Non-linear parent action and dual gravity

We give a reformulation of non-linear Einstein gravity, which contains the dual graviton together with the ordinary metric and a shift gauge field. The metric does not enter through a `kinetic' Einstein-Hilbert term, but via topological couplings, and so the theory does not lead to a doubling of degrees of freedom. The field equations take the form of first-order duality relations. We analyze the gauge symmetries and comment on their meaning with regard to the E11 proposal.

How higher-spin gravity surpasses the spin two barrier: no-go theorems versus yes-go examples

Aiming at non-experts, we explain the key mechanisms of higher-spin extensions of ordinary gravity. We first overview various no-go theorems for low-energy scattering of massless particles in flat spacetime. In doing so we dress a dictionary between the S-matrix and the Lagrangian approaches, exhibiting their relative advantages and weaknesses, after which we high-light potential loop-holes for non-trivial massless dynamics. We then review positive yes-go results for non-abelian cubic higher-derivative vertices in constantly curved backgrounds. Finally we outline how higher-spin symmetry can be reconciled with the equivalence principle in the presence of a cosmological constant leading to the Fradkin--Vasiliev vertices and Vasiliev's higher-spin gravity with its double perturbative expansion (in terms of numbers of fields and derivatives).

Higher-spin algebras and cubic interactions for simple mixed-symmetry fields in AdS spacetime

Nonabelian Fradkin-Vasiliev cubic interactions for dual-graviton-like gauge fields with gravity and themselves are constructed in anti-de Sitter spacetime. The Young diagrams of gauge potentials have shapes of 'tall-hooks', i.e. two columns the second of height one. The underlying nonabelian algebra is a Clifford algebra with the anti-de Sitter signature. We also discuss the universal enveloping realization of higher-spin algebras, showing that there is a one-parameter family of algebras compatible with unitarity, which is reminiscent of 3d deformed oscillators.

Gravitational cubic interactions for a simple mixed-symmetry gauge field in AdS and flat backgrounds

Cubic interactions between the simplest mixed-symmetry gauge field and gravity are constructed in anti-de Sitter (AdS) and flat backgrounds. Nonabelian cubic interactions are obtained in AdS following various perturbative methods including the Fradkin-Vasiliev construction, with and without Stueckelberg fields. The action that features the maximal number of Stueckelberg fields can be considered in the flat limit without loss of physical degrees of freedom. The resulting interactions in flat space are compared with a classification of vertices obtained via the antifield cohomological perturbative method. It is shown that the gauge algebra becomes abelian in the flat limit, in contrast to what happens for totally symmetric gauge fields in AdS.

An action principle for Vasiliev's four-dimensional higher-spin gravity

We provide Vasiliev's fully nonlinear equations of motion for bosonic gauge fields in four spacetime dimensions with an action principle. We first extend Vasiliev's original system with differential forms in degrees higher than one. We then derive the resulting duality-extended equations of motion from a variational principle based on a generalized Hamiltonian sigma-model action. The generalized Hamiltonian contains two types of interaction freedoms: One set of functions that appears in the Q-structure of the generalized curvatures of the odd forms in the duality-extended system; and another set depending on the Lagrange multipliers, encoding a generalized Poisson structure, i.e. a set of polyvector fields of ranks two or higher in target space. We find that at least one of the two sets of interaction-freedom functions must be linear in order to ensure gauge invariance. We discuss consistent truncations to the minimal Type A and B models (with only even spins), spectral flows on-shell and provide boundary conditions on fields and gauge parameters that are compatible with the variational principle and that make the duality-extended system equivalent, on shell, to Vasiliev's original system.

Strong obstruction of the Berends-Burgers-van Dam spin-3 vertex

In the eighties, Berends, Burgers and van Dam (BBvD) found a nonabelian cubic vertex for self-interacting massless fields of spin three in flat spacetime. However, they also found that this deformation is inconsistent at higher order for any multiplet of spin-three fields. For arbitrary symmetric gauge fields, we severely constrain the possible nonabelian deformations of the gauge algebra and, using these results, prove that the BBvD obstruction cannot be cured by any means, even by introducing fields of spin higher (or lower) than three.

Unfolding Mixed-Symmetry Fields in AdS and the BMV Conjecture: II. Oscillator Realization

Following the general formalism presented in arXiv:0812.3615 -- referred to as Paper I -- we derive the unfolded equations of motion for tensor fields of arbitrary shape and mass in constantly curved backgrounds by radial reduction of Skvortsov's equations in one higher dimension. The complete unfolded system is embedded into a single master field, valued in a tensorial Schur module realized equivalently via either bosonic (symmetric basis) or fermionic (anti-symmetric basis) vector oscillators. At critical masses the reduced Weyl zero-form modules become indecomposable. We explicitly project the latter onto the submodules carrying Metsaev's massless representations. The remainder of the reduced system contains a set of Stueckelberg fields and dynamical potentials that leads to a smooth flat limit in accordance with the Brink--Metsaev--Vasiliev (BMV) conjecture. In the unitary massless cases in AdS, we identify the Alkalaev--Shaynkman--Vasiliev frame-like potentials and explicitly disentangle their unfolded field equations.

Unfolding Mixed-Symmetry Fields in AdS and the BMV Conjecture: I. General Formalism

We present some generalities of unfolded on-shell dynamics that are useful in analysing the BMV conjecture for mixed-symmetry fields in constantly curved backgrounds. In particular we classify the Lorentz-covariant Harish-Chandra modules generated from primary Weyl tensors of arbitrary mass and shape, and in backgrounds with general values of the cosmological constant. We also discuss the unfolded notion of local degrees of freedom in theories with and without gravity and with and without massive deformation parameters, using the language of Weyl zero-form modules and their duals.

On The Uniqueness of Minimal Coupling in Higher-Spin Gauge Theory

We address the uniqueness of the minimal couplings between higher-spin fields and gravity. These couplings are cubic vertices built from gauge non-invariant connections that induce non-abelian deformations of the gauge algebra. We show that Fradkin-Vasiliev's cubic 2-s-s vertex, which contains up to 2s-2 derivatives dressed by a cosmological constant $Λ$, has a limit where: {(i)} $Λ\to 0$; {(ii)} the spin-2 Weyl tensor scales {\emph{non-uniformly}} with s; and {(iii)} all lower-derivative couplings are scaled away. For s=3 the limit yields the unique non-abelian spin 2-3-3 vertex found recently by two of the authors, thereby proving the \emph{uniqueness} of the corresponding FV vertex. We extend the analysis to s=4 and a class of spin 1-s-s vertices. The non-universality of the flat limit high-lightens not only the problematic aspects of higher-spin interactions with $Λ=0$ but also the strongly coupled nature of the derivative expansion of the fully nonlinear higher-spin field equations with $Ł\neq 0$, wherein the standard minimal couplings mediated via the Lorentz connection are \emph{subleading} at energy scales $\sqrt{|Λ|}<< E<< M_{\rm p}$. Finally, combining our results with those obtained by Metsaev, we give the complete list of \emph{all} the manifestly covariant cubic couplings of the form 1-s-s and 2-s-s, in Minkowski background.

Algebraic Classification of Weyl Anomalies in Arbitrary Dimensions

Conformally invariant massless field systems involving only dimensionless parameters are known to describe particle physics at very high energy. In the presence of an external gravitational field, the conformal symmetry may generalize to Weyl invariance. However, the latter symmetry no longer survives after quantization: A Weyl anomaly appears. In this Letter, a purely algebraic understanding of the universal structure of the Weyl anomalies is presented. The results hold in arbitrary dimensions and independently of any regularization scheme.

General solutions of the Wess-Zumino consistency condition for the Weyl anomalies

The general solutions of the Wess-Zumino consistency condition for the conformal (or Weyl, or trace) anomalies are derived. The solutions are obtained, in arbitrary dimensions, by explicitly computing the cohomology of the corresponding Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin differential in the space of integrated local functions at ghost number unity. This provides a purely algebraic, regularization-independent classification of the Weyl anomalies in arbitrary dimensions. The so-called type-A anomaly is shown to satisfy a non-trivial descent of equations, similarly to the non-Abelian chiral anomaly in Yang-Mills theory.

Consistent couplings between spin-2 and spin-3 massless fields

We solve the problem of constructing consistent first-order cross-interactions between spin-2 and spin-3 massless fields in flat spacetime of arbitrary dimension n > 3 and in such a way that the deformed gauge algebra is non-Abelian. No assumptions are made on the number of derivatives involved in the Lagrangian, except that it should be finite. Together with locality, we also impose manifest Poincare invariance, parity invariance and analyticity of the deformations in the coupling constants.

Tensor gauge fields in arbitrary representations of GL(D,R): II. Quadratic actions

Quadratic, second-order, non-local actions for tensor gauge fields transforming in arbitrary irreducible representations of the general linear group in D-dimensional Minkowski space are explicitly written in a compact form by making use of Levi-Civita tensors. The field equations derived from these actions ensure the propagation of the correct massless physical degrees of freedom and are shown to be equivalent to non-Lagrangian local field equations proposed previously. Moreover, these actions allow a frame-like reformulation a la MacDowell-Mansouri, without any trace constraint in the tangent indices.

Linear connections with propagating spin-3 field in gravity

We show that Fronsdal's Lagrangian for a free massless spin-3 gauge field in Minkowski spacetime is contained in a general Yang--Mills-like Lagrangian of metric-affine gravity (MAG), the gauge theory of the general affine group in the presence of a metric. Due to the geometric character of MAG, this can best be seen by using Vasiliev's frame formalism for higher-spin gauge fields in which the spin-3 frame is identified with the tracefree nonmetricity one-form associated with the shear generators of GL(n,R). Furthermore, for specific gravitational gauge models in the framework of full nonlinear MAG, exact solutions are constructed, featuring propagating massless and massive spin-3 fields.

On bound states of Dirac particles in gravitational fields

We investigate the quantum motion of a neutral Dirac particle bouncing on a mirror in curved spacetime. We consider different geometries: Rindler, Kasner-Taub and Schwarzschild, and show how to solve the Dirac equation by using geometrical methods. We discuss, in a first-quantized framework, the implementation of appropriate boundary conditions. This leads us to consider a Robin boundary condition that gives the quantization of the energy, the existence of bound states and of critical heights at which the Dirac particle bounces, extending the well-known results established from the Schrodinger equation. We also allow for a nonminimal coupling to a weak magnetic field. The problem is solved in an analytical way on the Rindler spacetime. In the other cases, we compute the energy spectrum up to the first relativistic corrections, exhibiting the contributions brought by both the geometry and the spin. These calculations are done in two different ways. On the one hand, using a relativistic expansion and, on the other hand, with Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations. Contrary to what is sometimes claimed in the literature, both methods are in agreement, as expected. Finally, we make contact with the GRANIT experiment. Relativistic effects and effects that go beyond the equivalence principle escape the sensitivity of such an experiment. However, we show that the influence of a weak magnetic field could lead to observable phenomena.

A Higgs Mechanism for Gravity. Part II: Higher Spin Connections

We continue the work of hep-th/0503024 in which gravity is considered as the Goldstone realization of a spontaneously broken diffeomorphism group. We complete the discussion of the coset space Diff(d,R)/SO(1,d-1) formed by the d-dimensional group of analytic diffeomorphisms and the Lorentz group. We find that this coset space is parameterized by coordinates, a metric and an infinite tower of higher-spin-like or generalized connections. We then study effective actions for the corresponding symmetry breaking which gives mass to the higher spin connections. Our model predicts that gravity is modified at high energies by the exchange of massive higher spin particles.

Spin three gauge theory revisited

We study the problem of consistent interactions for spin-3 gauge fields in flat spacetime of arbitrary dimension n>3. Under the sole assumptions of Poincaré and parity invariance, local and perturbative deformation of the free theory, we determine all nontrivial consistent deformations of the abelian gauge algebra and classify the corresponding deformations of the quadratic action, at first order in the deformation parameter. We prove that all such vertices are cubic, contain a total of either three or five derivatives and are uniquely characterized by a rank-three constant tensor (an internal algebra structure constant). The covariant cubic vertex containing three derivatives is the vertex discovered by Berends, Burgers and van Dam, which however leads to inconsistencies at second order in the deformation parameter. In dimensions n>4 and for a completely antisymmetric structure constant tensor, another covariant cubic vertex exists, which contains five derivatives and passes the consistency test where the previous vertex failed.

Parity violating vertices for spin-3 gauge fields

The problem of constructing consistent parity-violating interactions for spin-3 gauge fields is considered in Minkowski space. Under the assumptions of locality, Poincaré invariance and parity non-invariance, we classify all the nontrivial perturbative deformations of the abelian gauge algebra. In space-time dimensions $n=3$ and $n=5$, deformations of the free theory are obtained which make the gauge algebra non-abelian and give rise to nontrivial cubic vertices in the Lagrangian, at first order in the deformation parameter $g$. At second order in $g$, consistency conditions are obtained which the five-dimensional vertex obeys, but which rule out the $n=3$ candidate. Moreover, in the five-dimensional first order deformation case, the gauge transformations are modified by a new term which involves the second de Wit--Freedman connection in a simple and suggestive way.
