Isometries in higher dimensional CCNV spacetimes

We study the class of higher-dimensional Kundt metrics admitting a covariantly constant null vector, known as CCNV spacetimes. We pay particular attention to those CCNV spacetimes with constant (polynomial) curvature invariants (CSI). We investigate the existence of an additional isometry in CCNV spacetimes, by studying the Killing equations for the general form of the CCNV metric. In particular, we list all CCNV spacetimes allowing an additional non-spacelike isometry for all values of the lightcone coordinate v, which are of interest due to the invariance of the metric under a translation in v. As an application we use our results to find all CSI CCNV spacetimes with an additional isometry as well as the subset of these spacetimes in which the isometry is non-spacelike for all values v.

Killing vectors in higher dimensional spacetimes with constant scalar curvature invariants

We study the existence of a non-spacelike isometry, ζ, in higher dimensional Kundt spacetimes with constant scalar curvature invariants (CSI). We present the particular forms for the null or timelike Killing vectors and a set of constraints for the metric functions in each case. Within the class of N dimensional CSI Kundt spacetimes, admitting a non-spacelike isometry, we determine which of these can admit a covariantly constant null vector that also satisfy ζ_{[a;b]} = 0.

Lorentzian manifolds and scalar curvature invariants

We discuss (arbitrary-dimensional) Lorentzian manifolds and the scalar polynomial curvature invariants constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives. Recently, we have shown that in four dimensions a Lorentzian spacetime metric is either $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate, and hence locally characterized by its scalar polynomial curvature invariants, or is a degenerate Kundt spacetime. We present a number of results that generalize these results to higher dimensions and discuss their consequences and potential physical applications.

Spacetimes characterized by their scalar curvature invariants

In this paper we determine the class of four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds that can be completely characterized by the scalar polynomial curvature invariants constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives. We introduce the notion of an $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate spacetime metric, which implies that the spacetime metric is locally determined by its curvature invariants. By determining an appropriate set of projection operators from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives, we are able to prove a number of results (both in the algebraically general and in algebraically special cases) of when a spacetime metric is $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate. This enables us to prove our main theorem that a spacetime metric is either $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate or a Kundt metric. Therefore, a metric that is not characterized by its curvature invariants must be of degenerate Kundt form. We then discuss the inverse question of what properties of the underlying spacetime can be determined from a given a set of scalar polynomial invariants, and some partial results are presented. We also discuss the notions of \emph{strong} and \emph{weak} non-degeneracy.

Lorentzian spacetimes with constant curvature invariants in four dimensions

In this paper we investigate four dimensional Lorentzian spacetimes with constant curvature invariants ($CSI$ spacetimes). We prove that if a four dimensional spacetime is $CSI$, then either the spacetime is locally homogeneous or the spacetime is a Kundt spacetime for which there exists a frame such that the positive boost weight components of all curvature tensors vanish and the boost weight zero components are all constant. We discuss some of the properties of the Kundt-$CSI$ spacetimes and their applications. In particular, we discuss $\mathcal{I}$-symmetric spaces and degenerate Kundt $CSI$ spacetimes.

The curvature homogeneity bound for Lorentzian four-manifolds

We prove that a four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold that is curvature homogeneous of order 3, or CH_3 for short, is necessarily locally homogeneous. We also exhibit and classify four-dimensional Lorentzian, CH_2 manifolds that are not homogeneous. The resulting metrics belong to the class of null electromagnetic radiation, type N solutions on an anti-de Sitter background. These findings prove that the four-dimensional Lorentzian Singer number $k_{1,3}=3$, falsifying some recent conjectures by Gilkey. We also prove that invariant classification for these proper CH_2 solutions requires $\nabla^{(7)}R$, and that these are the unique metrics requiring the seventh order.

Lorentzian spacetimes with constant curvature invariants in three dimensions

In this paper we study Lorentzian spacetimes for which all polynomial scalar invariants constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives are constant (CSI spacetimes) in three dimensions. We determine all such CSI metrics explicitly, and show that for every CSI with particular constant invariants there is a locally homogeneous spacetime with precisely the same constant invariants. We prove that a three-dimensional CSI spacetime is either (i) locally homogeneous or (ii) it is locally a Kundt spacetime. Moreover, we show that there exists a null frame in which the Riemann (Ricci) tensor and its derivatives are of boost order zero with constant boost weight zero components at each order. Lastly, these spacetimes can be explicitly constructed from locally homogeneous spacetimes and vanishing scalar invariant spacetimes.

The type N Karlhede bound is sharp

We present a family of four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds whose invariant classification requires the seventh covariant derivative of the curvature tensor. The spacetimes in questions are null radiation, type N solutions on an anti-de Sitter background. The large order of the bound is due to the fact that these spacetimes are properly $CH_2$, i.e., curvature homogeneous of order 2 but non-homogeneous. This means that tetrad components of $R, \nabla R, \nabla^{(2)}R$ are constant, and that essential coordinates first appear as components of $\nabla^{(3)}R$. Covariant derivatives of orders 4,5,6 yield one additional invariant each, and $\nabla^{(7)}R$ is needed for invariant classification. Thus, our class proves that the bound of 7 on the order of the covariant derivative, first established by Karlhede, is sharp. Our finding corrects an outstanding assertion that invariant classification of four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds requires at most $\nabla^{(6)}R$.

On Spacetimes with Constant Scalar Invariants

We study Lorentzian spacetimes for which all scalar invariants constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives are constant ($CSI$ spacetimes). We obtain a number of general results in arbitrary dimensions. We study and construct warped product $CSI$ spacetimes and higher-dimensional Kundt $CSI$ spacetimes. We show how these spacetimes can be constructed from locally homogeneous spaces and $VSI$ spacetimes. The results suggest a number of conjectures. In particular, it is plausible that for $CSI$ spacetimes that are not locally homogeneous the Weyl type is $II$, $III$, $N$ or $O$, with any boost weight zero components being constant. We then consider the four-dimensional $CSI$ spacetimes in more detail. We show that there are severe constraints on these spacetimes, and we argue that it is plausible that they are either locally homogeneous or that the spacetime necessarily belongs to the Kundt class of $CSI$ spacetimes, all of which are constructed. The four-dimensional results lend support to the conjectures in higher dimensions.

Gravitational entropy in cosmological models

We discuss whether an appropriately defined dimensionless scalar function might be an acceptable candidate for the gravitational entropy, by explicitly considering Szekeres and Bianchi type VI$_{h}$ models that admit an isotropic singularity. We also briefly discuss other possible gravitational entropy functions, including an appropriate measure of the velocity dependent Bel-Robinson tensor.

Properties of the instantaneous Ergo Surface of a Kerr Black Hole

This paper explores properties of the instantaneous ergo surface of a Kerr black hole. The surface area is evaluated in closed form. In terms of the mass ($m$) and angular velocity ($a$), to second order in $a$, the area of the ergo surface is given by $16 πm^2 + 4 πa^2$ (compared to the familiar $16 πm^2 - 4 πa^2$ for the event horizon). Whereas the total curvature of the instantaneous event horizon is $4 π$, on the ergo surface it ranges from $4 π$ (for $a=0$) to 0 (for $a=m$) due to conical singularities on the axis ($θ=0,π$) of deficit angle $2 π(1-\sqrt{1-(a/m)^2})$. A careful application of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem shows that the ergo surface remains topologically spherical. Isometric embeddings of the ergo surface in Euclidean 3-space are defined for $0 \leq a/m \leq 1$ (compared to $0 \leq a/m \leq \sqrt{3}/2$ for the horizon).

Measures of gravitational entropy I. Self-similar spacetimes

We examine the possibility that the gravitational contribution to the entropy of a system can be identified with some measure of the Weyl curvature. In this paper we consider homothetically self-similar spacetimes. These are believed to play an important role in describing the asymptotic properties of more general models. By exploiting their symmetry properties we are able to impose significant restrictions on measures of the Weyl curvature which could reflect the gravitational entropy of a system. In particular, we are able to show, by way of a more general relation, that the most widely used "dimensionless" scalar is \textit{not} a candidate for this measure along homothetic trajectories.

Invariants of the Riemann tensor for Class B Warped Product Spacetimes

We use the computer algebra system \textit{GRTensorII} to examine invariants polynomial in the Riemann tensor for class $B$ warped product spacetimes - those which can be decomposed into the coupled product of two 2-dimensional spaces, one Lorentzian and one Riemannian, subject to the separability of the coupling: $ds^2 = ds_{Σ_1}^2 (u,v) + C(x^γ)^2 ds_{Σ_2}^2 (θ,ϕ)$ with $C(x^γ)^2=r(u,v)^2 w(θ,ϕ)^2$ and $sig(Σ_1)=0, sig(Σ_2)=2ε(ε=\pm 1)$ for class $B_{1}$ spacetimes and $sig(Σ_1)=2ε, sig(Σ_2)=0$ for class $B_{2}$. Although very special, these spaces include many of interest, for example, all spherical, plane, and hyperbolic spacetimes. The first two Ricci invariants along with the Ricci scalar and the real component of the second Weyl invariant $J$ alone are shown to constitute the largest independent set of invariants to degree five for this class. Explicit syzygies are given for other invariants up to this degree. It is argued that this set constitutes the largest functionally independent set to any degree for this class, and some physical consequences of the syzygies are explored.
