Localization of the eigenfunctions of a Bloch-Torrey operator on the half-plane

We consider a non-self adjoint operator of the form $-h^2 \Delta + i(V(x) + \alpha(x)y)$ on the upper half plane $y > 0$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on $\{y = 0\}$ with $V \geq 0$, $V$ admitting a non-degenerate minimum at $x = 0$ and $\alpha'(0) = 0$. We study its eigenfunctions associated to the smallest eigenvalues in magnitude in the semiclassical limit $h \to 0$. Elementary variational estimates show that these eigenfunctions are localized near the point $(0,0)$ at the scales $O(h^{1/3})$ in $x$ and $O(h^{2/3})$ in $y$. In this paper, we show that the $O(h^{1/3})$ localization in $x$ is not optimal; more precisely, we establish that the eigenfunctions are concentrated in a neighborhood of size $O(h^{1/2})$ of the axis $\{x = 0\}$, and this scale is shown to be sharp. The proof relies on the symbolic calculus of operator-valued pseudodifferential operators.

Semiclassical tunneling for some 1D Schr\"odinger operators with complex-valued potentials

We consider the non-selfadjoint, semiclassical Schr\"odinger operator $\mathscr{L}(h) := -h^2\partial_x^2+e^{i\alpha}V$, where $\alpha \in (-\pi,\pi)$ and $V: \mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}_+$ is even and vanishes at exactly two (symmetric) non-degenerate minima. We establish a semiclassical tunneling result: the spectrum of $\mathscr{L}(h)$ near the origin is given by a sequence of algebraically simple eigenvalues which come in exponentially close pairs (within a $\mathscr{O}(e^{-S/h})$ distance where $S > 0$ is explicit), each pair being separated from the others by a distance $\mathscr{O}(h)$. A one-term estimate of the gap between the two smallest eigenvalues in magnitude is derived; it reveals that, when $\alpha \neq 0$, they quickly rotate around each other as $h$ goes to $0$.

Green's functions for magnetic Dirac operators and bulk-edge correspondence

We study the resolvent kernel (Green's function) of magnetic Dirac operators on a half-plane with boundary conditions interpolating between infinite mass and zigzag cases, excluding the latter. We show that these kernels have all the required properties so that the proof of bulk-edge correspondence from the infinite mass case shown recently can be repeated ad litteram. The zigzag case exhibits qualitatively different behavior and will be addressed in future work.

Tunneling between magnetic wells in two dimensions

The two-dimensional magnetic Laplacian is considered. We calculate the leading term of the splitting between the first two eigenvalues of the operator in the semiclassical limit under the assumption that the magnetic field does not vanish and has two symmetric magnetic wells with respect to the coordinate axes. This is the first result of quantum tunneling between purely magnetic wells under generic assumptions. The proof, which strongly relies on microlocal analysis, reveals a purely magnetic Agmon distance between the wells. Surprisingly, it is discovered that the exponential decay of the eigenfunctions away from the magnetic wells is not crucial to derive the tunneling formula. The key is a microlocal exponential decay inside the characteristic manifold, with respect to the variable quantizing the classical center guide motion.

The superadiabatic projectors method applied to the spectral theory of magnetic operators

This article deals with a generalization of the superadiabatic projectors method. In a general framework, the well-known superadiabatic projectors are constructed and accurately described in the case of rank one, when a remarkable factorization occurs. We apply these ideas to spectral theory and we explain how our abstract results allow to recover or improve recent results about the semiclassical magnetic Laplacian.

Abrupt changes in the spectra of the Laplacian with constant complex magnetic field

We analyze the spectrum of the Laplace operator, subject to homogeneous complex magnetic fields in the plane. For real magnetic fields, it is well-known that the spectrum consists of isolated eigenvalues of infinite multiplicities (Landau levels). We demonstrate that when the magnetic field has a nonzero imaginary component, the spectrum expands to cover the entire complex plane. Additionally, we show that the Landau levels (appropriately rotated and now embedded in the complex plane) persists, unless the magnetic field is purely imaginary in which case they disappear and the spectrum becomes purely continuous.

The Laplacian with complex magnetic fields

We study the two-dimensional magnetic Laplacian when the magnetic field is allowed to be complex-valued. Under the assumption that the imaginary part of the magnetic potential is relatively form-bounded with respect to the real part of the magnetic Laplacian, we introduce the operator as an m-sectorial operator. In two dimensions, sufficient conditions are established to guarantee that the resolvent is compact. In the case of non-critical complex magnetic fields, a WKB approach is used to construct semiclassical pseudomodes, which do not exist when the magnetic field is real-valued.

Dirac bag model on thin domains: a microlocal viewpoint

The Dirac operator is considered on a bidimensional domain whose boundary carries the infinite mass boundary condition. The analysis is focused on the existence of discrete spectrum and on its asymptotic description in the thin width limit. We revisit a recent result by using an alternative view point inspired by microlocal analysis.

Magnetic Dirac operator in strips submitted to strong magnetic fields

We consider the magnetic Dirac operator on a curved strip whose boundary carries the infinite mass boundary condition. When the magnetic field is large, we provide the reader with accurate estimates of the essential and discrete spectra. In particular, we give sufficient conditions ensuring that the discrete spectrum is non-empty.

An Example Of Accurate Microlocal Tunneling In One Dimension

We investigate the spectral analysis of a class of pseudo-differential operators in one dimension. Under symmetry assumptions, we prove an asymptotic formula for the splitting of the first two eigenvalues. This article is a first example of extension to pseudo-differential operators of the tunneling effect formulas known for the symmetric electric Schr{\"o}dinger operator.

Semiclassical asymptotics of the Bloch--Torrey operator in two dimensions

The Bloch--Torrey operator $-h^2\Delta+e^{i\alpha}x_1$ on a bounded smooth planar domain, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions, is analyzed. Assuming $\alpha\in\left[0,\frac{3\pi}{5}\right)$ and a non-degeneracy assumption on the left-hand side of the domain, asymptotics of the eigenvalues with the smallest real part in the limit $h \to 0$ are derived. The strategy is a backward complex scaling and the reduction to a tensorized operator involving a real Airy operator and a complex harmonic oscillator.

Magnetic Dirac systems: Violation of bulk-edge correspondence in the zigzag limit

We consider a Dirac operator with constant magnetic field defined on a half-plane with boundary conditions that interpolate between infinite mass and zigzag. By a detailed study of the energy dispersion curves we show that the infinite mass case generically captures the profile of these curves, which undergoes a continuous pointwise deformation into the topologically different zigzag profile. Moreover, these results are applied to the bulk-edge correspondence. In particular, by means of a counterexample, we show that this correspondence does not always hold true in the zigzag case.

Boundary states of the Robin magnetic Laplacian

This article tackles the spectral analysis of the Robin Laplacian on a smooth bounded two-dimensional domain in the presence of a constant magnetic field. In the semiclassical limit, a uniform description of the spectrum located between the Landau levels is obtained. The corresponding eigenfunctions, called edge states, are exponentially localized near the boundary. By means of a microlocal dimensional reduction, our unifying approach allows on the one hand to derive a very precise Weyl law and a proof of quantum magnetic oscillations for excited states, and on the other hand to refine simultaneously old results about the low-lying eigenvalues in the Robin case and recent ones about edge states in the Dirichlet case.

Purely magnetic tunnelling between radial magnetic wells

This article is devoted to the semiclassical spectral analysis of the magnetic Laplacian in two dimensions. Assuming that the magnetic field is positive and has two symmetric radial wells, we establish an accurate tunnelling formula, that is a one-term estimate of the spectral gap between the lowest two eigenvalues. This gap is exponentially small when the semiclassical parameter goes to zero, but positive.

Spectral asymptotics of the Neumann Laplacian with variable magnetic field on a smooth bounded domain in three dimensions

This article is devoted the semiclassical spectral analysis of the Neumann magnetic Laplacian on a smooth bounded domain in three dimensions. Under a generic assumption on the variable magnetic field (involving a localization of the eigenfunctions near the boundary), we establish a semiclassical expansion of the lowest eigenvalues. In particular, we prove that the eigenvalues become simple in the semiclassical limit.

Correlative mapping of local hysteresis properties in VO$_2$

We have developed a new optical microscopy technique able to track micron-sized surface clusters as temperature is varied. Potential candidates for study include phase separated metal-insulator materials, ferroelectrics, and porous structures. Several key techniques (including autofocus, step motor/cross correlation alignments, single-pixel thresholding, pair connectivity correlation length and image convolution) were implemented in order to obtain a time series of thresholded images. Here, we apply this new method to probe the archetypal phase separated insulator-metal transition in VO$_2$. A precise time and temperature series of the insulator-metal transition was achieved, allowing us to construct for the first time in this material spatial maps of the transition temperature T$_c$. These maps reveal multiple interesting features such as fractal electronic patterns on micron scales, regions of the sample with an extremely large or nearly absent local hysteresis, a positive correlation between the T$_c$ value and the hysteresis width $\Delta$T$_c$, and high cycle-to-cycle reproducibility of the transition. These maps also allow for the identification of individual pixels with unique transition characteristics. This unprecedented knowledge of the local properties of each spot along with the behavior of the entire network paves the way to novel electronics applications enabled by, {\em e.g.}, addressing specific regions with desired memory and/or switching characteristics, as well as detailed explorations of open questions in the theory of hysteresis.

Machine learning strategies to predict late adverse effects in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most frequent pediatric cancer. Approximately two third of survivors develop one or more health complications known as late adverse effects following their treatments. The existing measures offered to patients during their follow-up visits to the hospital are rather standardized for all childhood cancer survivors and not necessarily personalized for childhood ALL survivors. As a result, late adverse effects may be underdiagnosed and, in most cases, only taken care of following their appearance. Thus, it is necessary to predict these treatment-related conditions earlier in order to prevent them and enhance the survivors' health. Multiple studies have investigated the development of late adverse effects prediction tools to offer better personalized follow-up methods. However, no solution integrated the usage of neural networks to date. In this work, we developed graph-based parameters-efficient neural networks and promoted their interpretability with multiple post-hoc analyses. We first proposed a new disease-specific VO$_2$ peak prediction model that does not require patients to participate to a physical function test (e.g., 6-minute walk test) and further created an obesity prediction model using clinical variables that are available from the end of childhood ALL treatment as well as genomic variables. Our solutions were able to achieve better performance than linear and tree-based models on small cohorts of patients ($\leq$ 223) for both tasks.

Discrete spectrum of the magnetic Laplacian on perturbed half-planes

The existence of bound states for the magnetic Laplacian in unbounded domains can be quite challenging in the case of a homogeneous magnetic field. We provide an affirmative answer for almost flat corners and slightly curved half-planes when the total curvature of the boundary is positive.
