Duality for action bialgebroids

We study the effect of linear duality on action bialgebroids (also known as smash product or scalar extension bialgebroids) and, for those bearing a quantisation nature, the effect of Drinfeld functors underlying the quantum duality principle. By means of various categorical equivalences, it is shown that any braided commutative Yetter-Drinfeld algebra over any bialgebroid is also a braided commutative Yetter-Drinfeld algebra over the respective dual bialgebroid. This implies that the action bialgebroid of the dual exists, which is then proven to be isomorphic, as a bialgebroid, to the dual of the initial action bialgebroid: in short, (linear) duality commutes with the action bialgebroid construction. Similarly, for quantum groupoids to which the Drinfeld duality functors apply and the quantum duality principle holds, these Drinfeld duality functors are shown to commute with the action bialgebroid construction as well.

Hopf bimodules for bialgebroids

Generalising a result for Hopf algebras, we not only define the four possible types of Hopf modules in the bialgebroid setting but also yield the notion of two-sided two-cosided Hopf modules, also known as Hopf bimodules or tetramodules, in this realm. By explicitly formulating a fundamental theorem for Hopf modules via the concept of Hopf-Galois comodules, we prove that the category of Hopf bimodules can be endowed with the structure of a (pre-)braided monoidal category in two different ways, which, in turn, are shown to be both braided monoidally equivalent to the category of Yetter-Drinfel'd modules, that is, to the monoidal centre of the category of left bialgebroid modules or comodules. As an illustration, we discuss relative Hopf bimodules associated to Ehresmann-Schauenburg bialgebroids.

Takeuchi-Schneider equivalence and calculi for homogeneous spaces of Hopf algebroids

We develop a notion of covariant differential calculus for Hopf algebroids. As a byproduct, we prove analogues of the fundamental theorem of Hopf modules and a Takeuchi-Schneider equivalence in the realm of Hopf algebroids. The resulting categorical equivalences enable us to classify covariant calculi on Hopf algebroids and, more in general, covariant calculi on quantum homogeneous spaces in this context, in terms of substructures of the augmentation ideal. This generalises the well-known classification results of Woronowicz and Hermisson. A particular focus is given on examples, including covariant calculi on the Ehresmann-Schauenburg Hopf algebroid of a faithfully flat Hopf-Galois extension, and covariant calculi on scalar extension Hopf algebroids, as well as homogeneous space variants of the latter.

Cyclic duality between BV algebras and BV modules

We show that if an operad is at the same time a cosimplicial object such that the respective structure maps are compatible with the operadic composition in a natural way, then one obtains a Gerstenhaber algebra structure on cohomology, and if the operad is cyclic, even that of a BV algebra. In particular, if a cyclic opposite module over an operad with multiplication is itself a cyclic operad that meets the cosimplicial compatibility conditions, the cohomology of its cyclic dual turns into a BV algebra. This amounts to conditions for when the cyclic dual of a BV module is endowed with a BV algebra structure, a result we exemplify by looking at classical and less classical (co)homology groups in Hopf algebra theory.

Higher structures on homology groups

We dualise the classical fact that an operad with multiplication leads to cohomology groups which form a Gerstenhaber algebra to the context of cooperads: as a result, a cooperad with comultiplication induces a homology theory that is endowed with the structure of a Gerstenhaber coalgebra, that is, it comes with a graded cocommutative coproduct which is compatible with a coantisymmetric cobracket in a dual Leibniz sense. As an application, one obtains Gerstenhaber coalgebra structures on Tor groups over bialgebras or Hopf algebras, as well as on Hochschild homology for Frobenius algebras.

Brackets and products from centres in extension categories

Building on Retakh's approach to Ext groups through categories of extensions, Schwede reobtained the well-known Gerstenhaber algebra structure on Ext groups over bimodules of associative algebras both from splicing extensions (leading to the cup product) and from a suitable loop in the categories of extensions (leading to the Lie bracket). We show how Schwede's construction admits a vast generalisation to general monoidal categories with coefficients of the Ext groups taken in (weak) left and right monoidal (or Drinfel'd) centres. In case of the category of left modules over bialgebroids and coefficients given by commuting pairs of braided (co)commutative (co)monoids in these categorical centres, we provide an explicit description of the algebraic structure obtained this way, and a complete proof that this leads to a Gerstenhaber algebra is then obtained from an operadic approach. This, in particular, considerably generalises the classical construction given by Gerstenhaber himself. Conjecturally, the algebraic structure we describe should produce a Gerstenhaber algebra for an arbitrary monoidal category enriched over abelian groups, but even the bilinearity of the cup product and of the Lie-type bracket defined by the abstract construction in terms of extension categories remain elusive in this general setting.

Centres, trace functors, and cyclic cohomology

We study the biclosedness of the monoidal categories of modules and comodules over a (left or right) Hopf algebroid, along with the bimodule category centres of the respective opposite categories and a corresponding categorical equivalence to anti Yetter-Drinfel'd contramodules and anti Yetter-Drinfel'd modules, respectively. This is directly connected to the existence of a trace functor on the monoidal categories of modules and comodules in question, which in turn allows to recover (or define) cyclic operators enabling cyclic cohomology.

Universal enveloping algebras of Lie-Rinehart algebras: crossed products, connections, and curvature

We extend a theorem, originally formulated by Blattner-Cohen-Montgomery for crossed products arising from Hopf algebras weakly acting on noncommutative algebras, to the realm of left Hopf algebroids. Our main motivation is an application to universal enveloping algebras of projective Lie-Rinehart algebras: for any given curved (resp. flat) connection, that is, a linear (resp. Lie-Rinehart) splitting of a Lie-Rinehart algebra extension, we provide a crossed (resp. smash) product decomposition of the associated universal enveloping algebra, and vice versa. As a geometric example, we describe the associative algebra generated by the invariant vector fields on the total space of a principal bundle as a crossed product of the algebra generated by the vertical ones and the algebra of differential operators on the base.

A noncommutative calculus on the cyclic dual of Ext

We show that if the cochain complex computing Ext groups (in the category of modules over Hopf algebroids) admits a cocyclic structure, then the noncommutative Cartan calculus structure on Tor over Ext dualises in a cyclic sense to a calculus on Coext over Cotor. More precisely, the cyclic duals of the chain resp. cochain spaces computing the two classical derived functors lead to complexes that compute the more exotic ones, giving a cyclic opposite module over an operad with multiplication that induce operations such as a Lie derivative, a cap product (or contraction), and a (cyclic) differential, along with higher homotopy operators defining a noncommutative Cartan calculus up to homotopy. In particular, this allows to recover the classical Cartan calculus from differential geometry or the Chevalley-Eilenberg calculus for Lie(-Rinehart) algebras without any finiteness conditions or the use of topological tensor products.

Cyclic Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomology

We show that the diagonal complex computing the Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomology of a bialgebra (that is, the cohomology theory governing bialgebra deformations) can be given the structure of an operad with multiplication if the bialgebra is a (not necessarily finite dimensional) Hopf algebra with invertible antipode; if the antipode is involutive, the operad is even cyclic. Therefore, the Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomology of any such Hopf algebra carries a Gerstenhaber resp. Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure; in particular, one obtains a cup product and a cyclic boundary B that generate the Gerstenhaber bracket, and that allows to define cyclic Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomology. In case the Hopf algebra in question is finite dimensional, the Gerstenhaber bracket turns out to be zero in cohomology and hence the interesting structure is not given by this e_2-algebra structure but rather by the resulting e_3-algebra structure, which is expressed in terms of the cup product and B.

Higher brackets on cyclic and negative cyclic (co)homology

The purpose of this article is to embed the string topology bracket developed by Chas-Sullivan and Menichi on negative cyclic cohomology groups as well as the dual bracket found by de Thanhoffer de Voelcsey-Van den Bergh on negative cyclic homology groups into the global picture of a noncommutative differential (or Cartan) calculus up to homotopy on the (co)cyclic bicomplex in general, in case a certain Poincare' duality is given. For negative cyclic cohomology, this in particular leads to a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure on the underlying Hochschild cohomology. In the special case in which this BV bracket vanishes, one obtains an e_3-algebra structure on Hochschild cohomology. The results are given in the general and unifying setting of (opposite) cyclic modules over (cyclic) operads.

When Ext is a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra

We show under what conditions the complex computing general Ext-groups carries the structure of a cyclic operad such that Ext becomes a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. This is achieved by transferring cyclic cohomology theories for the dual of a (left) Hopf algebroid to the complex in question, which asks for the notion of contramodules introduced along with comodules by Eilenberg-Moore half a century ago. Another crucial ingredient is an explicit formula for the inverse of the Hopf-Galois map on the dual, by which we illustrate recent categorical results and answer a long-standing open question. As an application, we prove that the Hochschild cohomology of an associative algebra A is Batalin-Vilkovisky if A itself is a contramodule over its enveloping algebra A \otimes A^op. This is, for example, the case for symmetric algebras and Frobenius algebras with semisimple Nakayama automorphism. We also recover the construction for Hopf algebras.

Morita theory for Hopf algebroids, principal bibundles, and weak equivalences

We show that two flat commutative Hopf algebroids are Morita equivalent if and only if they are weakly equivalent and if and only if there exists a principal bibundle connecting them. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture due to Hovey and Strickland. We also prove that principal (left) bundles lead to a bicategory together with a 2-functor from flat Hopf algebroids to trivial principal bundles. This turns out to be the universal solution for 2-functors which send weak equivalences to invertible 1-cells. Our approach can be seen as an algebraic counterpart to Lie groupoid Morita theory.

Duality features of left Hopf algebroids

We explore special features of the pair (U^*, U_*) formed by the right and left dual over a (left) bialgebroid U in case the bialgebroid is, in particular, a left Hopf algebroid. It turns out that there exists a bialgebroid morphism S^* from one dual to another that extends the construction of the antipode on the dual of a Hopf algebra, and which is an isomorphism if U is both a left and right Hopf algebroid. This structure is derived from Phung's categorical equivalence between left and right comodules over U without the need of a (Hopf algebroid) antipode, a result which we review and extend. In the applications, we illustrate the difference between this construction and those involving antipodes and also deal with dualising modules and their quantisations.

Cyclic homology arising from adjunctions

Given a monad and a comonad, one obtains a distributive law between them from lifts of one through an adjunction for the other. In particular, this yields for any bialgebroid the Yetter-Drinfel'd distributive law between the comonad given by a module coalgebra and the monad given by a comodule algebra. It is this self-dual setting that reproduces the cyclic homology of associative and of Hopf algebras in the monadic framework of Boehm and Stefan. In fact, their approach generates two duplicial objects and morphisms between them which are mutual inverses if and only if the duplicial objects are cyclic. A 2-categorical perspective on the process of twisting coefficients is provided and the role of the two notions of bimonad studied in the literature is clarified.

Gerstenhaber and Batalin-Vilkovisky structures on modules over operads

In this article, we show under what additional ingredients a comp (or opposite) module over an operad with multiplication can be given the structure of a cyclic k-module and how the underlying simplicial homology gives rise to a Batalin-Vilkovisky module over the cohomology of the operad. In particular, one obtains a generalised Lie derivative and a generalised (cyclic) cap product that obey a Cartan-Rinehart homotopy formula, and hence yield the structure of a noncommutative differential calculus in the sense of Nest, Tamarkin, Tsygan, and others. Examples include the calculi known for the Hochschild theory of associative algebras, for Poisson structures, but above all the calculus for general left Hopf algebroids with respect to general coefficients (in which the classical calculus of vector fields and differential forms is contained).

Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structures on (Co)Tor and Poisson bialgebroids

In this article, we extend our preceding studies on higher algebraic structures of (co)homology theories defined by a left bialgebroid (U,A). For a braided commutative Yetter-Drinfel'd algebra N, explicit expressions for the canonical Gerstenhaber algebra structure on Ext_U(A,N) are given. Similarly, if (U,A) is a left Hopf algebroid where A is an anti Yetter-Drinfel'd module over U, it is shown that the cochain complex computing Cotor_U(A,N) defines a cyclic operad with multiplication and hence the groups Cotor_U(A,N) form a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. In the second part of this article, Poisson structures and the Poisson bicomplex for bialgebroids are introduced, which simultaneously generalise, for example, classical Poisson as well as cyclic homology. In case the bialgebroid U is commutative, a Poisson structure on U leads to a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure on Tor_U(A,A). As an illustration, we show how this generalises the classical Koszul bracket on differential forms, and conclude by indicating how classical Lie-Rinehart bialgebras (or, geometrically, Lie bialgebroids) arise from left bialgebroids.

Morita base change in Hopf-cyclic (co)homology

In this paper, we establish the invariance of cyclic (co)homology of left Hopf algebroids under the change of Morita equivalent base algebras. The classical result on Morita invariance for cyclic homology of associative algebras appears as a special example of this theory. In our main application we consider the Morita equivalence between the algebra of complex-valued smooth functions on the classical 2-torus and the coordinate algebra of the noncommutative 2-torus with rational parameter. We then construct a Morita base change left Hopf algebroid over this noncommutative 2-torus and show that its cyclic (co)homology can be computed by means of the homology of the Lie algebroid of vector fields on the classical 2-torus.
