Some rigidity results for Sobolev inequalities and related PDEs on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds

The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture states that, on every $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $, the isoperimetric inequality holds with Euclidean optimal constant, and any set attaining equality is necessarily isometric to a Euclidean ball. This conjecture was settled, with positive answer, for $n \le 4$. It was also shown that its validity in dimension $n$ ensures that every $p$-Sobolev inequality ($ 1 < p < n $) holds on $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Euclidean optimal constant. In this paper we address the problem of classifying all Cartan-Hadamard manifolds supporting an optimal function for the Sobolev inequality. We prove that, under the validity of the $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, the only such manifold is $ \mathbb{R}^n $, and therefore any optimizer is an Aubin-Talenti profile (up to isometries). In particular, this is the case in dimension $n \le 4$. Optimal functions for the Sobolev inequality are weak solutions to the critical $p$-Laplace equation. Thus, in the second part of the paper, we address the classification of radial solutions (not necessarily optimizers) to such a PDE. Actually, we consider the more general critical or supercritical equation \[ -Δ_p u = u^q \, , \quad u>0 \, , \qquad \text{on } \mathbb{M}^n \, , \] where $q \ge p^*-1$. We show that if there exists a radial finite-energy solution, then $\mathbb{M}^n$ is necessarily isometric to $\mathbb{R}^n$, $q=p^*-1$ and $u$ is an Aubin-Talenti profile. Furthermore, on model manifolds, we describe the asymptotic behavior of radial solutions not lying in the energy space $\dot{W}^{1,p}(\mathbb{M}^n)$, studying separately the $p$-stochastically complete and incomplete cases.

Free boundary problems with long-range interactions: uniform Lipschitz estimates in the radius

Consider the class of optimal partition problems with long range interactions \[ \inf \left\{ \sum_{i=1}^k λ_1(ω_i):\ (ω_1,\ldots, ω_k) \in \mathcal{P}_r(Ω) \right\}, \] where $λ_1(\cdot)$ denotes the first Dirichlet eigenvalue, and $\mathcal{P}_r(Ω)$ is the set of open $k$-partitions of $Ω$ whose elements are at distance at least $r$: $\textrm{dist}(ω_i,ω_j)\geq r$ for every $i\neq j$. In this paper we prove optimal uniform bounds (as $r\to 0^+$) in $\mathrm{Lip}$-norm for the associated $L^2$-normalized eigenfunctions, connecting in particular the nonlocal case $r>0$ with the local one $r \to 0^+$. The proof uses new pointwise estimates for eigenfunctions, a one-phase Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman and the Caffarelli-Jerison-Kenig monotonicity formulas, combined with elliptic and energy estimates. Our result extends to other contexts, such as singularly perturbed harmonic maps with distance constraints.

On unique continuation principles for some elliptic systems

In this paper we prove unique continuation principles for some systems of elliptic partial differential equations satisfying a suitable superlinearity condition. As an application, we obtain nonexistence of nontrivial (not necessarily positive) radial solutions for the Lane-Emden system posed in a ball, in the critical and supercritical regimes. Some of our results also apply to general fully nonlinear operators, such as Pucci's extremal operators, being new even for scalar equations.

Ground states for the NLS equation with combined nonlinearities on non-compact metric graphs

We investigate the existence of ground states with prescribed mass for the NLS energy with combined $L^2$-critical and subcritical nonlinearities, on a general non-compact metric graph $\mathcal{G}$. The interplay between the different nonlinearities creates new phenomena with respect to purely critical or subcritical problems on graphs; from a different perspective, topological and metric properties of the underlying graph drastically influence existence and non-existence of ground states with respect to the analogue problem on the real line.

Local minimizers in absence of ground states for the critical NLS energy on metric graphs

We consider the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on non-compact metric graphs. A quite complete description of the structure of the ground states, which correspond to global minimizers of the energy functional under a mass constraint, is provided by Adami, Serra and Tilli in arXiv:1605.07666, where it is proved that existence and properties of ground states depend in a crucial way on both the value of the mass, and the topological properties of the underlying graph. In this paper we address cases when ground states do not exist and show that, under suitable assumptions, constrained local minimizers of the energy do exist. This result paves the way to the existence of stable solutions in the time-dependent equation in cases where the ground state energy level is not achieved.

An anisotropic monotoncity formula, with applications to some segregation problems

We prove an Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman montonicity formula for pairs of functions solving elliptic equations driven by different ellipticity matrices in their positivity sets. As application, we derive Liouville-type theorems for subsolutions of some elliptic systems, and we analyze segregation phenomena for systems of equations where the diffusion of each density is described by a different operator.

Saddle-shaped positive solutions for elliptic systems with bistable nonlinearity

In this paper we prove the existence of infinitely many saddle-shaped positive solutions for non-cooperative nonlinear elliptic systems with bistable nonlinearities in the phase-separation regime. As an example, we prove that the system \[ \begin{cases} -Δu =u-u^3-Λuv^2 -Δv =v-v^3-Λu^2v u,v > 0 \end{cases} \qquad \text{in $\mathbb{R}^N$, with $Λ>1$,} \] has infinitely many saddle-shape solutions in dimension $2$ or higher. This is in sharp contrast with the case $Λ\in (0,1]$, for which, on the contrary, only constant solutions exist.

A fountain of positive Bubbles on a Coron's Problem for a Competitive Weakly Coupled Gradient System

We consider the following critical elliptic system: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu_i=μ_i u_i^{3}+βu_i^{ } \sum\limits_{j\neq i} u_j^{2} \quad \hbox{in}\ Ω_\varepsilon \\ u_i=0 \hbox{ on } \partialΩ_\varepsilon , \qquad u_i>0 \hbox{ in } Ω_\varepsilon \end{cases}\qquad i=1,\ldots, m, \end{equation*} in a domain $Ω_\varepsilon \subset \mathbb{R}^4$ with a small shrinking hole $B_\varepsilon(ξ_0)$. For $μ_i>0$, $β<0$, and $\varepsilon>0$ small, we prove the existence of a non-synchronized solution which looks like a fountain of positive bubbles, i.e. each component $u_i$ exhibits a towering blow-up around $ξ_0$ as $\varepsilon \to 0$. The proof is based on the Ljapunov-Schmidt reduction method, and the velocity of concentration of each layer within a given tower is chosen in such a way that the interaction between bubbles of different components balance the interaction of the first bubble of each component with the boundary of the domain, and in addition is dominant when compared with the interaction of two consecutive bubbles of the same component.

The nodal set of solutions to some elliptic problems: singular nonlinearities

This paper deals with solutions to the equation \begin{equation*} -Δu = λ_+ \left(u^+\right)^{q-1} - λ_- \left(u^-\right)^{q-1} \quad \text{in $B_1$} \end{equation*} where $λ_+,λ_- > 0$, $q \in (0,1)$, $B_1=B_1(0)$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N \ge 2$, and $u^+:= \max\{u,0\}$, $u^-:= \max\{-u,0\}$ are the positive and the negative part of $u$, respectively. We extend to this class of \emph{singular} equations the results recently obtained in \cite{SoTe2018} for \emph{sublinear and discontinuous} equations, $1\leq q<2$, namely: (a) the finiteness of the vanishing order at every point and the complete characterization of the order spectrum; (b) a weak non-degeneracy property; (c) regularity of the nodal set of any solution: the nodal set is a locally finite collection of regular codimension one manifolds up to a residual singular set having Hausdorff dimension at most $N-2$ (locally finite when $N=2$). As an intermediate step, we establish the regularity of a class of \emph{not necessarily minimal} solutions. The proofs are based on a priori bounds, monotonicity formulæ\ for a $2$-parameter family of Weiss-type functionals, blow-up arguments, and the classification of homogenous solutions.

The nodal set of solutions to some elliptic problems: sublinear equations, and unstable two-phase membrane problem

We are concerned with the nodal set of solutions to equations of the form \begin{equation*} -Δu = λ_+ \left(u^+\right)^{q-1} - λ_- \left(u^-\right)^{q-1} \quad \text{in $B_1$} \end{equation*} where $λ_+,λ_- > 0$, $q \in [1,2)$, $B_1=B_1(0)$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N \ge 2$, and $u^+:= \max\{u,0\}$, $u^-:= \max\{-u,0\}$ are the positive and the negative part of $u$, respectively. This class includes, the \emph{unstable two-phase membrane problem} ($q=1$), as well as \emph{sublinear} equations for $1<q<2$. We prove the following main results: (a) the finiteness of the vanishing order at every point and the complete characterization of the order spectrum; (b) a weak non-degeneracy property; (c) regularity of the nodal set of any solution: the nodal set is a locally finite collection of regular codimension one manifolds up to a residual singular set having Hausdorff dimension at most $N-2$ (locally finite when $N=2$); (d) a partial stratification theorem. Ultimately, the main features of the nodal set are strictly related with those of the solutions to linear (or superlinear) equations, with two remarkable differences. First of all, the admissible vanishing orders can not exceed the critical value $2/(2-q)$. At threshold, we find a multiplicity of homogeneous solutions, yielding the \emph{non-validity} of any estimate of the $(N-1)$-dimensional measure of the nodal set of a solution in terms of the vanishing order. The proofs are based on monotonicity formulæ\ for a $2$-parameter family of Weiss-type functionals, blow-up arguments, and the classification of homogenous solutions.

Multiple normalized solutions for a competing system of Schrödinger equations

We prove the existence of infinitely many solutions $λ_1, λ_2 \in \mathbb{R}$, $u,v \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$, for the nonlinear Schrödinger system \[ \begin{cases} -Δu - λ_1 u = μu^3+ βu v^2 & \text{in $\mathbb{R}^3$} -Δv- λ_2 v = μv^3 +βu^2 v & \text{in $\mathbb{R}^3$} u,v>0 & \text{in $\mathbb{R}^3$} \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} u^2 = a^2 \quad \text{and} \quad \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} v^2 = a^2, \end{cases} \] where $a,μ>0$ and $β\le -μ$ are prescribed. Our solutions satisfy $u\ne v$ so they do not come from a scalar equation.

Overdetermined problems for the fractional Laplacian in exterior and annular sets

We consider a fractional elliptic equation in an unbounded set with both Dirichlet and fractional normal derivative datum prescribed. We prove that the domain and the solution are necessarily radially symmetric. The extension of the result in bounded non-convex regions is also studied, as well as the radial symmetry of the solution when the set is a priori supposed to be rotationally symmetric.

The unique continuation property of sublinear equations

We derive the unique continuation property of a class of semi-linear elliptic equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearities. The simplest type of equations to which our results apply is given as $-Δu = |u|^{σ-1} u$ in a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, with $0 \le σ<1$. Despite the sublinear character of the nonlinear term, we prove that if a solution vanishes in an open subset of $Ω$, then it vanishes necessarily in the whole $Ω$. We then extend the result to equations with variable coefficients operators and inhomogeneous right-hand side.

A natural constraint approach to normalized solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations and systems

We prove existence of normalized solutions to \[ \begin{cases} -Δu - λ_1 u = μ_1 u^3+ βu v^2 & \text{in $\mathbb{R}^3$} -Δv- λ_2 v = μ_2 v^3 +βu^2 v & \text{in $\mathbb{R}^3$}\int_{\mathbb{R}^3} u^2 = a_1^2 \quad \text{and} \quad \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} v^2 = a_2^2 \end{cases} \] for any $μ_1,μ_2,a_1,a_2>0$ and $β<0$ prescribed. The approach is based upon the introduction of a natural constraint associated to the problem. Our method can be adapted to the scalar NLS equation with normalization constraint, and leads to alternative and simplified proofs to some results already available in the literature.

Variational problems with long-range interaction

We consider a class of variational problems for densities that repel each other at distance. Typical examples are given by the Dirichlet functional and the Rayleigh functional \[ D(\mathbf{u}) = \sum_{i=1}^k \int_Ω |\nabla u_i|^2 \quad \text{or} \quad R(\mathbf{u}) = \sum_{i=1}^k \frac{\int_Ω |\nabla u_i|^2}{\int_Ω u_i^2} \] minimized in the class of $H^1(Ω,\mathbb{R}^k)$ functions attaining some boundary conditions on $\partial Ω$, and subjected to the constraint \[ \mathrm{dist} (\{u_i > 0\}, \{u_j > 0\}) \ge 1 \qquad \forall i \neq j. \] For these problems, we investigate the optimal regularity of the solutions, prove a free-boundary condition, and derive some preliminary results characterizing the free boundary $\partial \{\sum_{i=1}^k u_i > 0\}$.

Hölder bounds and regularity of emerging free boundaries for strongly competing Schrödinger equations with nontrivial grouping

We study regularity issues for systems of elliptic equations of the type \[ -Δu_i=f_{i,β}(x)-β\sum_{j\neq i} a_{ij} u_i |u_i|^{p-1}|u_j|^{p+1} \] set in domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, for $N \geq 1$. The paper is devoted to the derivation of $\mathcal{C}^{0,α}$ estimates that are uniform in the competition parameter $β> 0$, as well as to the regularity of the limiting free-boundary problem obtained for $β\to + \infty$. The main novelty of the problem under consideration resides in the non-trivial grouping of the densities: in particular, we assume that the interaction parameters $a_{ij}$ are only non-negative, and thus may vanish for specific couples $(i,j)$. As a main consequence, in the limit $β\to +\infty$, densities do not segregate pairwise in general, but are grouped in classes which, in turn, form a mutually disjoint partition. Moreover, with respect to the literature, we consider more general forcing terms, sign-changing solutions, and an arbitrary $p>0$. In addition, we present a regularity theory of the emerging free-boundary, defined by the interface among different segregated groups. These equations are very common in the study of Bose-Einstein condensates and are of key importance for the analysis of optimal partition problems related to high order eigenvalues.

On Coron's problem for weakly coupled elliptic systems

We consider the following critical weakly coupled elliptic system \[ \begin{cases} -Δu_i = μ_i |u_i|^{2^*-2}u_i + \sum_{j \neq i} β_{ij} |u_j|^{\frac{2^*}{2}} |u_i|^{\frac{2^*-4}{2}} u_i & \text{in $Ω_\varepsilon$} u_i >0 & \text{in $Ω_\varepsilon$} u_i = 0 & \text{on $\partial Ω_\varepsilon$},\end{cases} \qquad i =1,\dots,m, \] in a domain $Ω_\varepsilon \subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N=3,4$, with small shrinking holes as the parameter $\varepsilon \to 0$. We prove the existence of positive solutions of two different types: either each density concentrates around a different hole, or we have groups of components such that all the components within a single group concentrate around the same point, and different groups concentrate around different points.
