Non-uniform quantum geometry stabilizes generalized Wigner crystals

Moiré materials host fractional Chern insulators and electron crystals in close proximity, but the mechanism selecting between them remains an open question. We address this competition in Chern bands with ideal but momentum-dependent quantum geometry -- Aharonov-Casher bands. We present an ansatz wave function for generalized Wigner crystals and, by comparing its energy to that of the competing Laughlin-like state, map out the phase diagram at filling fraction $ν=1/m$ as a function of the degree of geometric non-uniformity. Our work identifies quantum geometry-controlled zero point fluctuations of the charge density of the generalized Wigner crystal as the mechanism controlling its relative stability, implying a kind of quantum Lindemann criterion for the crystal-liquid phase boundary.

Theory of magnetoroton bands in moiré materials

The recent realization of Hofstadter spectra and fractional Chern insulators in moiré materials has introduced a new ingredient, a periodic lattice potential, to the study of quantum Hall phases. While the fractionalized states in moiré systems are expected to be in the same universality class as their counterparts in Landau levels, the periodic potential can have qualitative and quantitative effects on physical observables. Here, we examine how the magnetoroton collective modes of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are altered by external periodic potentials. Employing a single-mode-approximation, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the low-energy neutral excitations expressed in terms of three-point density correlation functions, which are computed using Monte Carlo. Our analysis is applicable to FQH states in graphene with a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate and also to fractional Chern insulator (FCI) states in twisted MoTe$_2$ bilayers. We predict experimentally testable trends in the THz absorption characteristics of FCI and FQH states and estimate the external potential strength at which a soft-mode phase transition occurs between FQH and charge density wave states.

Band mixing and particle-hole asymmetry in moiré fractional Chern insulators

We investigate the effect of remote band mixing on the stability of fractional Chern insulators in a family of models that approximate continuum descriptions of moiré materials. Our results suggest that the experimentally observed asymmetry between filling fractions $ν=1/3$ and $ν=2/3$ in twisted MoTe$_2$ originates from a competition between a fractional Chern insulator, an electron Wigner crystal, and a hole Wigner crystal. In the absence of band mixing, the leading instability at $ν= 1/3$ is the electron crystal, whereas at $ν= 2/3$ the main competing phase is the hole crystal. Remote band mixing substantially lowers the energy of the electron crystal but has only a weak effect on the hole crystal. Consequently, it destabilizes the fractional Chern insulator at $ν=1/3$ more strongly than at $ν=2/3$. This mechanism also provides an explanation for the emergence of re-entrant integer quantum anomalous Hall states in moiré MoTe$_2$ for fillings $ν>1/2$.

Effects of Berry curvature on ideal fractional Chern insulator many-body gaps

We investigate the many-body ground states in a family of fractionally-filled bands where the Berry curvature fluctuations can be tuned while maintaining ideal quantum geometry. We numerically find that the neutral gap of the fractional Chern insulator (FCI) ground state decreases as the Berry curvature becomes less homogeneous, ultimately driving an instability to a charge density wave. We further extend our analysis to bands perturbed away from the ideal limit and give examples where a less ideal band geometry results in a more stable FCI phase. To explain our findings, we apply the single mode approximation to the ground state wave functions of the ideal band, from which we obtain analytic expressions for the magnetoroton minimum. Finally, we make a connection between our results and experimentally relevant systems where FCIs have been observed.

Higher Chern bands in helical homotrilayer transition metal dichalcogenides

We propose helically twisted homotrilayer transition metal dichalcogenides as a platform for realizing correlated topological phases of matter with higher and tunable Chern numbers. We show that a clear separation of scales emerges for small twist angles, allowing us to derive a low-energy continuum model that captures the physics within moiré-scale domains. We identify regimes of twist angle and displacement field for which the highest-lying hole band is isolated from other bands and is topological with $K$-valley Chern number $C=-2$. We demonstrate that varying the displacement field can induce a transition from $C=-2$ to $C=-1$, as well as from a topologically trivial band to a $C=-1$ band. We derive an effective tight-binding description for a high-symmetry stacking domain which is valid for a wide range of twist angles, and we show that the $C=-2$ band can remain stable at filling fraction $ν=-1$ in the presence of interactions in Hartree-Fock calculations.

Experimental signature of layer skyrmions and implications for band topology in twisted WSe2 bilayers

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) twisted homobilayers have been established as an ideal platform for studying strong correlation phenomena, as exemplified by the recent discovery of fractional Chern insulator (FCI) states in twisted MoTe2 and Chern insulators (CI) and unconventional superconductivity in twisted WSe2 (tWSe2). In these systems, nontrivial topology in the strongly layer-hybridized regime can arise from a spatial patterning of interlayer tunneling amplitudes and layer-dependent potentials that yields a lattice of layer skyrmions. Here we report on experimental signatures of skyrmion textures in the layer degree of freedom of Rhombohedral-stacked (R-stacked) tWSe2 homobilayers. This observation is based on scanning tunneling spectroscopy that separately resolves the Gamma-valley and K-valley moiré electronic states. We show that Gamma-valley states are subjected to a moiré potential with an amplitude of ~ 120 meV. At ~150 meV above the Gamma-valley, the K-valley states are subjected to a weaker moiré potential of ~30 meV. Most significantly, we reveal opposite layer polarizations of the K-valley at the MX and XM sites within the moiré unit cell, confirming the theoretically predicted layer skyrmion texture. The dI/dV mappings allow the parameters that enter the continuum model of moiré bands in twisted TMD bilayers to be determined experimentally, further establishing a direct correlation between the shape of the LDOS profile in real space and the topology of topmost moiré band.

Adiabatic Approximation and Aharonov-Casher Bands in Twisted Homobilayer TMDs

Topological flat moiré bands with nearly ideal quantum geometry have been identified in homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenide moiré superlattices, and are thought to be crucial for understanding the fractional Chern insulating states recently observed therein. Previous work proposed viewing the system using an adiabatic approximation that replaces the position-dependence of the layer spinor with a nonuniform periodic effective magnetic field. When the local zero-point kinetic energy of this magnetic field cancels identically against that of an effective Zeeman energy, a Bloch-band version of Aharonov-Casher zero-energy modes, which we refer to as Aharonov-Casher band, emerges leading to ideal quantum geometry. Here, we critically examine the validity of the adiabatic approximation and identify the parameter regimes under which Aharonov-Casher bands emerge. We show that the adiabatic approximation is accurate for a wide range of parameters including those realized in experiments. Furthermore, we show that while the cancellation leading to the emergence of Aharonov-Casher bands is generally not possible beyond the leading Fourier harmonic, the leading harmonic is the dominant term in the Fourier expansions of the zero-point kinetic energy and Zeeman energy. As a result, the leading harmonic expansion accurately captures the trend of the bandwidth and quantum geometry, though it may fail to quantitatively reproduce more detailed information about the bands such as the Berry curvature distribution.

Itinerant ferromagnetism in transition metal dichalcogenides moiré superlattices

Moiré materials are artificial crystals formed at van der Waals heterojunctions that have emerged as a highly tunable platform to realize much of the rich quantum physics of electrons in atomic scale solids, also providing opportunities to discover new quantum phases of matter. Here we use finite-size exact diagonalization methods to explore the physics of single-band itinerant electron ferromagnetism in semiconductor moiré materials. We predict where ferromagnetism is likely to occur in triangular-lattice moiré systems, and where it is likely to yield the highest Curie temperatures.

Magic Angles and Fractional Chern Insulators in Twisted Homobilayer TMDs

We explain the appearance of magic angles and fractional Chern insulators in twisted K-valley homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides by mapping their continuum model to a Landau level problem. Our approach relies on an adiabatic approximation for the quantum mechanics of valence band holes in a layer-pseudospin field that is valid for sufficiently small twist angles and on a lowest Landau level approximation that is valid for sufficiently large twist angles. It simply explains why the quantum geometry of the lowest moiré miniband is nearly ideal at particular flat-band twist angles, predicts that topological flat bands occur only when the valley-dependent moiré potential is sufficiently strong compared to the interlayer tunneling amplitude, and provides a powerful starting point for the study of interactions

Magnetism and Quantum Melting in Moiré-Material Wigner Crystals

Recent experiments have established that semiconductor-based moiré materials can host incompressible states at a series of fractional moiré-miniband fillings. These states have been identified as generalized Wigner crystals in which electrons localize on a subset of the available triangular-lattice moiré superlattice sites. In this article, we use momentum-space exact diagonalization to investigate the many-body ground state evolution at rational fillings from the weak-hopping classical lattice gas limit, in which only spin degrees-of-freedom are active at low energies, to the strong-hopping metallic regime where the Wigner crystals melt. We specifically address the nature of the magnetic ground states of the generalized Wigner crystals at fillings $ν$ = 1/3 and $ν$ = 2/3.

Pressure--enhanced fractional Chern insulators in moiré transition metal dichalcogenides along a magic line

We show that pressure applied to twisted WSe$_2$ can enhance the many-body gap and region of stability of a fractional Chern insulator at filling $ν= 1/3$. Our results are based on exact diagonalization of a continuum model, whose pressure-dependence is obtained through {\it ab initio} methods. We interpret our results in terms of a {\it magic line} in the pressure-{\it vs}-twist angle phase diagram: along the magic line, the bandwidth of the topmost moiré valence band is minimized while simultaneously its quantum geometry nearly resembles that of an ideal Chern band. We expect our results to generalize to other twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers.

Non-local interactions in moiré Hubbard systems

Moiré materials formed in two-dimensional semiconductor heterobilayers are quantum simulators of Hubbard-like physics with unprecedented electron-density and interaction-strength tunability. Compared to atomic scale Hubbard-like systems, electrons or holes in moiré materials are less strongly attracted to their effective lattice sites because these are defined by finite-depth potential extrema. As a consequence, non-local interaction terms like interaction-assisted hopping and intersite-exchange are more relevant. We theoretically demonstrate the possibility of tuning the strength of these coupling constants to favor unusual states of matter, including spin liquids, insulating ferromagnets, and superconductors.

Magnetic ground states of honeycomb lattice Wigner crystals

Lattice Wigner crystal states stabilized by long-range Coulomb interactions have recently been realized in two-dimensional moiré materials. We employ large-scale unrestricted Hartree-Fock techniques to unveil the magnetic phase diagrams of honeycomb lattice Wigner crystals. For the three lattice filling factors with the largest charge gaps, n = 2/3, 1/2, 1/3, the magnetic phase diagrams contain multiple phases, including ones with non-collinear and non-coplanar spin arrangements. We discuss magnetization evolution with external magnetic field, which has potential as an experimental signature of exotic spin states. Our theoretical results could potentially be validated in moiré materials formed from group VI transition metal dichalcogenide twisted homobilayers.

Metal-insulator transition in transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayer moiré superlattices

Moiré superlattices formed in two-dimensional semiconductor heterobilayers provide a new realization of Hubbard model physics in which the number of electrons per effective atom can be tuned at will. We report on an exact diagonalization study of the electronic properties of half-filled narrow moiré bands in which correlation strengths are varied by changing twist angles or interaction strengths. We construct a phase diagram for the bilayer, identifying where the metal-insulator phase transition occurs, estimating the sizes of the charge gaps in the insulating phase, and commenting on the nature of the transition and the importance of sub-dominant interaction parameters.
