A Data-Efficient Model-Based Learning Framework for the Closed-Loop Control of Continuum Robots

Traditional dynamic models of continuum robots are in general computationally expensive and not suitable for real-time control. Recent approaches using learning-based methods to approximate the dynamic model of continuum robots for control have been promising, although real data hungry -- which may cause potential damage to robots and be time consuming -- and getting poorer performance when trained with simulation data only. This paper presents a model-based learning framework for continuum robot closed-loop control that, by combining simulation and real data, shows to require only 100 real data to outperform a real-data-only controller trained using up to 10000 points. The introduced data-efficient framework with three control policies has utilized a Gaussian process regression (GPR) and a recurrent neural network (RNN). Control policy A uses a GPR model and a RNN trained in simulation to optimize control outputs for simulated targets; control policy B retrains the RNN in policy A with data generated from the GPR model to adapt to real robot physics; control policy C utilizes policy A and B to form a hybrid policy. Using a continuum robot with soft spines, we show that our approach provides an efficient framework to bridge the sim-to-real gap in model-based learning for continuum robots.

A Continuum Manipulator for Open-Source Surgical Robotics Research and Shared Development

Many have explored the application of continuum robot manipulators for minimally invasive surgery, and have successfully demonstrated the advantages their flexible design provides -- with some solutions having reached commercialisation and clinical practice. However, the usual high complexity and closed-nature of such designs has traditionally restricted the shared development of continuum robots across the research area, thus impacting further progress and the solution of open challenges. In order to close this gap, this paper introduces ENDO, an open-source 3-segment continuum robot manipulator with control and actuation mechanism, whose focus is on simplicity, affordability, and accessibility. This robotic system is fabricated from low cost off-the-shelf components and rapid prototyping methods, and its information for implementation (and that of future iterations), including CAD files and source code, is available to the public on the Open Source Medical Robots initiative's repository on GitHub (https://github.com/OpenSourceMedicalRobots), with the control library also available directly from Arduino. Herein, we present details of the robot design and control, validate functionality by experimentally evaluating its workspace, and discuss possible paths for future development.

Design and Workspace Characterisation of Malleable Robots

For the majority of tasks performed by traditional serial robot arms, such as bin picking or pick and place, only two or three degrees of freedom (DOF) are required for motion; however, by augmenting the number of degrees of freedom, further dexterity of robot arms for multiple tasks can be achieved. Instead of increasing the number of joints of a robot to improve flexibility and adaptation, which increases control complexity, weight, and cost of the overall system, malleable robots utilise a variable stiffness link between joints allowing the relative positioning of the revolute pairs at each end of the link to vary, thus enabling a low DOF serial robot to adapt across tasks by varying its workspace. In this paper, we present the design and prototyping of a 2-DOF malleable robot, calculate the general equation of its workspace using a parameterisation based on distance geometry---suitable for robot arms of variable topology, and characterise the workspace categories that the end effector of the robot can trace via reconfiguration. Through the design and construction of the malleable robot we explore design considerations, and demonstrate the viability of the overall concept. By using motion tracking on the physical robot, we show examples of the infinite number of workspaces that the introduced 2-DOF malleable robot can achieve.

Non-renormalizable Operators for Solar Mass Generation in Split SuSy with Bilinear R-parity Violation

The Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) is able to explain the current data from neutrino physics. Unfortunately Split Supersymmetry as low energy approximation of this theory fails to generate a solar square mass difference, including after the addition of bilinear R-Parity Violation. In this work, it is shown how one can derive an effective low energy theory from the MSSM in the spirit of Split Supersymmetry, which has the potential of explaining the neutrino phenomenology. This is achieved by going beyond leading order in the process of integrating out heavy scalars from the original theory, which results in non-renormalizable operators in the effective low energy theory. It is found that in particular a $d=8$ operator is crucial for the generation of the neutrino mass differences.

Implications of Bilinear R-Parity Violation on Neutrinos and Lightest Neutralino Decay in Split Supersymmetry

We discuss neutrino parameters in addition with the effects of a Higgs boson of mass $\sim$ 125 GeV in Split Supersymmetry with Bilinear R-Parity Violation. This model allows for the explanation of neutrino masses and mixing angles, and has the gravitino as Dark Matter candidate. We find constraints on the parameters in the neutrino sector of the model by performing a numerical study of the parameter space, and by fitting neutrino oscillation observables and the Higgs mass. In addition, we study in detail the decay of the lightest neutralino in this model and we realize the importance of the exact neutralino/chargino spectrum in the computation of its branching ratios.

On Neutrino Masses in the MSSM with BRpV

One loop corrections to the neutrino mass matrix within the MSSM with Bilinear R Parity Violation are calculated, paying attention to the approach in which an effective $3\times 3$ neutrino mass matrix is used. The full mass matrix is block diagonalized, it is found that second and third order terms can be numerically important, and this is analytically understood. Top-stop loops do not contribute to the effective $3\times 3$ at first order, nevertheless they contribute at third. An improved $3\times 3$ approach that include these effects is proposed.

Exploring a Tractable Lagrangian for Arbitrary Spin

A simple Lagrangian is proposed that by the choice of the representation of SU(2), gives rise to field equations for arbitrary spin. In explicit examples it is shown, how the Klein-Gordon, the Dirac, and the Proca equation can be obtained from this Lagrangian. On the same footing, field equations for arbitrary spin are given. Finally, symmetries are discussed, the fields are quantized, their statistics is deduced, and Feynman rules are derived.
