Spectral flow and level spacing of edge states for quantum Hall hamiltonians

We consider a non relativistic particle on the surface of a semi-infinite cylinder of circumference $L$ submitted to a perpendicular magnetic field of strength $B$ and to the potential of impurities of maximal amplitude $w$. This model is of importance in the context of the integer quantum Hall effect. In the regime of strong magnetic field or weak disorder $B>>w$ it is known that there are chiral edge states, which are localised within a few magnetic lengths close to, and extended along the boundary of the cylinder, and whose energy levels lie in the gaps of the bulk system. These energy levels have a spectral flow, uniform in $L$, as a function of a magnetic flux which threads the cylinder along its axis. Through a detailed study of this spectral flow we prove that the spacing between two consecutive levels of edge states is bounded below by $2παL^{-1}$ with $α>0$, independent of $L$, and of the configuration of impurities. This implies that the level repulsion of the chiral edge states is much stronger than that of extended states in the usual Anderson model and their statistics cannot obey one of the Gaussian ensembles. Our analysis uses the notion of relative index between two projections and indicates that the level repulsion is connected to topological aspects of quantum Hall systems.

Spectral Properties of Finite Quantum Hall Systems

In this note we review spectral properties of magnetic random Schroedinger operators H_omega=H_0+V_omega + U_l + U_r defined on L^2(R x [-L/2,L/2],dx dy) with periodic boundary conditions along y. U_l and U_r are two confining potentials for x<-L/2 and x>L/2 respectively and vanish for -L/2<x<L/2. We describe the spectrum in two energy intervals and we classify it according to the quantum mechanical current of eigenstates along the periodic direction. The first interval lies in the first Landau band of the bulk Hamiltonian, and contains intermixed eigenvalues with a quantum mechanical current of O(1) and O(e^{-gamma B(log L)^2}) respectively. The second interval lies in the first spectral gap of the bulk Hamiltonian, and contains only eigenvalues with a quantum mechanical current of O(1).

On the flux phase conjecture at half-filling: an improved proof

We present a simplification of Lieb's proof of the flux phase conjecture for interacting fermion systems -- such as the Hubbard model --, at half filling on a general class of graphs. The main ingredient is a procedure which transforms a class of fermionic Hamiltonians into reflection positive form. The method can also be applied to other problems, which we briefly illustrate with two examples concerning the $t-V$ model and an extended Falicov-Kimball model.
