Symmetric 2-rigs: coexponentiability and cartesian closure

We study coexponentiability in the context of the cocartesian 2-category RIG of symmetric 2-rigs, symmetric strong monoidal cocontinuous functors, and symmetric monoidal natural transformations. Our results characterize the coexponentiable symmetric 2-rigs as those that are deformation retracts of presheaf categories over small categories. As an application, we give an account of the cartesian closure of two full sub-2-categories of the dual of RIG arising from the theory of combinatorial species and the theory of symmetric operads.

Isoregular theories, accessible 2-categories, and free constructions

We introduce isoregular theories, in which it is possible to express existential quantification up to unique isomorphism, as typically used to characterise category-theoretic universal constructions, such as limits. We then develop a functorial semantics for isoregular theories and prove that their 2-categories of models are accessible with flexible limits. We apply these results by showing that a number of 2-categories of interest in general category theory, categorical algebra, and categorical logic are models of isoregular theories, thereby establishing that they are accessible 2-categories with flexible limits and obtaining a number of new free constructions.

A unified treatment of commuting tensor products of categories, operads, symmetric multicategories and their bimodules

We provide a unified treatment of several commuting tensor products considered in the literature, including the tensor product of enriched categories and the Boardman-Vogt tensor product of operads and symmetric multicategories, subsuming work of Elmendorf and Mandell. We then show how a commuting tensor product extends to bimodules, generalising results of Dwyer and Hess. In particular, we construct a double category of symmetric multicategories, symmetric multifunctors and bimodules and show that it admits a symmetric oplax monoidal structure. These applications are obtained as instances of a general construction of commuting tensor products on double categories of monads, monad morphisms and bimodules.

Monoidal Kleisli Bicategories and the Arithmetic Product of Coloured Symmetric Sequences

We extend the arithmetic product of species of structures and symmetric sequences studied by Maia and Mendez and by Dwyer and Hess to coloured symmetric sequences and show that it determines a normal oplax monoidal structure on the bicategory of coloured symmetric sequences. In order to do this, we establish general results on extending monoidal structures to Kleisli bicategories. Our approach uses monoidal double categories, which help us to attack the difficult problem of verifying the coherence conditions for a monoidal bicategory in an efficient way.

The effective model structure and $\infty$-groupoid objects

For a category $\mathcal E$ with finite limits and well-behaved countable coproducts, we construct a model structure, called the effective model structure, on the category of simplicial objects in $\mathcal E$, generalising the Kan--Quillen model structure on simplicial sets. We then prove that the effective model structure is left and right proper and satisfies descent in the sense of Rezk. As a consequence, we obtain that the associated $\infty$-category has finite limits, colimits satisfying descent, and is locally Cartesian closed when $\mathcal E$ is, but is not a higher topos in general. We also characterise the $\infty$-category presented by the effective model structure, showing that it is the full sub-category of presheaves on $\mathcal E$ spanned by Kan complexes in $\mathcal E$, a result that suggests a close analogy with the theory of exact completions.

The constructive Kan-Quillen model structure: two new proofs

We present two new proofs of Simon Henry's result that the category of simplicial sets admits a constructive counterpart of the classical Kan-Quillen model structure. Our proofs are entirely self-contained and avoid complex combinatorial arguments on anodyne extensions. We also give new constructive proofs of the left and right properness of the model structure.

Models of Martin-Löf type theory from algebraic weak factorisation systems

We introduce type-theoretic algebraic weak factorisation systems and show how they give rise to homotopy-theoretic models of Martin-Löf type theory. This is done by showing that the comprehension category associated to a type-theoretic algebraic weak factorisation system satisfies the assumptions necessary to apply a right adjoint method for splitting comprehension categories. We then provide methods for constructing several examples of type-theoretic algebraic weak factorisation systems, encompassing the existing groupoid model and cubical sets models, as well as some models based on normal fibrations

Towards a constructive simplicial model of Univalent Foundations

We provide a partial solution to the problem of defining a constructive version of Voevodsky's simplicial model of univalent foundations. For this, we prove constructive counterparts of the necessary results of simplicial homotopy theory, building on the constructive version of the Kan-Quillen model structure established by the second-named author. In particular, we show that dependent products along fibrations with cofibrant domains preserve fibrations, establish the weak equivalence extension property for weak equivalences between fibrations with cofibrant domain and define a univalent classifying fibration for small fibrations between bifibrant objects. These results allow us to define a comprehension category supporting identity types, $Σ$-types, $Π$-types and a univalent universe, leaving only a coherence question to be addressed.

On the formal theory of pseudomonads and pseudodistributive laws

We contribute to the formal theory of pseudomonads, i.e. the analogue for pseudomonads of the formal theory of monads. In particular, we solve a problem posed by Steve Lack by proving that, for every Gray-category K, there is a Gray-category Psm(K) of pseudomonads, pseudomonad morphisms, pseudomonad transformations and pseudomonad modifications in K. We then establish a triequivalence between Psm(K) and the Gray-category of pseudomonads introduced by Marmolejo. Finally, these results are applied to give a clear account of the coherence conditions for pseudodistributive laws. 41 pages. Comments welcome.

Relative pseudomonads, Kleisli bicategories, and substitution monoidal structures

We introduce the notion of a relative pseudomonad, which generalises the notion of a pseudomonad, and define the Kleisli bicategory associated to a relative pseudomonad. We then present an efficient method to define pseudomonas on the Kleisli bicategory of a relative pseudomonad. The results are applied to define several pseudomonads on the bicategory of profunctors in an homogeneous way, thus providing a uniform approach to the definition of bicategories that are of interest in operad theory, mathematical logic, and theoretical computer science.

The Frobenius Condition, Right Properness, and Uniform Fibrations

We develop further the theory of weak factorization systems and algebraic weak factorization systems. In particular, we give a method for constructing (algebraic) weak factorization systems whose right maps can be thought of as (uniform) fibrations and that satisfy the (functorial) Frobenius condition. As applications, we obtain a new proof that the Quillen model structure for Kan complexes is right proper, avoiding entirely the use of topological realization and minimal fibrations, and we solve an open problem in the study of Voevodsky's simplicial model of type theory, proving a constructive version of the preservation of Kan fibrations by pushforward along Kan fibrations. Our results also subsume and extend work by Coquand and others on cubical sets.

On operads, bimodules and analytic functors

We develop further the theory of operads and analytic functors. In particular, we introduce a bicategory that has operads as 0-cells, operad bimodules as 1-cells and operad bimodule maps as 2-cells, and prove that this bicategory is cartesian closed. In order to obtain this result, we extend the theory of distributors and the formal theory of monads.

Homotopy-initial algebras in type theory

We investigate inductive types in type theory, using the insights provided by homotopy type theory and univalent foundations of mathematics. We do so by introducing the new notion of a homotopy-initial algebra. This notion is defined by a purely type-theoretic contractibility condition which replaces the standard, category-theoretic universal property involving the existence and uniqueness of appropriate morphisms. Our main result characterises the types that are equivalent to W-types as homotopy-initial algebras.

Inductive types in homotopy type theory

Homotopy type theory is an interpretation of Martin-Löf's constructive type theory into abstract homotopy theory. There results a link between constructive mathematics and algebraic topology, providing topological semantics for intensional systems of type theory as well as a computational approach to algebraic topology via type theory-based proof assistants such as Coq. The present work investigates inductive types in this setting. Modified rules for inductive types, including types of well-founded trees, or W-types, are presented, and the basic homotopical semantics of such types are determined. Proofs of all results have been formally verified by the Coq proof assistant, and the proof scripts for this verification form an essential component of this research.

Double Adjunctions and Free Monads

We characterize double adjunctions in terms of presheaves and universal squares, and then apply these characterizations to free monads and Eilenberg--Moore objects in double categories. We improve upon our earlier result in "Monads in Double Categories", JPAA 215:6, pages 1174-1197, 2011, to conclude: if a double category with cofolding admits the construction of free monads in its horizontal 2-category, then it also admits the construction of free monads as a double category. We also prove that a double category admits Eilenberg--Moore objects if and only if a certain parameterized presheaf is representable. Along the way, we develop parameterized presheaves on double categories and prove a double-categorical Yoneda Lemma.

Monads in Double Categories

We extend the basic concepts of Street's formal theory of monads from the setting of 2-categories to that of double categories. In particular, we introduce the double category Mnd(C) of monads in a double category C and define what it means for a double category to admit the construction of free monads. Our main theorem shows that, under some mild conditions, a double category that is a framed bicategory admits the construction of free monads if its horizontal 2-category does. We apply this result to obtain double adjunctions which extend the adjunction between graphs and categories and the adjunction between polynomial endofunctors and polynomial monads.

Polynomial functors and polynomial monads

We study polynomial functors over locally cartesian closed categories. After setting up the basic theory, we show how polynomial functors assemble into a double category, in fact a framed bicategory. We show that the free monad on a polynomial endofunctor is polynomial. The relationship with operads and other related notions is explored.

Lawvere-Tierney sheaves in algebraic set theory

We present a solution to the problem of defining a counterpart in Algebraic Set Theory of the construction of internal sheaves in Topos Theory. Our approach is general in that we consider sheaves as determined by Lawvere-Tierney coverages, rather than by Grothendieck coverages, and assume only a weakening of the axioms for small maps originally introduced by Joyal and Moerdijk, thus subsuming the existing topos-theoretic results.
