Sequential suppression of quarkonia and high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions

According to the usual application of the sequential-suppression picture to the dynamics of heavy quarkonia in the hot medium formed in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions, quark-antiquark pairs created in a given bound or unbound state remain in that same state as the medium evolves. We argue that this scenario implicitly assumes an adiabatic evolution of the quarkonia, and we show that the validity of the adiabaticity assumption is questionable.

Heavy quarkonia in a medium as a quantum dissipative system: Master-equation approach

The problem of the evolution of a heavy quarkonium in a medium can be recast as that of a quantum dissipative system. Within the framework of the master-equation approach to open quantum systems, we consider the real-time dynamics of quarkonia. We find that in a plasma at fixed temperature, the populations of the various quarkonium states evolve together, while their momentum distribution satisfies a Fokker-Planck equation.

Anisotropic flow far from equilibrium

We compute analytically the anisotropic flow in an expanding mixture of several species of relativistic massive particles. We find that a single collision per particle in average already leads to sizable elliptic flow, with mass ordering between the species.

Dynamical evolution of heavy quarkonia in a deconfined medium

We investigate some consequences of the possibility that heavy quarkonia in a quark-gluon plasma possess different (quasi-) bound states, between which transitions are possible. In particular, we show that the time-evolution eigenstates in the medium are mixtures of the vacuum eigenstates. This leads to abundance ratios of quarkonia that differ from those predicted in statistical models or in the sequential-melting picture.

Medium-induced broadening and softening of a parton shower

The modifications of the angular and transverse momentum distributions of quarks and gluons inside a parton shower due to the presence of a medium are studied within an analytical description that reduces to the modified leading logarithmic approximation (MLLA) of QCD in the absence of medium.

"Jets" and their distortion in heavy-ion collisions

After a discussion on the meaning of "jets" in the context of nucleus-nucleus collisions, the distortions of the profile of a parton shower induced by the presence of a medium is investigated in a QCD-inspired model that implements the conservation of energy at each step of the shower evolution.

Predictions for the LHC heavy ion programme

Apparently universal trends have been observed in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions up to RHIC energies. Here, we review these trends and we discuss their agnostic extrapolation to heavy ion collisions at the LHC.

Are there monojets in high-energy proton-nucleus collisions?

We study high-energy proton-nucleus collisions within the Colour Glass Condensate framework, and compute the probabilities of having a definite number of scatterings in the nucleus with a momentum transfer larger than a given cut. Various properties of the distribution in the number of multiple scatterings are investigated, and we conclude that events with monojets are very unlikely, except for extreme values of the saturation scale Qs.

Distribution of multiple scatterings in proton-nucleus collisions at high energy

We consider proton-nucleus collisions at high energy in the Color Glass Condensate framework, and extract from the gluon production cross-section the probabilities of having a definite number of multiple scatterings in the nucleus. Various properties of the distribution of the number of multiple scatterings are studied, and we conclude that events in which the momentum of a hard jet is compensated by many much softer particles on the opposite side are very unlikely except for extreme values of the saturation momentum. In the same framework, we also investigate the possibility to estimate the impact parameter of a proton-nucleus collision, from the measure of the multiplicity of its final state.

Multiplicity distributions inside parton cascades developing in a medium

The explanation of the suppression of high-pT hadron yields at RHIC in terms of jet-quenching implies that the multiplicity distributions of particles inside a jet and jet-like particle correlations differ strongly in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC or at the LHC from those observed at e+e- or hadron colliders. We present a framework for describing the medium-induced modification, which has a direct interpretation in terms of a probabilistic medium-modified parton cascade, and which treats leading and subleading partons on an equal footing. We show that our approach can account for the strong suppression of single inclusive hadron spectra measured in Au-Au collisions at RHIC, and that this implies a characteristic distortion of the single inclusive distribution of soft partons inside the jet. We determine, as a function of the jet energy, to what extent the soft fragments within a jet can be measured above some momentum cut.

Hints of incomplete thermalization in RHIC data

The large elliptic flow observed in Au-Au collisions at RHIC is often put forward as a compelling evidence for the formation of a strongly-interacting quark-gluon plasma. The main argument is that the measured elliptic flow is as large as the value given by fluid-dynamics models that assume complete thermalization. It is argued that this claim may not be justified, since a detailed examination of experimental data rather suggests that the system created is not fully equilibrated at the time when anisotropic flow develops.

Multiplicity distributions for jet parton showers in a medium

The "jet-quenching" interpretation of suppressed high-pT hadron production at RHIC implies that jet multiplicity distributions and jet-like particle correlations in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC differ strongly from those seen at e+e- or pp colliders. Here, we present an approach for describing the changes induced by the medium, which implements jet quenching as a probabilistic medium-modified parton shower, treating leading and subleading parton splittings on an equal footing. We show that the strong suppression of single inclusive hadron spectra measured in Au-Au collisions at RHIC implies a characteristic distortion of the single inclusive distribution of soft partons inside the jet. We determine, as a function of jet energy, to what extent the soft jet fragments can be measured above some momentum cut.

Distorting the Hump-backed Plateau of Jets with Dense QCD Matter

The hump-backed plateau of the single inclusive distribution of hadrons inside a jet provides a standard test of the interplay between probabilistic parton splitting and quantum coherence in QCD. The medium-induced modification of this QCD radiation physics is expected to give access to the properties of the dense medium produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Here, we introduce a formulation of medium-induced parton energy loss, which treats all leading and subleading parton branchings equally, and which - for showering in the vacuum - accounts for the observed distribution of soft jet fragments. We show that the strong suppression of single inclusive hadron spectra measured in Au-Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) implies a characteristic distortion of the hump-backed plateau; we determine, as a function of jet energy, to what extent the soft jet fragments can be measured above some momentum cut. Our study further indicates that the approximate pT-independence of the measured nuclear modification factor does not exclude a significant Q^2-dependence of parton energy loss.

Characterization and analysis of azimuthally sensitive correlations

A unified framework for describing the azimuthal dependence of two-particle correlations in heavy-ion collisions is introduced, together with the methods for measuring the corresponding observables. The generalization to azimuthal correlations between more than two particles is presented.
