Existence analysis of a degenerate diffusion system for heat-conducting fluids

The existence of global weak solutions to a parabolic energy-transport system in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is proved. The model can be derived in the diffusion limit from a kinetic equation with a linear collision operator involving a non-isothermal Maxwellian. The evolution of the local temperature is governed by a heat equation with a source term that depends on the energy of the distribution function. The limiting model consists of cross-diffusion equations with an entropy structure. The main difficulty is the nonstandard degeneracy, i.e., ellipticity is lost when the fluid density or temperature vanishes. The existence proof is based on a priori estimates coming from the entropy inequality and the $H^{-1}$ method and on techniques from mathematical fluid dynamics (renormalized formulation, div-curl lemma).

Global existence for a two-phase flow model with cross diffusion

In this work we study a degenerate pseudo-parabolic system with cross diffusion describing the evolution of the densities of an unsaturated two-phase flow mixture with dynamic capillary pressure in porous medium with saturation-dependent relaxation parameter and hypocoercive diffusion operator modeling cross diffusion. The equations are derived in a thermodynamically correct way from mass conservation laws. Global-in-time existence of weak solutions to the system in a bounded domain with equilibrium boundary conditions is shown. The main tools of the analysis are an entropy inequality and a crucial apriori bound which allows for controlling the degeneracy.

Quantum electronic trasport in graphene: a kinetic and fluid-dynamic approach

We derive a fluid-dynamic model for electron transport near a Dirac point in graphene. The derivation is based on the minimum entropy principle, which is exploited in order to close fluid-dynamic equations for quantum mixed states. To this aim we make two main approximations: the usual semiclassical approximation ($\hbar \ll 1$) and a new one, namely the `strongly-mixed state' approximation. Particular solutions of the fluid-dynamic equations are discussed which are of physical interest.

Some fluid-dynamic models for quantum electron transport in graphene via entropy minimization

We derive some fluid-dynamic models for electron transport near a Dirac point in graphene. We start from a kinetic model constituted by a set of spinorial Wigner equations, we make suitable scalings (hydrodynamic or diffusive) of the model and we build moment equations, which we close through a minimum entropy principle. In order to do this we make some assumptions: the usual semiclassical approximation ($\hbar\ll 1$), and two further hypothesis, namely Low Scaled Fermi Speed (LSFS) and Strongly Mixed State (SMS), which allow us to explicitly compute the closure.

Two spinorial drift-diffusion models for quantum electron transport in graphene

Two drift-diffusion models for the quantum transport of electrons in graphene, which account for the spin degree of freedom, are derived from a spinorial Wigner equation with relaxation-time or mass- and spin-conserving matrix collision operators using a Chapman-Enskog expansion around the thermal equilibrium. Explicit models are computed by assuming that both the semiclassical parameter and the scaled Fermi energy are sufficiently small. For one of the models, the global existence of weak solutions, entropy-dissipation properties, and the exponential long-time decay of the spin vector are proved. Finally, numerical simulations of a one-dimensional ballistic diode using both models are presented, showing the temporal behavior of the particle density and the components of the spin vector.

Longtime behavior and weak-strong uniqueness for a nonlocal porous media equation

In this manuscript we consider a non-local porous medium equation with non-local diffusion effects given by a fractional heat operator \begin{equation*} \partial_t u = \mbox{div}(u\nabla p),\qquad \partial_t p = -(-Δ)^s p + u^2, \end{equation*} in three space dimensions for $3/4\le s < 1$ and analyze the long time asymptotics. The proof is based on energy methods and leads to algebraic decay towards the stationary solution $u=0$ and $\nabla p=0$ in the $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$-norm. The decay rate depends on the exponent $s$. We also show weak-strong uniqueness of solutions and continuous dependence from the initial data. As a side product of our analysis we also show that existence of weak solutions, previously shown in [Caffarelli, Gualdani, Zamponi 2018] for $3/4\le s \le 1$, holds for $1/2 < s\le 1$ if we consider our problem in the torus.

Global martingale solutions for a stochastic population cross-diffusion system

The existence of global nonnegative martingale solutions to a stochastic cross-diffusion system for an arbitrary but finite number of interacting population species is shown. The random influence of the environment is modeled by a multiplicative noise term. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive definite, but it possesses a quadratic entropy structure. This structure allows us to work in a Hilbert space framework and to apply a stochastic Galerkin method. The existence proof is based on energy-type estimates, the tightness criterion of Brzeźniak and co-workers, and Jakubowski's generalization of the Skorokhod theorem. The nonnegativity is proved by an extension of Stampacchia's truncation method due to Chekroun, Park, and Temam.

Analysis of a degenerate and singular volume-filling cross-diffusion system modeling biofilm growth

We analyze the mathematical properties of a multi-species biofilm cross-diffusion model together with very general reaction terms and mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions on a bounded domain. This model belongs to the class of volume-filling type cross-diffusion systems which exhibit a porous medium-type degeneracy when the total biomass vanishes as well as a superdiffusion-type singularity when the biomass reaches its maximum cell capacity, which make the analysis extremely challenging. The equations also admit a very interesting non-standard entropy structure. We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions, study the asymptotic behavior and the uniqueness of the solutions, and complement the analysis by numerical simulations that illustrate the theoretically obtained results.

Global existence of weak even solutions for an isotropic Landau equation with Coulomb potential

In this manuscript we consider an isotropic modification for the Landau equation with Coulomb potential in three space dimensions. Global in time existence of weak solutions for even initial data is shown by employing a time semi-discretization of the equation, an entropy inequality and a uniform estimate for the second moment of the solution to the discretized problem. Moreover, under an additional condition that has to be satisfied uniformly over time, uniform boundedness of the solution is proved, with bounds depending solely on the mass, second moment and entropy of the solution. A byproduct of our analysis is a proof of improved regularity for weak solutions to the Landau equation with Coulomb potential.

A review for an isotropic Landau model

We consider the equation $u_t = \mbox{Div}(a[u]\nabla u - u\nabla a[u])$, $-Δa = u$. This model has attracted some attention in the recents years and several results are available in the literature. We review recent results on existence and smoothness of solutions and explain the open problems.

Spectral gap and exponential convergence to equilibrium for a multi-species Landau system

In this paper we prove new constructive coercivity estimates and convergence to equilibrium for a spatially non-homogeneous system of Landau equations with soft potentials. We show that the nonlinear collision operator conserves each species' mass, total momentum, total energy and that the Boltzmann entropy is nonincreasing along solutions of the system. The entropy decay vanishes if and only if the Boltzmann distributions of the single species are Maxwellians with the same momentum and energy. A linearization of the collision operator is computed, which has the same conservation properties as its nonlinear counterpart. We show that the linearized system dissipates a quadratic entropy, and prove existence of spectral gap and exponential decay of the solution towards the global equilibrium.

Existence analysis for incompressible fluid model of electrically charged chemically reacting and heat conducting mixtures

We deal with a three dimensional model based on the use of barycentric velocity that describes unsteady flows of a heat conducting electrically charged multicomponent chemically reacting non-Newtonian fluid. We show that under certain assumptions on data and the constitutive relations for such a fluid there exists a global in time and large data weak solution. The paper has two key novelties. The first one is that we present a model that is thermodynamically and mechanically consistent and that is able to describe the cross effects in a generality never considered before, i.e., we cover the so-called Soret effect, Dufour effect, Ohm law, Peltier effect, Joul heating, Thompson effect, Seebeck effect and also the generalized Fick law. The second key novelty is that contrary to the previous works on the similar topic, we do not need to deal with the energy equality method and therefore we are able to cover a large range of power-law parameters in the Cauchy-stress. In particular, we cover even the Newtonian case (which is the most used model), for which the existence analysis was missing.

Existence analysis of a single-phase flow mixture model with van der Waals pressure

The transport of single-phase fluid mixtures in porous media is described by cross-diffusion equations for the mass densities. The equations are obtained in a thermodynamic consistent way from mass balance, Darcy's law, and the van der Waals equation of state for mixtures. The model consists of parabolic equations with cross diffusion with a hypocoercive diffusion operator. The global-in-time existence of weak solutions in a bounded domain with equilibrium boundary conditions is proved, extending the boundedness-by-entropy method. Based on the free energy inequality, the large-time convergence of the solution to the constant equilibrium mass density is shown. For the two-species model and specific diffusion matrices, an integral inequality is proved, which reveals a minimum principle for the mass fractions. Without mass diffusion, the two-dimensional pressure is shown to converge exponentially fast to a constant. Numerical examples in one space dimension illustrate this convergence.

A cross-diffusion system derived from a Fokker-Planck equation with partial averaging

A cross-diffusion system for two compoments with a Laplacian structure is analyzed on the multi-dimensional torus. This system, which was recently suggested by P.-L. Lions, is formally derived from a Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density associated to a multi-dimensional Itō process, assuming that the diffusion coefficients depend on partial averages of the probability density with exponential weights. A main feature is that the diffusion matrix of the limiting cross-diffusion system is generally neither symmetric nor positive definite, but its structure allows for the use of entropy methods. The global-in-time existence of positive weak solutions is proved and, under a simplifying assumption, the large-time asymptotics is investigated.

Energy-transport models for spin transport in ferromagnetic semiconductors

Explicit energy-transport equations for the spinorial carrier transport in ferromagnetic semiconductors are calculated from a general spin energy-transport system that was derived by Ben Abdallah and El Hajj from a spinorial Boltzmann equation. The novelty of our approach are the simplifying assumptions leading to explicit models which extend both spin drift-diffusion and semiclassical energy-transport equations. The explicit models allow us to examine the interplay between the spin and charge degrees of freedom. In particular, the monotonicity of the entropy (or free energy) and gradient estimates are shown for these models and the existence of weak solutions to a time-discrete version of one of the models is proved, using novel truncation arguments. Numerical experiments in one-dimensional multilayer structures using a finite-volume discretization illustrate the effect of the temperature and the polarization parameter.

Qualitative behavior of solutions to cross-diffusion systems from population dynamics

A general class of cross-diffusion systems for two population species in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions and Lotka-Volterra-type source terms is analyzed. Although the diffusion coefficients are assumed to depend linearly on the population densities, the equations are strongly coupled. Generally, the diffusion matrix is neither symmetric nor positive definite. Three main results are proved: the existence of global uniformly bounded weak solutions, their convergence to the constant steady state in the weak competition case, and the uniqueness of weak solutions. The results hold under appropriate conditions on the diffusion parameters which are made explicit and which contain simplified Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto population models as a special case. The proofs are based on entropy methods, which rely on convexity properties of suitable Lyapunov functionals.

Hypocoercivity for a linearized multi-species Boltzmann system

A new coercivity estimate on the spectral gap of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator for multiple species is proved. The assumptions on the collision kernels include hard and Maxwellian potentials under Grad's angular cut-off condition. Two proofs are given: a non-constructive one, based on the decomposition of the collision operator into a compact and a coercive part, and a constructive one, which exploits the "cross-effects" coming from collisions between different species and which yields explicit constants. Furthermore, the essential spectra of the linearized collision operator and the linearized Boltzmann operator are calculated. Based on the spectral-gap estimate, the exponential convergence towards global equilibrium with explicit rate is shown for solutions to the linearized multi-species Boltzmann system on the torus. The convergence is achieved by the interplay between the dissipative collision operator and the conservative transport operator and is proved by using the hypocoercivity method of Mouhot and Neumann.

Analysis of a coupled spin drift-diffusion Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz system

The existence of global weak solutions to a coupled spin drift-diffusion and Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz system is proved. The equations are considered in a two-dimensional magnetic layer structure and are supplemented with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. The spin drift-diffusion model for the charge density and spin density vector is the diffusion limit of a spinorial Boltzmann equation for a vanishing spin polarization constant. The Maxwell-Landau-Lifshitz system consists of the time-dependent Maxwell equations for the electric and magnetic fields and of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the local magnetization, involving the interaction between magnetization and spin density vector. The existence proof is based on a regularization procedure, $L^2$-type estimates, and Moser-type iterations which yield the boundedness of the charge and spin densities. Furthermore, the free energy is shown to be nonincreasing in time if the magnetization-spin interaction constant in the Landau-Lifshitz equation is sufficiently small.
