Plutonium-241 as a possible isotope for neutrino mass measurement and capture

Tritium has been the isotope of choice for measurements of the neutrino mass and planned detection of the relic neutrino background. The low mass of $^{3}$H leads to large recoil energy of the nucleus. This has emerged as a limiting factor for both measurements. We investigate $^{241}$Pu as an alternative. The recoil is 80x smaller and it has similar decay energy and lifetime as $^{3}$H. We evaluate for the first time its soft-neutrino capture cross-section and find $(σv)_ν = 1.52 \times 10^{-45}$. This is 40% of the capture cross-section for tritium and makes $^{241}$Pu an interesting alternative for $^{3}$H.

Identifying hadronic charmonium decays in hadron colliders

Identification of charmonium states at hadron colliders has mostly been limited to leptonic decays of the J/ψ. In this paper we present and algorithm to identify hadronic decays of charmonium states (J/ψ, ψ(2S), χ_{c0,1,2}) which make up the large majority of all decays. The algorithm is able to identify hadronic $J/ψ$ decays with an efficiency of 36\% while suppressing a background of quark and gluon jets by a factor 100.

The LCFIVertex package: vertexing, flavour tagging and vertex charge reconstruction with an ILC vertex detector

The precision measurements envisaged at the International Linear Collider (ILC) depend on excellent instrumentation and reconstruction software. The correct identification of heavy flavour jets, placing unprecedented requirements on the quality of the vertex detector, will be central for the ILC programme. This paper describes the LCFIVertex software, which provides tools for vertex finding and for identification of the flavour and charge of the leading hadron in heavy flavour jets. These tools are essential for the ongoing optimisation of the vertex detector design for linear colliders such as the ILC. The paper describes the algorithms implemented in the LCFIVertex package, as well as the scope of the code and its performance for a typical vertex detector design.

Electroweak Results from SLD

In this paper we present three updates to heavy flavour results from the SLD detector at SLAC. These results are preliminary, based on our full 1993-1998 dataset of 550 000 hadronic Z0 decays produced with an average electron polarisation of 73%. The new measurements are of the hadronic branching fractions into heavy quarks (Rb, Rc), the b quark asymmetry (Ab) using jet charge, and the heavy quark asymmetries (Ab and Ac) using vertex charge and kaons.
