Charge and Color Breaking Constraints in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The scalar potential of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) admits the existence of vacua with non-vanishing expectation values of electrically and color charged fields. If such minima are deep enough, the physical electroweak vacuum is rendered unstable by quantum tunneling. By comparing the lifetime of the electroweak vacuum with the age of the universe, the MSSM parameter space can be constrained. Furthermore, the appearance of charge and color breaking minima associated with the stop sector is strongly correlated with the Higgs mass, which has been recently measured at the Large Hadron Collider. We carry out a metastability analysis in the stop sector of the MSSM, improving upon previous results. We exclude parts of the parameter space allowed by the Higgs mass measurement.

Dark Matter Antibaryons from a Supersymmetric Hidden Sector

The cosmological origin of both dark and baryonic matter can be explained through a unified mechanism called hylogenesis where baryon and antibaryon number are divided between the visible sector and a GeV-scale hidden sector, while the Universe remains net baryon symmetric. The "missing" antibaryons, in the form of exotic hidden states, are the dark matter. We study model-building, cosmological, and phenomenological aspects of this scenario within the framework of supersymmetry, which naturally stabilizes the light hidden sector and electroweak mass scales. Inelastic dark matter scattering on visible matter destroys nucleons, and nucleon decay searches offer a novel avenue for the direct detection of the hidden antibaryonic dark matter sea.

Binding energy of the positronium negative ion via dimensional scaling

We determine the binding energy of the negative positronium ion in the limits of one spatial dimension and of infinitely many dimensions. The numerical result for the one-dimensional ground state energy seems to be a rational number, suggesting the existence of an analytical solution for the wave function. We construct a perturbation expansion around the infinitely-dimensional limit to compute an accurate estimate for the physical three-dimensional case. That result for the energy agrees to five significant figures with variational studies.
