Thermodynamic instabilities in holographic neutron stars at finite temperature

We study the thermodynamics of a self-gravitating system of neutral fermions at finite temperature and analyze its backreaction in an asymptotically AdS space. We evaluate numerically the free entropy as a function of temperature, and perform a stability analysis applying the simple and powerful graphical method referred as the Katz criterion. We found that for highly-enough degenerate fermionic solutions, the onset of thermodynamic instability arises, though prior to the turning point on the mass as a function of the central density. Our results for finite temperature fermions provide a novel and more general way to study the confinement to deconfinement phase transition in the holographic field theory, generalizing former conclusions developed for systems at zero temperature.

Exact solutions for a ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

On the two-dimensional non-linear $Σ$-model describing a ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we build three families of exact static solutions depending on a single Cartesian variable. One of them describes a clockwise helix configuration, that characterizes the ground state of the system. A second one corresponds to a counterclockwise helix, representing an excited state. These two families of solutions are parameterized by a continuous parameter that depends on the magnetic field and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling. Finally, the third family exists only for isolated values of the same parameter, corresponding to a discrete family of Viviani curves on the target sphere. The degeneracy of the resulting spectrum suggests that an approximate symmetry may emerge at specific values of the magnetic field, at which additional solutions could then exist.

Strange metal crossover in the doped holographic superconductor

In a recent paper, Kiritsis and Li presented a holographic model to study the competition between different orders at finite doping in holographic superconductors. In the present work, we introduce fermions into such model and study the fermionic spectral functions in the normal phase at zero and finite temperatures. Combining analytic and numerical methods, we found that there is a crossover from a strange metal with short lived excitations at small doping, into a Fermi liquid with well defined quasiparticles at large doping. The critical doping at which excitations becomes long lived increases with temperature. The emerging phase diagram is qualitatively similar to that of High Temperature Superconductors.

Doped Holographic Superconductor in an External Magnetic Field

We add the magnetic field axis to the holographic model for a doped superconductor proposed by Kiritsis and Li. We explore the resulting superconducting dome, in a particular region of parameters in which the equations for the superconductor can be mapped into the previously known undoped case.

Vacua of Exotic Massive 3D Gravity

We consider the recently proposed exotic 3D massive gravity. We show that this theory has a rich space of vacua, including asymptotically Anti de-Sitter (AdS) geometries obeying either the standard Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions or the weakened asymptotic behavior of the so-called Log-gravity. Both sectors contain non-Einstein spaces with $SO(2)\times \mathbb{R}$ isometry group, showing that the Birkhoff theorem does not hold all over the parameter space, even if strong AdS boundary conditions are imposed. Some of these geometries correspond to 3D black holes dressed with a Log-gravity graviton. We conjecture that such geometries appear in a curve of the parameter space where the exotic 3D massive gravity on AdS$_3$ is dual to a chiral conformal field theory. The theory also contains other interesting vacua, including different families of non-AdS black holes.

Complete Classification of Four-Dimensional Black Hole and Membrane Solutions in IR-modified Hořava Gravity

Hořava gravity has been proposed as a renormalizable, higher-derivative gravity without ghost problems, by considering different scaling dimensions for space and time. In the non-relativistic higher-derivative generalization of Einstein gravity, the meaning and physical properties of black hole and membrane space-times are quite different from the conventional ones. Here, we study the singularity and horizon structures of such geometries in IR-modified Hořava gravity, where the so-called "detailed balance" condition is softly broken in IR. We classify all the viable static solutions without naked singularities and study its close connection to non-singular cosmology solutions. We find that, in addition to the usual point-like singularity at $r=0$, there exists a "surface-like" curvature singularity at finite $r=r_S$ which is the cutting edge of the real-valued space-time. The degree of divergence of such singularities is milder than those of general relativity, and the Hawking temperature of the horizons diverges when they coincide with the singularities. As a byproduct we find that, in addition to the usual "asymptotic limit," a consistent flow of coupling constants, that we called "GR flow limit," is needed in order to recover general relativity in the IR.

Generalized susceptibilities and Landau parameters for anisotropic Fermi liquids

We study Fermi liquids with a Fermi surface that lacks continuous rotational invariance, and in the presence of an arbitrary quartic interaction. We obtain the expressions of the generalized static susceptibilities that measure the linear response of a generic order parameter to a perturbation of the Hamiltonian. We apply our formulae to the spin and charge susceptibilities. Based on the resulting expressions, we make a proposal for the definition of the Landau parameters in non-isotropic Fermi liquid.
