Entangled Telecom Photon Generation using Twisted Van der Waals Crystals

Nanoscale quantum light sources are essential building blocks for integrated quantum photonic systems. Here, we report a wavelength-scale entangled-photon source based on van der Waals-engineered NbOBr$_2$, and benchmark its performance for telecom-wavelength quantum light generation. By exploiting the material's second-order nonlinearity, we generate quantum-correlated photon pairs via spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We then use a 90$^{\circ}$ twisted stacking to induce quantum interference in photon-pair generation, yielding polarization-entangled photons. This approach enables tunability of the quantum optical state via control of the excitation laser polarization. We experimentally obtain entanglement fidelities exceeding 95% for Bell states, along with a high coincidence-to-accidental ratio of $\sim$335, and a brightness approximately one order of magnitude higher than recently reported telecom sources based on transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) 2D materials. These results establish twisted van der Waals engineering as a powerful platform for highly tunable, high-brightness quantum light sources at telecom wavelengths.

Two Photon Tripartite Entanglement Transfer via Time-Multiplexed Quantum Walks

Photonic multidimensional quantum networks (MDQN), where individual subsystems are encoded using multiple degrees of freedom and photons, are an emerging platform for quantum algorithms because they offer high scalability. The distribution of non-classical and non-local correlations between the individual subsystems in an MDQN is of fundamental interest for many quantum protocols. Interestingly in an MDQN, the inseparability of two subsystems underlying entanglement can occur both between multiple distinct photons as well as between individual degrees of freedom associated with a single photon. In this work, we investigate the entanglement transfer enabled by the interplay of both entanglement between two distinct photons as well as inseparability between multiple degrees of freedom. For this purpose, we subject one photon of a polarization entangled two-photon pair to a discrete-time quantum walk introducing the position subsystem of the quantum walk as a third subsystem with qudit encoding. Here we study the resulting transfer of entanglement from the polarization degree of freedom, representing qubit encoding, towards the position degree of freedom, representing quidt encoding, via partial state tomography and correlation measurements.

Photonic Entanglement and Polarization Nonclassicality: Two Manifestations, One Nature

We demonstrate in theory and experiment the strict equivalence between nonclassical polarization and the entanglement of indistinguishable photons, thereby unifying these two phenomena that appear dissimilar at first sight. This allows us to analyze nonclassicality and multi-photon entanglement within the same framework. We experimentally verify this double-sided form of quantumness and its independence from the polarization basis, contrasting other notions of coherence that are highly basis-dependent. Our findings show how nonclassical polarization turns out to be equally resourceful for quantum protocols as entanglement, emphasizing its importance in practical applications.

Certifying the Topology of Quantum Networks: Theory and Experiment

Distributed quantum information in networks is paramount for global secure quantum communication. Moreover, it finds applications as a resource for relevant tasks, such as clock synchronization, magnetic field sensing, and blind quantum computation. For quantum network analysis and benchmarking of implementations, however, it is crucial to characterize the topology of networks in a way that reveals the nodes between which entanglement can be reliably distributed. Here, we demonstrate an efficient scheme for this topology certification. Our scheme allows for distinguishing, in a scalable manner, different networks consisting of bipartite and multipartite entanglement sources. It can be applied to semi-device independent scenarios also, where the measurement devices and network nodes are not well characterized and trusted. We experimentally demonstrate our approach by certifying the topology of different six-qubit networks generated with polarized photons, employing active feed-forward and time multiplexing. Our methods can be used for general simultaneous tests of multiple hypotheses with few measurements, being useful for other certification scenarios in quantum technologies.

Direct Measurement of Higher-Order Nonlinear Polarization Squeezing

We report on nonlinear squeezing effects of polarization states of light by harnessing the intrinsic correlations from a polarization-entangled light source and click-counting measurements. Nonlinear Stokes operators are obtained from harnessing the click-counting theory in combination with angular-momentum-type algebras. To quantify quantum effects, theoretical bounds are derived for second- and higher-order moments of nonlinear Stokes operators. The experimental validation of our concept is rendered possible by developing an efficient source, using a spectrally decorrelated type-II phase-matched waveguide inside a Sagnac interferometer. Correlated click statistics and moments are directly obtained from an eight-time-bin quasi-photon-number-resolving detection system. Macroscopic Bell states that are readily available with our source show the distinct nature of nonlinear polarization squeezing in up to eighth-order correlations, matching our theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our data certify nonclassical correlations with high statistical significance, without the need to correct for experimental imperfections and limitations. Also, our nonlinear squeezing can identify nonclassicality of noisy quantum states which is undetectable with the known linear polarization-squeezing criterion.

Scalable generation of multi-photon entangled states by active feed-forward and multiplexing

Multi-photon entangled states of light are key to advancing quantum communication, computation, and metrology. Current methods for building such states are based on stitching together photons from probabilistic sources. The probability of $N$ such sources firing simultaneously decreases exponentially with $N$, imposing severe limitations on the practically achievable number of coincident photons. We tackle this challenge with a quantum interference buffer (QIB), which combines three functionalities: firstly, it stores polarization qubits, enabling the use of polarization-entangled states as resource; secondly, it implements entangled-source multiplexing, greatly enhancing the resource-state generation rates; thirdly, it implements time-multiplexed, on-demand linear optical networks for interfering subsequent states. Using the QIB, we multiplex 21 Bell-state sources and demonstrate a nine-fold enhancement in the generation rate of four-photon GHZ states. The enhancement scales exponentially with the photon number; larger states benefit more strongly. Multiplexed photon entanglement and interference will find diverse applications in quantum photonics, allowing for practical realisations of multi-photon protocols.

Experimental entanglement characterization of two-rebit states

We characterize entanglement subject to its definition over real and complex, composite quantum systems. In particular, a method is established to assess quantum correlations with respect to a selected number system, illuminating the deeply rooted, yet rarely discussed question of why quantum states are described via complex numbers. With our experiment, we then realize two-photon polarization states that are entangled with respect to the notion of two rebits, comprising two two-level systems over real numbers. At the same time, the generated states are separable with respect to two complex qubits. Among other results, we reconstruct the best approximation of the generated states in terms of a real-valued, local expansion and show that this yields an incomplete description of our data. Conversely, the generated states are shown to be fully decomposable in terms of tensor-product states with complex wave functions. Thereby, we probe paradigms of quantum physics with modern theoretical tools and experimental platforms that are relevant for applications in quantum information science and technology and connected to the fundamentals of the quantum description of nature.

High-performance source of spectrally pure, polarization entangled photon pairs based on hybrid integrated-bulk optics

Entangled photon pair sources based on bulk optics are approaching optimal design and implementation, with high state fidelities, spectral purities and heralding efficiencies, but generally low brightness. Integrated entanglement sources, while providing higher brightness and low-power operation, often sacrifice performance in output state quality and coupling efficiency. Here we present a polarization-entangled pair source based on a hybrid approach of waveguiding and bulk optics, addressing every metric simultaneously. We show 96% fidelity to the singlet state, 82% Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility, 43% average Klyshko efficiency, and a high brightness of $2.9\times10^6$ pairs/(mode$\cdot$s$\cdot$mW), while requiring only microwatts of pump power.
