High-Contrast Interference of Ultracold Fermions

Many-body interference between indistinguishable particles can give rise to strong correlations rooted in quantum statistics. We study such Hanbury Brown-Twiss-type correlations for number states of ultracold massive fermions. Using deterministically prepared $^6$Li atoms in optical tweezers, we measure momentum correlations using a single-atom sensitive time-of-flight imaging scheme. The experiment combines on-demand state preparation of highly indistinguishable particles with high-fidelity detection, giving access to two- and three-body correlations in fields of fixed fermionic particle number. We find that pairs of atoms interfere with a contrast close to 80%. We show that second-order density correlations arise from contributions from all two-particle pairs and detect intrinsic third-order correlations.

Universal dynamical scaling of long-range topological superconductors

We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of $p$-wave superconducting quantum wires with long-range interactions, when the chemical potential is linearly ramped across the topological phase transition. We show that the heat produced after the quench scales with the quench rate $δ$ according to the scaling law $δ^θ$, where the exponent $θ$ depends on the power law exponent of the long-range interactions. We identify the parameter regimes where this scaling can be cast in terms of the universal equilibrium critical exponents and can thus be understood within the Kibble-Zurek framework. When the electron hopping decays more slowly in space than pairing, it dominates the equilibrium scaling. Surprisingly, in this regime the dynamical critical behaviour arises only from paring and, thus, exhibits anomalous dynamical universality unrelated to equilibrium scaling. The discrepancy from the expected Kibble-Zurek scenario can be traced back to the presence of multiple universal terms in the equilibrium scaling functions of long-range interacting systems close to a second order critical point.

Dynamical criticality and domain-wall coupling in long-range Hamiltonians

Dynamical quantum phase transitions hold a deep connection to the underlying equilibrium physics of the quench Hamiltonian. In a recent study [J.~C.~Halimeh \textit{et al.}, arXiv:1810.07187], it has been numerically demonstrated that the appearance of anomalous cusps in the Loschmidt return rate coincides with the presence of bound domain walls in the spectrum of the quench Hamiltonian. Here, we consider transverse-field Ising chains with power-law and exponentially decaying interactions, and show that by removing domain-wall coupling via a truncated Jordan-Wigner transformation onto a Kitaev chain with long-range hopping and pairing, anomalous dynamical criticality is no longer present. This indicates that bound domain walls are necessary for anomalous cusps to appear in the Loschmidt return rate. We also calculate the dynamical phase diagram of the Kitaev chain with long-range hopping and pairing, which in the case of power-law couplings is shown to exhibit rich dynamical criticality including a doubly critical dynamical phase.

Quantum scale anomaly and spatial coherence in a 2D Fermi superfluid

Quantum anomalies are violations of classical scaling symmetries caused by quantum fluctuations. Although they appear prominently in quantum field theory to regularize divergent physical quantities, their influence on experimental observables is difficult to discern. Here, we discovered a striking manifestation of a quantum anomaly in the momentum-space dynamics of a 2D Fermi superfluid of ultracold atoms. We measured the position and pair momentum distribution of the superfluid during a breathing mode cycle for different interaction strengths across the BEC-BCS crossover. Whereas the system exhibits self-similar evolution in the weakly interacting BEC and BCS limits, we found a violation in the strongly interacting regime. The signature of scale-invariance breaking is enhanced in the first-order coherence function. In particular, the power-law exponents that characterize long-range phase correlations in the system are modified due to this effect, indicating that the quantum anomaly has a significant influence on the critical properties of 2D superfluids.

Nonperturbative renormalization group treatment of amplitude fluctuations for $|φ|^4$ topological phase transitions

The study of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in two-dimensional $|φ|^4$ models can be performed in several representations, and the amplitude-phase (AP) Madelung parametrization is a natural way to study the contribution of density fluctuations to nonuniversal quantities. We introduce a functional renormalization group scheme in AP representation where amplitude fluctuations are integrated first to yield an effective sine-Gordon model with renormalized superfluid stiffness. By a mapping between the lattice XY and continuum $|φ|^4$ models, our method applies to both on equal footing. Our approach correctly reproduces the existence of a line of fixed points and of universal thermodynamics and it allows to estimate universal and nonuniversal quantities of the two models, finding good agreement with available Monte Carlo results. The presented approach is flexible enough to treat parameter ranges of experimental relevance.

Anisotropic Long-Range Spin Systems

We consider anisotropic long-range interacting spin systems in $d$ dimensions. The interaction between the spins decays with the distance as a power law with different exponents in different directions: we consider an exponent $d_{1}+σ_1$ in $d_1$ directions and another exponent $d_{2}+σ_2$ in the remaining $d_2\equiv d-d_1$ ones. We introduce a low energy effective action with non analytic power of the momenta. As a function of the two exponents $σ_1$ and $σ_2$ we show the system to have three different regimes, two where it is actually anisotropic and one where the isotropy is finally restored. We determine the phase diagram and provide estimates of the critical exponents as a function of the parameters of the system, in particular considering the case of one of the two $σ$'s fixed and the other varying. A discussion of the physical relevance of our results is also presented.
