Compressibility of micromagnetic solutions in tensor train format

For three-dimensional (3D) magnetic objects with linear size $L$ exceeding a few exchange lengths, the micromagnetic state exhibits pronounced informational sparsity: low-dimensional, high-gradient regions (e.g., domain walls) coexist with near-uniformly magnetized volumetric domains. Because standard micromagnetic simulation methods discretize the magnetization on near-uniform 3D grids with linear cell size $a$, they cannot take advantage of this sparsity. The computational problem scales as $\sim L^3$ and $\sim (1/a)^3$. In this Letter, we establish that direct tensor-train (TT) representations overcome these poor scalings by exploiting the spatial sparsity optimally, while preserving accuracy in a controlled way. Focusing on representative flux-closure configurations in soft-magnetic rectangular prisms, in the near-micrometer regime, we demonstrate that the parameter count of TT-compressed micromagnetic data scales approximately as $L^{1.8}$ and $(1/a)^{1.2}$. Hence the relative advantage over dense discretizations rapidly grows with the problem size and refinement level. These first results provide a strong motivation for future developments of micromagnetic solvers in TT format which could transcend the limitations of traditional simulators, with far reaching potential impacts on fundamental research and technology development.

Hybrid ultrathin metasurface for broadband sound absorption

To this day, achieving broadband low-frequency sound absorption remains a challenge even with the possibilities promised by the advent of metamaterials and metasurfaces, especially when size and structural restrictions exist. Solving this engineering challenge relies on stringent impedance matching and coupling of the multiple independent local resonators in metasurface absorbers. In this letter, we present an innovative design approach to broaden the sound absorption bandwidth at low-frequency regime. A hybrid metasurface design is proposed where four coupled planar coiled resonators are also coupled to a well designed thin planar cavity. This hybrid metasurface creates a broad sound absorption band (130-200 Hz) that is twice as wide as that of the traditional single layer metasurface utilizing four coiled cavities at a deep sub-wavelength thickness (< λ/51). This design strategy open routes towards engineering a class of high performance thin metasurfaces for ultra-broadband sound absorption while keeping the planar size unchanged.

Bright and dark states of two distant macrospins strongly coupled by phonons

We study the collective dynamics of two distant magnets coherently coupled by acoustic phonons that are transmitted through an intercalated crystal. By tuning the ferromagnetic resonances of the two magnets to an acoustic resonance of the crystal, we control a coherent three levels system. We show that the parity of the phonon mode governs the nature of the indirect coupling between the magnets: the resonances with odd / even phonon modes correspond to out-of-phase / in-phase lattice displacements at the magnets, leading to bright / dark states in response to uniform microwave magnetic fields, respectively. The sample is a tri-layer garnet consisting of two thin magnetic layers epitaxially grown on both sides of a half-millimeter thick non-magnetic single crystal. In spite of the relatively weak magneto-elastic interaction, the long lifetimes of the magnon and phonon modes in the sample are the key to unveil this long range strong coupling. This demonstrates that garnets are a great platform to study multi-partite hybridization process between magnon and phonons at microwave frequencies.

Coherent long-range transfer of angular momentum between magnon Kittel modes by phonons

We report ferromagnetic resonance in the normal configuration of an electrically insulating magnetic bilayer consisting of two yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films epitaxially grown on both sides of a 0.5-mm-thick nonmagnetic gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) slab. An interference pattern is observed and it is explained as the strong coupling of the magnetization dynamics of the two YIG layers either in phase or out of phase by the standing transverse sound waves, which are excited through a magnetoelastic interaction. This coherent mediation of angular momentum by circularly polarized phonons through a nonmagnetic material over macroscopic distances can be useful for future information technologies.

Temperature Dependence of Magnetic Properties of an 18-nm-thick YIG Film Grown by Liquid Phase Epitaxy: Effect of a Pt Overlayer

Liquid phase epitaxy of an 18 nm thick Yttrium Iron garnet (YIG) film is achieved. Its magnetic properties are investigated in the 100 -- 400 K temperature range, as well as the influence of a 3 nm thick Pt overlayer on them. The saturation magnetization and the magnetocrystalline cubic anisotropy of the bare YIG film behave similarly to bulk YIG. A damping parameter of only a few $10^{-4}$ is measured, together with a low inhomogeneous contribution to the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth. The magnetic relaxation increases upon decreasing temperature, which can be partly ascribed to impurity relaxation mechanisms. While it does not change its cubic anisotropy, the Pt capping strongly affects the uniaxial perpendicular anisotropy of the YIG film, in particular at low temperatures. The interfacial coupling in the YIG/Pt heterostructure is also revealed by an increase of the linewidth, which substantially grows by lowering the temperature.

Thermal Control of the Magnon-Photon Coupling in a Notch Filter coupled to a Yttrium-Iron-Garnet/Platinum System

We report thermal control of mode hybridization between the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and a planar resonator (notch filter) working at 4.74 GHz. The chosen magnetic material is a ferrimagnetic insulator (Yttrium Iron Garnet: YIG) covered by 6 nm of platinum (Pt). A current induced heating method has been used in order to enhance the temperature of the YIG/Pt system. The device permits us to control the transmission spectra and the magnon-photon coupling strength at room temperature. These experimental findings reveal potentially applicable tunable microwave filtering function.

Complete mapping of the spin-wave spectrum in vortex state nano-disk

We report a study on the complete spin-wave spectrum inside a vortex state nano-disk. Transformation of this spectrum is continuously monitored as the nano-disk becomes gradually magnetized by a perpendicular magnetic field and encouters a second order phase transition to the uniformly magnetized state. This reveals the bijective relationship that exists between the eigen-modes in the vortex state with the ones in the saturated state. It is found that the gyrotropic mode can be continuously viewed as a uniform phase precession, which uniquely softens (its frequency vanishes) at the saturation field to transform above into the Kittel mode. By contrast the other spin-wave modes remain finite as a function of the applied field while their character is altered by level anti-crossing.
