The surface diffusion flow with elasticity in the plane

In this paper we prove short-time existence of a smooth solution in the plane to the surface diffusion equation with an elastic term and without an additional curvature regularization. We also prove the asymptotic stability of strictly stable stationary sets.

A Remark on an Integral Characterization of the Dual of BV

In this paper, we show how under the continuum hypothesis one can obtain an integral representation for elements of the topological dual of the space of functions of bounded variation in terms of Lebesgue and Kolmogorov-Burkill integrals.

Nonlinear stability results for the modified Mullins-Sekerka and the surface diffusion flow

It is shown that any three-dimensional periodic configuration that is strictly stable for the area functional is exponentially stable for the surface diffusion flow and for the Mullins-Sekerka or Hele-Shaw flow. The same result holds for three-dimensional periodic configurations that are strictly stable with respect to the sharp-interface Ohta-Kawaski energy. In this case, they are exponentially stable for the so-called modified Mullins-Sekerka flow.

Motion of three-dimensional elastic films by anisotropic surface diffusion with curvature regularization

Short time existence for a surface diffusion evolution equation with curvature regularization is proved in the context of epitaxially strained three-dimensional films. This is achieved by implementing a minimizing movement scheme, which is hinged on the $H^{-1}$-gradient flow structure underpinning the evolution law. Long-time behavior and Liapunov stability in the case of initial data close to a flat configuration are also addressed.

On the regularity of critical and minimal sets of a free interface problem

We study a free interface problem of finding the optimal energy configuration for mixtures of two conducting materials with an additional perimeter penalization of the interface. We employ the regularity theory of linear elliptic equations to study the possible opening angles of Taylor cones and to give a different proof of a partial regularity result by Fan Hua Lin.

Minimality via second variation for a nonlocal isoperimetric problem

We discuss the local minimality of certain configurations for a nonlocal isoperimetric problem used to model microphase separation in diblock copolymer melts. We show that critical configurations with positive second variation are local minimizers of the nonlocal area functional and, in fact, satisfy a quantitative isoperimetric inequality with respect to sets that are $L^1$-close. The link with local minimizers for the diffuse-interface Ohta-Kawasaki energy is also discussed. As a byproduct of the quantitative estimate, we get new results concerning periodic local minimizers of the area functional and a proof, via second variation, of the sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequality in the standard Euclidean case. As a further application, we address the global and local minimality of certain lamellar configurations.

Non trivial behavior of the linear response function in phase ordering kinetics

Drawing from exact, approximate and numerical results an overview of the properties of the out of equilibrium response function in phase ordering kinetics is presented. Focusing on the zero field cooled magnetization, emphasis is on those features of this quantity which display non trivial behavior when relaxation proceeds by coarsening. Prominent among these is the dimensionality dependence of the scaling exponent $a_χ$ which leads to failure of the connection between static and dynamic properties at the lower dimensionality $d_L$, where $a_χ=0$. We also analyse the mean spherical model as an explicit example of a stochastic unstable system, for which the connection between statics and dynamics fails at all dimensionalities.
