Reconstructing sign-switching dark energy histories: Scalar-field regularity, conditional potential comparison, and representative dynamics

Phenomenologically similar sign-switching dark-energy histories need not have comparable scalar-field realizations. We reconstruct minimally coupled scalars with fixed kinetic sign for three prescribed histories: the error-function model (ECDM), the compact smooth-step model (SSCDM), and the ladder-like model (L$Λ$CDM). Continuous negative-to-positive density crossings select the phantom branch. ECDM yields a smooth on-shell potential at every finite redshift; its equation-of-state pole at the density zero is only a ratio singularity. Exact SSCDM has a regular trajectory but a $C^1$, non-$C^2$ endpoint potential, $V-V_e\propto|ϕ-ϕ_e|^{4/3}$. Its non-Lipschitz force permits delayed departures from frozen plateaus, so the reconstructed potential and plateau data do not uniquely generate the prescribed history. The exact Ladder requires distributional kinetic stress and has no ordinary classical realization in the adopted one-field action. In conditional synthetic comparisons, the sigmoid--Gaussian family ranks highest for ECDM and the generalized axion-like family for SSCDM, although the fitted axion exponents $n<1/2$ imply a divergent endpoint force. Representative regular forward solutions exhibit negative-to-positive scalar-density crossings, with the potential zero preceding the density zero. In a closure test, unretuned evolution of the top-ranked ECDM template tracks the target approximately, $\max|Δ\widetildeΩ_ϕ|\simeq0.16$. Closure fails structurally for compact SSCDM: no potential with a locally Lipschitz force can reproduce its exact finite-duration frozen plateaus from exactly frozen initial data. Field-map existence, invertibility, and endpoint regularity must be assessed before interpreting a phenomenological history as scalar dynamics. The phantom action is used only as a homogeneous effective proxy.

Action-selected currents and a singular conservation closure in two-fluid energy--momentum-squared cosmology

In multi-fluid, matter-type gravity, the Bianchi identity constrains the divergence of the total effective stress tensor but does not, by itself, determine the currents assigned to its constituent sectors. Those currents are selected only after the off-shell matter action and equations, or an additional phenomenological closure, have been specified. We formulate this distinction and examine a spatially flat two-fluid background inspired by scale-independent EMSG. The case study combines an algebraic perfect-fluid prescription with a vanishing contracted-Hessian contribution, together with separate conservation of the total conventional and modification sectors. Because neither assumption is derived here from a concrete off-shell fluid action, the resulting system is an effective background closure rather than a microscopic EMSG model. For unequal EoS and every $α\ne0$, the closure yields a Barrow-Clifton system whose transfer coefficients depend on $(w_1,w_2)$ but not on $α$. Hence the nonzero-$α$ family is singular: its $α\to0$ limit does not recover the uncoupled GR conservation laws. We solve the two density eigenmodes and derive the associated modified Liénard equation for $H$. We also prove that the discriminant governing rank loss of the density-reconstruction map is strictly positive for every finite $w_1\ne w_2$. Thus each genuinely quadratic case has two distinct real rank-degenerate couplings. Exact vacuum and stiff-fluid families illustrate modal cancellation. When today's conventional densities are positive, the intervals on which both remain positive generally terminate at finite endpoints in the parameter ranges analyzed explicitly. These results provide a consistency diagnostic for separating action-level predictions from closure artifacts in multi-fluid, matter-type gravity; they do not establish an observationally viable EMSG model.

Dark Energy with Constant Inertial Mass Density: Updated Constraints and Curvature-Induced Sign Transitions in $ρ_{\rm DE}$ and $ρ_{\rm DE}+p_{\rm DE}$

We present updated observational constraints on the simple-gDE model, characterized by a constant inertial mass density (IMD) $ρ_{\rm DE}+p_{\rm DE}$,which belongs to the broader graduated dark energy family, and compare its cosmological implications with those of the $w$CDM and the $Λ$CDM models. This parametrization provides a physically motivated, one-parameter extension of $Λ$CDM, perspective on DE dynamics beyond the usual equation-of-state approach. We use the newly released DESI DR2 BAO data in combination with either CMB measurements from Planck 2018 or late-time probes, CC and the Pantheon+ SNe Ia sample, considered both with and without SH0ES calibration in this analysis. The data favor a small positive IMD, and Bayesian evidence indicates that the models remain statistically indistinguishable within spatially flat scenarios. Consequently, none of these models exhibits a sign transition in the DE energy density, and no improvement in $H_0$ tension. Allowing spatial curvature qualitatively enlarges the phenomenology of the dark sector. In particular, the interplay between spatial curvature and a nonzero IMD permits sign transitions in both the effective dark-energy density and the IMD during cosmic evolution. For the BAO+CC+SN+SH0ES dataset, the $o$Simple-gDE model yields a transition redshift $z^\dagger = 1.51^{+0.68}_{-0.34}$, while the crossing of the Null Energy Condition boundary (NECB), defined by $ρ_{\rm DE}+p_{\rm DE}=0$, occurs at $z_{\rm NECB}=2.36^{+1.48}_{-1.48}$. The model is statistically favored over $oΛ$CDM and $ow$CDM. These results highlight the potential role of IMD as a fundamental parameter in DE phenomenology and demonstrate that geometric effects, such as spatial curvature, can reveal dynamical features of the dark sector that remain hidden within the spatially flat $Λ$CDM framework.

Unexplored regions in teleparallel $f(T)$ gravity: Sign-changing dark energy density

While $f(T)$ gravity has shown considerable potential in addressing cosmological tensions, we explore previously overlooked solution spaces that hold further promise. We examine the case where the customary assumption of a strictly positive effective DE density may not apply, offering new possibilities. Focusing on $f(T) = T e^{T_*/T}$, we investigate cosmological solutions parametrized by the parameter $β= T_*/T_0$. This parameter uniquely determines $Ω_{\rm m0}$, and its sign plays a crucial role in characterizing deviations from the $Λ$CDM. We elaborate on the structural asymmetry between the positive- and negative-$β$ branches: while the $β_{+}$ leads to dynamics with modest departures from $Λ$CDM, the $β_{-}$ yields more pronounced and nontrivial deviations. Despite these deviations, the negative-$β$ branch can remain consistent with local gravity constraints through an effective chameleon-like mechanism. We also examine the model in the context of dynamical DE. Ensuring consistency with CMB data, the widely studied $β_{+}$ exhibits phantom behavior, while the previously overlooked $β_{-}$ features a sign-changing DE density that transitions smoothly from negative to positive values at $z_{\dagger} \sim 1.5$. Though the sign-changing DE leads to a larger-than-expected enhancement, we extend the analysis by incorporating $Λ$. This extension broadens the solution space consistent with the SH0ES measurement while maintaining consistency with CMB. Additionally, it introduces richer phenomenological possibilities, including the potential moderation or cessation of cosmic acceleration at very low redshifts, aligning with recent observational analyses, such as those from DESI BAO data. Our findings suggest that existing $f(T)$ models, as well as $f(Q)$ models, should be revisited in light of the novel theoretical insights presented here.

Role of internal space correlations in the dynamics of a higher-dimensional Bianchi type-I universe: shear scalar and Hubble parameter perspectives

We investigate exact solutions of the Einstein field equations in higher-dimensional, spatially homogeneous Bianchi type-I spacetimes, introducing a real parameter $λ$ that correlates the expansion rates of external and internal spaces. Extending beyond Robertson--Walker spacetime, our approach includes positive and negative correlations, suggesting a broader and isotropic/anisotropic cosmological model space. Positively correlated dimensions manifest as a cosmological constant at late times, while at early times, they mimic stiff-fluid-like dark energy that dilutes faster than radiation, paralleling early dark energy models. This suggests a pathway for alleviating the Hubble tension by tailoring higher-dimensional dynamics to reduce the sound horizon. When anisotropic expansion is allowed, these models achieve isotropization more efficiently than predicted by Wald's cosmic no-hair theorem. Negative correlations, in contrast, yield a higher-dimensional steady-state universe where the shear scalar remains constant, effectively emulating a negative cosmological constant. These distinct behaviors arise from a simple signature change: positive correlation accelerates shear scalar decay, while negative correlation stabilizes it. We demonstrate that the solutions admit analytic continuation from the Lorentzian to Euclidean regime ($t \to -iτ$), revealing a wormhole-like topology that connects two asymptotic regions via a throat, with $λ\to -λ$.

Equivalence of matter-type modified gravity theories to general relativity with nonminimal matter interaction

In this study, we first establish that gravity models incorporating matter-related terms, such as $f(\mathcal{L}_{\rm m})$, $f(g_{μν} T^{μν})$, and $f(T_{μν} T^{μν})$, into the usual matter Lagrangian density $\mathcal{L}_{\rm m}$, are equivalent to general relativity with nonminimal matter interactions. Through the redefinition $\mathcal{L}_{\rm m}+f \rightarrow \mathcal{L}_{\rm m}^{\rm tot}$, these models are exactly GR, yet the usual material field $T_{μν}$ and its accompanying partner, the modification field $T_{μν}^{\rm mod}$, engage in nonminimal interactions. Specifically, $\nabla^μT_{μν}=-Q_ν=-\nabla^μT_{μν}^{\rm mod}$, where $Q_ν$ is the interaction kernel that governs the rate of energy transfer. Our focus narrows on the specific model of $f(T_{μν} T^{μν})$, known as Energy-Momentum Squared Gravity, where the usual material field $T_{μν}$ is accompanied by an \textit{energy-momentum squared field} (EMSF), $T_{μν}^{\rm emsf}$, along with a sui generis nonminimal interaction between them. We demonstrate that a particular $T_{μν}^{\rm emsf}$ can be introduced by \textit{removing} $\frac{\partial^2 \mathcal{L}_{\rm m}}{\partial g^{μν} \partial g^{σε}}$ (the new term emerging in models that incorporate scalars formed from $T_{μν}$), thanks to the freedom in determining the interaction kernel, but this approach compromises the Lagrangian formulation of EMSG. Additionally, we address the ambiguities regarding the perfect fluid stemming from this new term. We show the proper way of calculating this term for a perfect fluid, revealing that it is indeed non-zero, contrary to common assumption in the literature. Finally, we re-examine cosmological models within the realm of EMSG, offering new insights into the applicability and interpretation of our findings in EMSG and similar theoretical frameworks.
