Rosenthal operator spaces

In 1969 Lindenstrauss and Rosenthal showed that if a Banach space is isomorphic to a complemented subspace of an L_p-space, then it is either a script L_p-space or isomorphic to a Hilbert space. This is the motivation of this paper where we study non--Hilbertian complemented operator subspaces of non commutative L_p-spaces and show that this class is much richer than in the commutative case. We investigate the local properties of some new classes of operator spaces for every $2<p< \infty$ which can be considered as operator space analogues of the Rosenthal sequence spaces from Banach space theory, constructed in 1970. Under the usual conditions on the defining sequence sigma we prove that most of these spaces are operator script L_p-spaces, not completely isomorphic to previously known such spaces. However it turns out that some column and row versions of our spaces are not operator script L_p-spaces and have a rather complicated local structure which implies that the Lindenstrauss--Rosenthal alternative does not carry over to the non-commutative case.

The solution to the Maurey extension problem for Banach spaces with the Gordon Lewis property and related structures

The main result of this paper states that if a Banach space X has the property that every bounded operator from an arbitrary subspace of X into an arbitrary Banach space of cotype 2 extends to a bounded operator on X, then $B(\ell_{\infty},X^*)=Π_2(\ell_{\infty},X^*)$. If in addition X has the Gaussian average property, then it is of type 2. This implies that the same conclusion holds if X has the Gordon-Lewis property (in particular X could be a Banach lattice) or if X is isomorphic to a subspace of a Banach lattice of finite cotype, thus solving the Maurey extension property for these classes of spaces. The paper also contains a detailed study of the property of extending operators with values in $\ell_p$-spaces, $1\le p<\infty$.

A Gaussian Average Property for Banach Spaces

In this paper we investigate a Gaussian average property of Banach spaces. This property is weaker than the Gordon Lewis property but closely related to this and other unconditional structures. It is also shown that this property implies that certain Hilbert space valued operators defined on subspaces of the given space can be extended.
