First Principles Study of Structural, Electronic and Magnetic Interplay in Ferroelectromagnetic Yttrium Manganite

We present results of local spin density approximation pseudopotential calculations for the ferroelectromagnet, yttrium manganite (YMnO3). The origin of the differences between ferroelectric and non-ferroelectric perovskite manganites is determined by comparing the calculated properties of yttrium manganite in its ferroelectric hexagonal and non-ferroelectric orthorhombic phases. In addition, orthorhombic YMnO3 is compared with the prototypical non-ferroelectric manganite, lanthanum manganite. We show that, while the octahedral crystal field splitting of the cubic perovskite structure causes a centro-symmetric Jahn-Teller distortion around the Mn3+ ion, the markedly different splitting in hexagonal perovskites creates an electronic configuration consistent with ferroelectric distortion. We explain the nature of the distortion, and show that a local magnetic moment on the Mn3+ ion is a requirement for it to occur.

Ab-initio transport theory for digital ferromagnetic heterostructures

MnAs/GaAs superlattices, made by $δ$-doping GaAs with Mn, are known as digital ferromagnetic heterostructures. Here we present a theoretical density functional study of the electronic, magnetic and transport properties of such heterostructures. In the absence of intrinsic donors these systems show an half metallic density of states, with an exchange interaction much stronger than that of a random alloy with the same Mn concentration. {\it Ab initio} ballistic transport calculations show that the carriers with energies close to the Fermi energy are strongly confined within a few monolayers around the MnAs plane. This strong confinement is responsible for the large exchange coupling. Therefore the system can be described as a two dimensional half metal with large conductance in the MnAs plane and small conductance in the perpendicular direction.

Do As antisites destroy the ferromagnetism of (Ga,Mn)As?

The effect of the inclusion of As antisites in the diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As is studied within density functional theory in the local spin density approximation. In the case of homogeneous distribution of Mn ions we find that the ferromagnetism is largely weakened by the presence of the antisites. This is due to compensation of the free holes which mediate the long range ferromagnetic order. In contrast, when two Mn ions are coupled through only one As ion, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order compete. In this case the magnetic ground state depends on: i) the position of the As antisites relative to the Mn, and ii) the As antisite concentration. We explain our results using a model of competing antiferromagnetic super-exchange and ferromagnetic double-exchange via localized Zener carriers. The strong dependence of the ferromagnetic order on the microscopic configuration accounts for the large variation in experimental data

First principles study of the origin and nature of ferromagnetism in (Ga,Mn)As

The properties of diluted Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As are calculated for a wide range of Mn concentrations within the local spin density approximation of density functional theory. Mülliken population analyses and orbital-resolved densities of states show that the configuration of Mn in GaAs is compatible with either 3d$^5$ or 3d$^6$, however the occupation is not integer due to the large $p$-$d$ hybridization between the Mn $d$ states and the valence band of GaAs. The spin splitting of the conduction band of GaAs has a mean field-like linear variation with the Mn concentration and indicates ferromagnetic coupling with the Mn ions. In contrast the valence band is antiferromagnetically coupled with the Mn impurities and the spin splitting is not linearly dependent on the Mn concentration. This suggests that the mean field approximation breaks down in the case of Mn-doped GaAs and corrections due to multiple scattering must be considered. We calculate these corrections within a simple free electron model and find good agreement with our {\it ab initio} results if a large exchange constant ($Nβ=-4.5$eV) is assumed.

First principles study of strain/electronic interplay in ZnO; Stress and temperature dependence of the piezoelectric constants

We present a first-principles study of the relationship between stress, temperature and electronic properties in piezoelectric ZnO. Our method is a plane wave pseudopotential implementation of density functional theory and density functional linear response within the local density approximation. We observe marked changes in the piezoelectric and dielectric constants when the material is distorted. This stress dependence is the result of strong, bond length dependent, hybridization between the O $2p$ and Zn $3d$ electrons. Our results indicate that fine tuning of the piezoelectric properties for specific device applications can be achieved by control of the ZnO lattice constant, for example by epitaxial growth on an appropriate substrate.

Magnetic stress as a driving force of structural distortions: the case of CrN

We show that the observed transition from rocksalt to orthorhombic P$_{nma}$ symmetry in CrN can be understood in terms of stress anisotropy. Using local spin density functional theory, we find that the imbalance between stress stored in spin-paired and spin-unpaired Cr nearest neighbors causes the rocksalt structure to be unstable against distortions and justifies the observed antiferromagnetic ordering. This stress has a purely magnetic origin, and may be important in any system where the coupling between spin ordering and structure is strong.

Can half metallic zincblende MnAs be grown?

In this paper we investigate theoretically the ground state NiAs-type structure of MnAs and we compare the magnetic and structural properties with an hypothetical zincblende structure. A zincblende structure can be obtained, in principle, from the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As in the limit $x=1$. Using density functional calculations within the local spin-density approximation (LSDA), we show that the zincblende structure, although showing half metallic behavior which is very attractive for spintronics, can not be stabilized at equilibrium. We perform a tight-binding analysis of the Mn-As bond in the tetrahedral coordination to investigate the nature of the bonding in diluted magnetic semiconductors.

First Principles Investigation of Ferromagnetism and Ferroelectricity in Bismuth Manganite

We present results of local spin density approximation (LSDA) pseudopotential calculations for the perovskite structure oxide, bismuth manganite (BiMnO3). The origin of the differences between bismuth manganite and other perovskite manganites is determined by first calculating total energies and band structures of the high symmetry cubic phase, then sequentially lowering the magnetic and structural symmetry. Our results indicate that covalent bonding between bismuth cations and oxygen anions stabilizes different magnetic and structural phases compared with the rare earth manganites. This is consistent with recent experimental results showing enhancement of charge ordering in doped bismuth manganite.
