Constructions using Galois Theory

We describe algorithms to compute fixed fields, splitting fields and towers of radical extensions without using polynomial factorisation in towers or constructing any field containing the splitting field, instead extending Galois group computations for this task. We also describe the computation of geometric Galois groups (monodromy groups) and their use in computing absolute factorizations.

The Hasse Norm Principle in Global Function Fields

Let $L$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We calculate the proportion of polynomials of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ that are everywhere locally norms from $L/\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ which fail to be global norms from $L/\mathbb{F}_q(t)$.

Existence results for primitive elements in cubic and quartic extensions of a finite field

With $\Fq$ the finite field of $q$ elements, we investigate the following question. If $γ$ generates $\Fqn$ over $\Fq$ and $β$ is a non-zero element of $\Fqn$, is there always an $a \in \Fq$ such that $β(γ+ a)$ is a primitive element? We resolve this case when $n=3$, thereby proving a conjecture by Cohen. We also improve substantially on what is known when $n=4$.

Linear combinations of primitive elements of a finite field

We examine linear sums of primitive roots and their inverses in finite fields. In particular, we refine a result by Li and Han, and show that every $p> 13$ has a pair of primitive roots $a$ and $b$ such that $a+ b$ and $a^{-1} + b^{-1}$ are also primitive roots mod $p$.

Primitive values of quadratic polynomials in a finite field

We prove that for all $q>211$, there always exists a primitive root $g$ in the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ such that $Q(g)$ is also a primitive root, where $Q(x)= ax^2 + bx + c$ is a quadratic polynomial with $a, b, c\in \mathbb{F}_{q}$ such that $b^{2} - 4ac \neq 0$.

Galois groups over rational function fields and explicit Hilbert irreducibility

Let $P\in\mathbb Q[t,x]$ be a polynomial in two variables with rational coefficients, and let $G$ be the Galois group of $P$ over the field $\mathbb Q(t)$. It follows from Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem that for most rational numbers $c$ the specialized polynomial $P(c,x)$ has Galois group isomorphic to $G$ and factors in the same way as $P$. In this paper we discuss methods for computing the group $G$ and obtaining an explicit description of the exceptional numbers $c$, i.e., those for which $P(c,x)$ has Galois group different from $G$ or factors differently from $P$. To illustrate the methods we determine the exceptional specializations of three sample polynomials. In addition, we apply our techniques to prove a new result in arithmetic dynamics.
