Measuring the Superfluid Fraction of an Ultracold Atomic Gas

We propose a method to measure the superfluid fraction of an atomic gas. The method involves the use of a vector potential generated by optical beams with non-zero angular momentum to simulate uniform rotation. The induced change in angular momentum of the atomic gas can be measured spectroscopically. This allows a direct determination of the superfluid fraction.

Skyrmions in the Moore-Read state at nu=5/2

We study charged excitations of the non-abelian Moore-Read liquid at filling factor nu=5/2, allowing for spin depolarization. Using a combination of numerical studies, and taking account of non-zero well widths, we find that at sufficiently low Zeeman energy it is energetically favourable for charge e/4 quasiholes to bind into "skyrmions" of charge e/2. We show that skyrmion formation is further promoted by disorder, and argue that this can lead to a depolarized nu=5/2 ground state in realistic experimental situations. We comment on the consequences for the activated transport.

Composite Fermion Theory for Bosonic Atoms in Optical Lattices

We study the groundstates of cold atomic gases on rotating optical lattices, as described by the Bose-Hubbard model in a uniform effective magnetic field. Mapping the bosons to composite fermions leads to the prediction of quantum Hall fluids that have no counterpart in the continuum. We construct trial wavefunctions for these phases, and perform numerical tests of the predictions of the composite fermion model. Our results establish the existence of strongly correlated phases beyond those in the continuum limit, and provide evidence for a wider scope of the composite fermion approach beyond its application to the lowest Landau-level.

Quantum Noise, Scaling and Domain Formation in a Spinor BEC

In this paper we discuss Bose-Einstein spinor condensates for F=1 atoms in the context of 87Rb, as studied experimentally by the Stamper-Kurn group [Sadler et al. Nature (2006)]. The dynamical quantum fluctuations of a sample that starts as a condensate of N atoms in a pure F=1, m_F = 0 state are described in analogy to the `two-mode squeezing' of quantum optics in terms of an su(1,1) algebra. In this system the initial m_F=0 condensate acts as a source (`pump') for the creation pairs of m_F =+1,-1 atoms. We show that even though the system as a whole is described by a pure state with zero entropy, the reduced density matrix for the m_F = +1 degree of freedom, obtained by tracing out the m_F = -1,0 degrees of freedom, corresponds to a thermal state. Furthermore, these quantum fluctuations of the initial dynamics of the system provide the seeds for the formation of domains of ferromagnetically aligned spins.

Density waves and supersolidity in rapidly rotating atomic Fermi gases

We study theoretically the low-temperature phases of a two-component atomic Fermi gas with attractive s-wave interactions under conditions of rapid rotation. We find that, in the extreme quantum limit, when all particles occupy the lowest Landau level, the normal state is unstable to the formation of "charge" density wave (CDW) order. At lower rotation rates, when many Landau levels are occupied, we show that the low-temperature phases can be supersolids, involving both CDW and superconducting order.

Pseudopotentials for Multi-particle Interactions in the Quantum Hall Regime

In fractional quantum Hall physics, the Hilbert space is projected to a single Landau level and the entire Hamiltonian consists of just the projected inter-electron interaction. Haldane's pseudopotential formalism has been an extremely useful tool both for understanding these interactions, and for understanding the quantum Hall states that result. In the current paper we consider the analogue of this pseudopotential construction that results from general M-body interactions rather than the usual (Coulomb) two-body interaction.

Predicted signatures of p-wave superfluid phases and Majorana zero modes of fermionic atoms in RF absorption

We study the superfluid phases of quasi-2D atomic Fermi gases interacting via a p-wave Feshbach resonance. We calculate the absorption spectra of these phases under a hyperfine transition, for both non-rotating and rotating superfluids. We show that one can identify the different phases of the p-wave superfluid from the absorption spectrum. The absorption spectrum shows clear signatures of the existence of Majorana zero modes at the cores of vortices of the weakly-pairing $p_x+ip_y$ phase.

Quantum and classical surface acoustic wave induced magnetoresistance oscillations in a 2D electron gas

We study theoretically the geometrical and temporal commensurability oscillations induced in the resistivity of 2D electrons in a perpendicular magnetic field by surface acoustic waves (SAWs). We show that there is a positive anisotropic dynamical classical contribution and an isotropic non-equilibrium quantum contribution to the resistivity. We describe how the commensurability oscillations modulate the resonances in the SAW-induced resistivity at multiples of the cyclotron frequency. We study the effects of both short-range and long-range disorder on the resistivity corrections for both the classical and quantum non-equilibrium cases. We predict that the quantum correction will give rise to zero-resistance states with associated geometrical commensurability oscillations at large SAW amplitude for sufficiently large inelastic scattering times. These zero resistance states are qualitatively similar to those observed under microwave illumination, and their nature depends crucially on whether the disorder is short- or long-range. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for current and future experiments on two dimensional electron gases.

Quantum and Classical Dissipative Effects on Tunnelling in Quantum Hall Bilayers

We discuss the interplay between transport and dissipation in quantum Hall bilayers. We show that quantum effects are relevant in the pseudospin picture of these systems, leading either to direct tunnelling currents or to quantum dissipative processes that damp oscillations around the ground state. These quantum effects have their origins in resonances of the classical spin system.

Dissipation and Tunnelling in Quantum Hall Bilayers

We discuss the interplay between transport and intrinsic dissipation in quantum Hall bilayers, within the framework of a simple thought experiment. We compute, for the first time, quantum corrections to the semiclassical dynamics of this system. This allows us to re-interpret tunnelling measurements on these systems. We find a strong peak in the zero-temperature tunnelling current that arises from the decay of Josephson-like oscillations into incoherent charge fluctuations. In the presence of an in-plane field, resonances in the tunnelling current develop an asymmetric lineshape.

Surface acoustic wave induced magnetoresistance oscillations in a 2D electron gas

We study the geometrical commensurability oscillations imposed onto the resistivity of 2D electrons in a perpendicular magnetic field by a propagating surface acoustic wave (SAW). We show that, for $ω<ω_{c}$, this effect is composed of an anisotropic dynamical classical contribution increasing the resistivity and the non-equilibrium quantum contribution isotropically decreasing resistivity, and we predict the appearance of zero-resistance states associated with geometrical commensurability at large SAW amplitude. We also describe how the commensurability oscillations modulate the resonances in the SAW-induced resistivity at multiples of the cyclotron frequency.

Derivative relation for thermopower in the quantum Hall regime

Recently, Tieke et al (to be published in PRL) have observed the relation S_{yx} = alpha B dS_{xx}/dB for the components of the thermopower tensor in the quantum Hall regime, where alpha is a constant and B is the magnetic field. Simon and Halperin (PRL 73, 3278 (1994)) have suggested that an analogous relation observed for the resistivity tensor R_{xx} = αB dR_{xy}/dB can be explained with a model of classical transport in an inhomogeneous medium where the local Hall resistivity is a function of position and the local dissipative resistivity is a small constant. In the present paper, we show that this new thermopower relation can be explained with a similar model.
