obtained by the means of the variational regularization exhibits how some intrinsic limits of the variational-based techniques can be overcome.

On ground states of interacting Composite Fermions with spin at half filling

The effects of interactions in a 2D electron system in a strong magnetic field of two degenerate Landau levels with opposite spins and at filling factors 1/2 are studied. Using the Chern-Simons gauge transformation, the system is mapped to Composite Fermions. The fluctuations of the gauge field induce an effective interaction between the Composite Fermions which can be attractive in both the particle-particle and in the particle-hole channel. As a consequence, a spin-singlet (s-wave) ground state of Composite Fermions can exist with a finite pair-breaking energy gap for particle-particle or particle-hole pairs. The competition between these two possible ground states is discussed. For long-range Coulomb interaction the particle-particle state is favored if the interaction strength is small. With increasing interaction strength there is a crossover towards the particle-hole state. If the interaction is short range, only the particle-particle state is possible.

Exact Consequences of the Trace Anomaly in Four Dimensions

The general form of the stress-tensor three-point function in four dimensions is obtained by solving the Ward identities for the diffeomorphism and Weyl symmetries. Several properties of this correlator are discussed, such as the renormalization and scheme independence and the analogies with the anomalous chiral triangle. At the critical point, the coefficients a and c of the four-dimensional trace anomaly are related to two finite, scheme-independent amplitudes of the three-point function. Off-criticality, the imaginary parts of these amplitudes satisfy sum rules which express the total renormalization-group flow of a and c between pairs of critical points. Although these sum rules are similar to that satisfied by the two-dimensional central charge, the monotonicity of the flow, i.e. the four-dimensional analogue of the c-theorem, remains to be proven.

Vacuum Expectation Values from a variational approach

In this letter we propose to use an extension of the variational approach known as Truncated Conformal Space to compute numerically the Vacuum Expectation Values of the operators of a conformal field theory perturbed by a relevant operator. As an example we estimate the VEV's of all (UV regular) primary operators of the Ising model and of some of the Tricritical Ising Model conformal field theories when perturbed by any choice of the relevant primary operators. We compare our results with some other independent predictions.

Tricritical Ising Model near criticality

The most relevant thermal perturbation of the continuous d=2 minimal conformal theory with c=7/10 (Tricritical Ising Model) is treated here. This model describes the scaling region of the phi^6 universality class near the tricritical point. The problematic IR divergences of the naive perturbative expansion around conformal theories are dealt within the OPE approach developed at all orders by the authors. The main result is a description of the short distance behaviour of correlators that is compared with existing long distance expansion (form factors approach) related to the integrability of the model.
