Reinterpretation and preservation of data and analyses in HEP

Data from particle physics experiments are unique and are often the result of a very large investment of resources. Given the potential scientific impact of these data, which goes far beyond the immediate priorities of the experimental collaborations that obtain them, it is imperative that the collaborations and the wider particle physics community publish and preserve sufficient information to ensure that this impact can be realised, now and into the future. The information to be published and preserved includes the algorithms, statistical information, simulations and the recorded data. This publication and preservation requires significant resources, and should be a strategic priority with commensurate planning and resource allocation from the earliest stages of future facilities and experiments.

Uncertainty components in profile likelihood fits

When a measurement of a physical quantity is reported, the total uncertainty is usually decomposed into statistical and systematic uncertainties. This decomposition is not only useful to understand the contributions to the total uncertainty, but also required to propagate these contributions in subsequent analyses, such as combinations or interpretation fits including results from other measurements or experiments. In profile-likelihood fits, widely applied in high-energy physics analyses, contributions of systematic uncertainties are routinely quantified using "impacts", which are not adequate for such applications. We discuss the difference between impacts and actual uncertainty components, and establish methods to determine the latter in a wide range of statistical models.

Simplified likelihoods using linearized systematic uncertainties

This paper presents a simplified likelihood framework designed to facilitate the reuse, reinterpretation and combination of LHC experimental results. The framework is based on the same underlying structure as the widely used HistFactory format, but with systematic uncertainties considered at linear order only. This simplification leads to large gains in computing performance for the evaluation and maximization of the likelihood function, compared to the original statistical model. The framework accurately describes non-Gaussian effects from low event counts, as well as correlated uncertainties in combinations. While primarily targeted towards binned descriptions of the data, it is also applicable to unbinned models.

Truncation, validity, uncertainties

The truncation of the standard-model effective field theory, its validity and the associated uncertainties have been discussed in meetings of the LHC EFT WG. Proposals were made by participants to address these issues. No consensus was reached and no formal recommendation is therefore put forward at this time. None of the proposals has been approved or validated and further work is needed to establish a prescription. This note aims at summarizing the proposals and points of debate.

Simplified Template Cross Sections -- Stage 1.1 and 1.2

Simplified Template Cross Sections (STXS) have been adopted by the LHC experiments as a common framework for Higgs measurements. Their purpose is to reduce the theoretical uncertainties that are directly folded into the measurements as much as possible, while at the same time allowing for the combination of the measurements between different decay channels as well as between experiments. We report the complete, revised definition of the STXS kinematic bins (stage 1.1 and stage 1.2), which have been used for the measurements by the ATLAS and CMS experiments using the full LHC Run 2 datasets. The main focus is on the four dominant Higgs production processes, namely gluon-fusion, vector-boson fusion, production in association with a vector boson and in association with a $t\bar t$ pair. We also comment briefly on the treatment of other production modes.

Studies of e+e- Collisions with a Hard Initial-State Photon at BaBar

We present preliminary BaBar measurements of hadronic cross sections in $e^+e^-$ annihilation using the radiative return technique. The cross sections for $e^+e^- \to p\bar{p} $, $ 3(π^+π^-)$, $ 2(π^+π^-)2π^0$, and $ K^+K^-2(π^+π^-)$ are measured. Measurements of the proton form factor and of the ratio $G_E/G_M$ are also shown.

Prospects for R Measurement at BaBar using Radiative Return

A precise measurement of the ratio of hadron to muon production in e^+e^- collisions, denoted by R(s), is a necessary input for the interpretation of current precision electroweak measurements. We describe a method for measuring R(s) with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B-factory using initial-state radiation events.
