Optimal Regularity and the Free Boundary in the Parabolic Signorini Problem

We give a comprehensive treatment of the parabolic Signorini problem based on a generalization of Almgren's monotonicity of the frequency. This includes the proof of the optimal regularity of solutions, classification of free boundary points, the regularity of the regular set and the structure of the singular set.

Li-Yau and Harnack type inequalities in $RCD^*(K,N)$ metric measure spaces

Metric measure spaces satisfying the reduced curvature-dimension condition $CD^*(K,N)$ and where the heat flow is linear are called $RCD^*(K,N)$-spaces. This class of non smooth spaces contains Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below by $K$ and dimension bounded above by $N$. We prove that in $RCD^*(K,N)$-spaces the following properties of the heat flow hold true: a Li-Yau type inequality, a Bakry-Qian inequality, the Harnack inequality.

Frequency of Harmonic functions in Carnot groups and for operators of Baouendi type

We introduce a new notion of Almgren's frequency which is adapted to solutions of a sub-Laplacian (harmonic functions) on a Carnot group of arbitrary step $\bG$. With this notion we investigate some new functionals associated with the frequency, and obtain monotonicity formulas for the relevant harmonic functions, or for the solutions of a closely connected class of degenerate second order operators of Baouendi type. The results proved in this paper provide some new insight into the deep link existing between the growth properties of the frequency, and the local and global structure of the relevant harmonic functions in these non-elliptic, or subelliptic, settings

Gradient bounds and monotonicity of the energy for some nonlinear singular diffusion equations

We construct viscosity solutions to the nonlinear evolution equation \eqref{p} below which generalizes the motion of level sets by mean curvature (the latter corresponds to the case $p = 1$) using the regularization scheme as in \cite{ES1} and \cite{SZ}. The pointwise properties of such solutions, namely the comparison principles, convergence of solutions as $p\to 1$, large-time behavior and unweighted energy monotonicity are studied. We also prove a notable monotonicity formula for the weighted energy, thus generalizing Struwe's famous monotonicity formula for the heat equation ($p =2$).

Riesz potentials and p-superharmonic functions in Lie groups of Heisenberg type

We prove a superposition principle for Riesz potentials of nonnegative continuous functions on Lie groups of Heisenberg type. More precisely, we show that the Riesz potential $$ R_α(ρ)(g) = \int_{\G} N(g^{-1} g')^{α-Q} ρ(g') dg', \qquad 0<α<Q, $$ of a nonnegative function $ρ\in C_0(\G)$ on a group $\G$ of Heisenberg type is necessarily either $p$-subharmonic or $p$-superharmonic, depending on $p$ and $α$. Here $N$ denotes the non-isotropic homogeneous norm on such groups, as introduced by Kaplan. This result extends to a wide class of nonabelian stratified Lie groups a recent remarkable superposition result of Lindqvist and Manfredi.

Boundary behavior p-harmonic functions in the Heisenberg group

We study the boundary behavior of nonnegative p-harmonic functions which vanish on a portion of the boundary of a domain in the Heisenberg group H^n. Our main results are: 1) An estimate from above which shows that, under suitable geometric assumptions on the relevant domain, such a p-harmonic function vanishes at most linearly with respect to the sub-Riemannian distance to the boundary. 2) An estimate from below which shows that for a (Euclidean) C^{1,1} domain, away from the characteristic set, such a p-harmonic function vanishes exactly like the distance to the boundary. By combining 1) and 2) we obtain a comparison theorem stating that, at least away from the characteristic set, any two such p-harmonic functions must vanish at the same rate.

Perelman's entropy and doubling property on Riemannian manifolds

The purpose of this work is to study some monotone functionals of the heat kernel on a complete Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. In particular, we show that on these manifolds, the gradient estimate of Li and Yau, the gradient estimate of Ni, the monotonicity of the Perelman's entropy and the volume doubling property are all consequences of an entropy inequality recently discovered by Baudoin-Garofalo. The latter is a linearized version of a logarithmic Sobolev inequality that is due to D. Bakry and M. Ledoux.

Generalized Bochner formulas and Ricci lower bounds for sub-Riemannian manifolds of rank two

We study a new class of rank two sub-Riemannian manifolds encompassing Riemannian manifolds, CR manifolds with vanishing Webster-Tanaka torsion, orthonormal bundles over Riemannian manifolds, and graded nilpotent Lie groups of step two. These manifolds admit a canonical horizontal connection and a canonical sub-Laplacian. We construct on these manifolds an analogue of the Riemannian Ricci tensor and prove Bochner type formulas for the sub-Laplacian. As a consequence, it is possible to formulate on these spaces a sub-Riemannian analogue of the so-called curvature dimension inequality. Sub-Riemannian manifolds for which this inequality is satisfied are shown to share many properties in common with Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is bounded from below

Stable complete embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb H^1$ with empty characteristic locus are vertical planes

In the recent paper \cite{DGNP} we have proved that the only stable $C^2$ minimal surfaces in the first Heisenberg group $\Hn$ which are graphs over some plane and have empty characteristic locus must be vertical planes. This result represents a sub-Riemannian version of the celebrated theorem of Bernstein. In this paper we extend the result in \cite{DGNP} to $C^2$ complete embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb H^1$ with empty characteristic locus. We prove that every such a surface without boundary must be a vertical plane.

Some New Monotonicity Formulas and the Singular Set in the Lower Dimensional Obstacle Problem

We construct two new one-parameter families of monotonicity formulas to study the free boundary points in the lower dimensional obstacle problem. The first one is a family of Weiss type formulas geared for points of any given homogeneity and the second one is a family of Monneau type formulas suited for the study of singular points. We show the uniqueness and continuous dependence of the blowups at singular points of given homogeneity. This allows to prove a structural theorem for the singular set. Our approach works both for zero and smooth non-zero lower dimensional obstacles. The study in the latter case is based on a generalization of Almgren's frequency formula, first established by Caffarelli, Salsa, and Silvestre.

Sharp capacitary estimates for rings in metric spaces

We establish sharp estimates for the $p$-capacity of metric rings with unrelated radii in metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincaré inequality. These estimates play an essential role in the study of the local behavior of \p-harmonic Green's functions.

Inequalities of Hardy-Sobolev type in Carnot-Carathéodory spaces

We consider various types of Hardy-Sobolev inequalities on a Carnot-Carathéodory space $(\Om, d)$ associated to a system of smooth vector fields $X=\{X_1, X_2,...,X_m\}$ on $\RR^n$ satisfying the Hörmander's finite rank condition $rank Lie[X_1,...,X_m] \equiv n$. One of our main concerns is the trace inequality \int_{\Om}|ϕ(x)|^{p}V(x)dx\leq C\int_{\Om}|Xϕ|^{p}dx,\qquad ϕ\in C^{\infty}_{0}(\Om), where $V$ is a general weight, i.e., a nonnegative locally integrable function on $\Om$, and $1<p<+\infty$. Under sharp geometric assumptions on the domain $\Om\subset \Rn$ that can be measured equivalently in terms of subelliptic capacities or Hausdorff contents, we establish various forms of Hardy-Sobolev type inequalities.

Geometric second derivative estimates in Carnot groups and convexity

We prove some new a priori estimates for H_2-convex functions which are zero on the boundary of a bounded smooth domain Ωin a Carnot group G. Such estimates are global and are geometric in nature as they involve the horizontal mean curvature \mathcal H of the boundary of Ω. As a consequence of our bounds we show that if G has step two, then for any smooth $H_2$-convex function in Ω\subset G vanishing on the boundary of Ωone has \sum_{i,j=1}^m \int_Ω([X_i,X_j]u)^2 dg \leq {4/3} \int_{\partial Ω} \mathcal H |\nabla_H u|^2 dσ_H .

Mutual Absolute Continuity of Harmonic and Surface Measures for Hormander Type Operators

In this paper, we consider the Sub-Laplacian L which consists of sum of squares of smooth vector fields that satisfy Hormander's finite rank condition. We study the Dirichlet problem for this operator on domains that satisfy certain geometric conditions. For such domains, several key results are established. These results consist of 1) A reversed Holder inequality for the Poisson kernel 2) Harmonic measure (corresponding to L) and surface measure (as well as the H-Perimeter measure) are mutually absolutely continuous 3) A representation (hence solvability of the Dirichlet problem) for solutions to the Dirichlet problem.
