Magneto-Stark polaron states in semiconductor quantum wells

We study theoretically the effect of a lateral electric field on the magneto-polaron states in a quantum cascade laser under a quantizing magnetic field. We show that this problem fits the original Fano model of a discrete state coupled to a continuum, present a detailed analysis of magneto-Stark polaron resonances, and finally discuss the strong consequences on the optical characteristics of an operating structure.

Clustering properties, Jack polynomials and unitary conformal field theories

Recently, Jack polynomials have been proposed as natural generalizations of Z_k Read-Rezayi states describing non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall systems. These polynomials are conjectured to be related to correlation functions of a class of W-conformal field theories based on the Lie algebra A_{k-1}. These theories can be considered as non-unitary solutions of a more general series of CFTs with Z_k symmetry, the parafermionic theories. Starting from the observation that some parafermionic theories admit unitary solutions as well, we show, by computing the corresponding correlation functions, that these theories provide trial wavefunctions which satisfy the same clustering properties as the non-unitary ones. We show explicitly that, although the wavefunctions constructed by unitary CFTs cannot be expressed as a single Jack polynomial, they still show a fine structure where the mathematical properties of the Jack polynomials play a major role.

Entanglement signatures of quantum Hall phase transitions

We study quantum phase transitions involving fractional quantum Hall states, using numerical calculations of entanglements and related quantities. We tune finite-size wavefunctions on spherical geometries, by varying the interaction potential away from the Coulomb interaction. We uncover signatures of quantum phase transitions contained in the scaling behavior of the entropy of entanglement between two parts of the sphere. In addition to the entanglement entropy, we show that signatures of quantum phase transitions also appear in other aspects of the reduced density matrix of one part of the sphere.

Supernova Shock Breakout from a Red Supergiant

Massive stars undergo a violent death when the supply of nuclear fuel in their cores is exhausted, resulting in a catastrophic "core-collapse" supernova. Such events are usually only detected at least a few days after the star has exploded. Observations of the supernova SNLS-04D2dc with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer space telescope reveal a radiative precursor from the supernova shock before the shock reached the surface of the star and show the initial expansion of the star at the beginning of the explosion. Theoretical models of the ultraviolet light curve confirm that the progenitor was a red supergiant, as expected for this type of supernova. These observations provide a way to probe the physics of core-collapse supernovae and the internal structures of their progenitor stars

Current noise through a Kondo quantum dot in a SU(N) Fermi liquid state

The current noise through a mesoscopic quantum dot is calculated and analyzed in the Fermi liquid regime of the SU(N) Kondo model. Results connect the Johnson-Nyquist noise to the shot noise for an arbitrary ratio of voltage and temperature, and show that temperature corrections are sizeable in usual experiments. For the experimentally relevant SU(4) case, quasiparticle interactions are shown to increase the shot noise.

Numerical studies of the Pfaffian model of the nu=5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect

The Pfaffian model has been proposed for the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at nu=5/2. We examine it for the quasihole excitations by comparison with exact diagonalization results. Specifically, we consider the structure of the low-energy spectrum, accuracy of the microscopic wave functions, particle-hole symmetry, splitting of the degeneracies, and off-diagonal long range order. We also review how the 5/2 FQHE can be understood without appealing to the Pfaffian model. Implications for nonabelian braiding statistics will be mentioned.

Nature of excitations of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect

It is shown, with the help of exact diagonalization studies on systems with up to sixteen electrons, in the presence of up to two delta function impurities, that the Pfaffian model is inadequate for the actual quasiholes and quasiparticles of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect. Implications for non-Abelian statistics are discussed.

Towards a Cosmological Hubble Diagram for Type II-P Supernovae

We present the first high-redshift Hubble diagram for Type II-P supernovae (SNe II-P) based upon five events at redshift up to z~0.3. This diagram was constructed using photometry from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Supernova Legacy Survey and absorption line spectroscopy from the Keck observatory. The method used to measure distances to these supernovae is based on recent work by Hamuy & Pinto (2002) and exploits a correlation between the absolute brightness of SNe II-P and the expansion velocities derived from the minimum of the Fe II 516.9 nm P-Cygni feature observed during the plateau phases. We present three refinements to this method which significantly improve the practicality of measuring the distances of SNe II-P at cosmologically interesting redshifts. These are an extinction correction measurement based on the V-I colors at day 50, a cross-correlation measurement for the expansion velocity and the ability to extrapolate such velocities accurately over almost the entire plateau phase. We apply this revised method to our dataset of high-redshift SNe II-P and find that the resulting Hubble diagram has a scatter of only 0.26 magnitudes, thus demonstrating the feasibility of measuring the expansion history, with present facilities, using a method independent of that based upon supernovae of Type Ia.

Electronic continuum states and far infrared absorption of InAs/GaAs quantum dots

The electronic continuum states of InAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dots embedded in a GaAs/AlAs superlattice are theoretically investigated and the far infrared absorption spectra are calculated for a variety of structures and polarizations. The effect of a strong magnetic field applied parallel to the growth direction is also investigated. We predict that the flatness of the InAs/GaAs dots leads to a far infrared absorption which is almost insensitive to the magnetic field, in spite of the reorganization of the continuum into series of quasi-Landau states. We also predict that it is possible to design InAs/GaAs photoconductors which display very strong in-plane absorption.

Composite-fermionization of bosons in rapidly rotating atomic traps

The non-perturbative effect of interaction can sometimes make interacting bosons behave as though they were free fermions. The system of neutral bosons in a rapidly rotating atomic trap is equivalent to charged bosons coupled to a magnetic field, which has opened up the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect for bosons interacting with a short range interaction. Motivated by the composite fermion theory of the fractional Hall effect of electrons, we test the idea that the interacting bosons map into non-interacting spinless fermions carrying one vortex each, by comparing wave functions incorporating this physics with exact wave functions available for systems containing up to 12 bosons. We study here the analogy between interacting bosons at filling factors $ν=n/(n+1)$ with non-interacting fermions at $ν^*=n$ for the ground state as well as the low-energy excited states and find that it provides a good account of the behavior for small $n$, but interactions between fermions become increasingly important with $n$. At $ν=1$, which is obtained in the limit $n\rightarrow \infty$, the fermionization appears to overcompensate for the repulsive interaction between bosons, producing an {\em attractive} interactions between fermions, as evidenced by a pairing of fermions here.

Quantum Hall fractions in ultracold fermionic vapors

We study the quantum Hall states that appear in the dilute limit of rotating ultracold fermionic gases when a single hyperfine species is present. We show that the p-wave scattering translates into a pure hard-core interaction in the lowest Landau level. The Laughlin wavefunction is then the exact ground state at filling fraction nu=1/3. We give estimates of some of the gaps of the incompressible liquids for nu = p/(2p+-1). We estimate the mass of the composite fermions at nu =1/2. The width of the quantum Hall plateaus is discussed by considering the equation of state of the system.

Quantum Hall fractions for spinless Bosons

We study the Quantum Hall phases that appear in the fast rotation limit for Bose-Einstein condensates of spinless bosonic atoms. We use exact diagonalization in a spherical geometry to obtain low-lying states of a small number of bosons as a function of the angular momentum. This allows to understand or guess the physics at a given filling fraction nu, ratio of the number of bosons to the number of vortices. This is also the filling factor of the lowest Landau level. In addition to the well-known Bose Laughlin state at nu =1/2 we give evidence for the Jain principal sequence of incompressible states at nu =p/(p+- 1) for a few values of p. There is a collective mode in these states whose phenomenology is in agreement with standard arguments coming e.g. from the composite fermion picture. At filling factor one, the potential Fermi sea of composite fermions is replaced by a paired state, the Moore-Read state. This is most clearly seen from the half-flux nature of elementary excitations. We find that the hierarchy picture does not extend up to the point of transition towards a vortex lattice. While we cannot conclude, we investigate the clustered Read-Rezayi states and show evidence for incompressible states at the expected ratio of flux vs number of Bose particles.

Alloy effects in GaInN/GaN heterostructures

We show that the large band offsets between GaN and InN and the heavy carrier effective masses preclude the use of the Virtual Crystal Approximation to describe the electronic structure of Ga_(1-x)In_(x)N/GaN heterostructures while this approximation works very well for the Ga_(1-x)In_(x)As/GaAs heterostructures.

Vertex Operator Solutions of 2d Dimensionally Reduced Gravity

We apply algebraic and vertex operator techniques to solve two dimensional reduced vacuum Einstein's equations. This leads to explicit expressions for the coefficients of metrics solutions of the vacuum equations as ratios of determinants. No quadratures are left. These formulas rely on the identification of dual pairs of vertex operators corresponding to dual metrics related by the Kramer-Neugebauer symmetry.

A Nearby Supernovae Search: Eros2

Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) have been used as approximate standard candles to measure cosmological parameters such as the Hubble constant and the deceleration parameter. These measurements rely on empirical correlations between peak luminosities and other features that can be observed in the supernovae spectra and their light curves. Such correlations deserve further study since they have been established from small samples of nearby SNIa. Two years ago, the EROS2 collaboration launched an automated search for supernovae with the 1m Marly telescope operating at La Silla. In all, 57 SNe have been discovered in this EROS2 search and spectra have been obtained for 26 of them. We found that 75% were of type Ia and 25% of type II. Using this sample, a preliminary SN explosion rate has been obtained. Our most recent observation campaign took place in February and March 99. It was performed in the framework of a large consortium led by the {\em Supernova Cosmology Project}. The aim of this intensive campaign was to provide an independent set of high quality light curves and spectra to study systematic effects in the measurement of cosmological parameters. We will briefly describe our search procedure and present the status of our ongoing analysis.
