Statistical models of barren plateaus and anti-concentration of Pauli observables

We introduce statistical models for each of the three main sources of barren plateaus: non-locality of the observable, entanglement of the initial state, and circuit expressivity. For instance, non-local observables are modeled by random Pauli operators, which lead to barren plateaus with probability exponentially close to one. These models are complementary to the conventional deterministic ones, and often simpler to analyze. Using this framework, we show that in the barren plateau regime any two Pauli observables are anti-concentrated with high probability in the following sense. While each of the observables is localized in an exponentially small parameter subspace, these regions are essentially independent, so that their overlap is yet exponentially smaller than each subspace. This invites to rethink the structure of quantum landscapes with barren plateaus and approaches to their optimization, including warm-start strategies.

On the Role of Longitudinal Currents in Radiating Systems of Charges

The time derivative of the charge density is linked to the current density by the continuity equation. However, it features only the longitudinal part of a current density, which is known to produce no radiation. This fact usually remains unnoticed though it poses a seemingly serious paradox, suggesting that the temporal variation of a charge density should be also irrelevant for radiation. We resolve this paradox by showing that the effective longitudinal currents are not spatially confined even when the time-dependent charge density that generates them is. This enforces the co-existence of the complementary (i.e. transverse) part of the current density through the Helmholtz decomposition. We illustrate the mechanics of the underlying non-locality of the Helmholtz decomposition in the case of a dynamic electric dipole, discussing its practical implication for underwater antenna communications. More generally, we explain the role of the Helmholtz decomposition in shaping the structure of the conventional multipole expansion.

Analytic conformal bootstrap and Virasoro primary fields in the Ashkin-Teller model

We revisit the critical two-dimensional Ashkin-Teller model, i.e. the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold of the compactified free boson CFT at $c=1$. We solve the model on the plane by computing its three-point structure constants and proving crossing symmetry of four-point correlation functions. We do this not only for affine primary fields, but also for Virasoro primary fields, i.e. higher twist fields and degenerate fields. This leads us to clarify the analytic properties of Virasoro conformal blocks and fusion kernels at $c=1$. We show that blocks with a degenerate channel field should be computed by taking limits in the central charge, rather than in the conformal dimension. In particular, Al. Zamolodchikov's simple explicit expression for the blocks that appear in four-twist correlation functions is only valid in the non-degenerate case: degenerate blocks, starting with the identity block, are more complicated generalized theta functions.

Liouville perturbation theory for Laughlin state and Coulomb gas

We consider the generating functional (logarithm of the normalization factor) of the Laughlin state on a sphere, in the limit of a large number of particles $N$. The problem is reformulated in terms of a perturbative expansion of a 2d QFT, resembling the Liouville field theory. We develop an analog of the Liouville loop perturbation theory, which allows us to quantitatively study the generating functional for an arbitrary smooth metric and an inhomogeneous magnetic field beyond the leading orders in large $N$.

Analytic properties of the Virasoro modular kernel

On the space of generic conformal blocks the modular transformation of the underlying surface is realized as a linear integral transformation. We show that the analytic properties of conformal block implied by Zamolodchikov's formula are shared by the kernel of the modular transformation and illustrate this by explicit computation in the case of the one-point toric conformal block.

On new exact conformal blocks and Nekrasov functions

Recently, an intriguing family of the one-point toric conformal blocks AGT related to the $\mathcal{N}=2^*\,\, SU(2)$ Nekrasov functions was discovered by M. Beccaria and G. Macorini. Members of the family are distinguished by having only finite amount of poles as functions of the intermediate dimension/v.e.v. in gauge theory. Another remarkable property is that these conformal blocks/Nekrasov functions can be found in closed form to all orders in the coupling expansion. In the present paper we use Zamolodchikov's recurrence equation to systematically account for these exceptional conformal blocks. We conjecture that the family is infinite-dimensional and describe the corresponding parameter set. We further apply the developed technique to demonstrate that the four-point spheric conformal blocks feature analogous exact expressions. We also study the modular transformations of the finite-pole blocks.

On modular transformations of non-degenerate toric conformal blocks

We derive and solve the difference equations on the toric modular kernel following from the consistency relations in the fusion algebra. The result is explicit and simple series expansion for the toric modular kernel of non-degenerate Virasoro conformal blocks. We show that this expansion is equivalent to the celebrated integral representation due to B. Ponsot and J. Teschner. We also interpret obtained series representation as a non-perturbative expansion and note that this raises further questions.

On fusion kernel in Liouville theory

We study fusion kernel for non-degenerate conformal blocks in Liouville theory as a solution to the difference equations originating from the pentagon identity. We suggest an approach to these equations based on 'non-perturbative' series expansion which allows to calculate the fusion kernel iteratively. We also find the exact solutions for the cases when the central charge is $c=1+6(b-b^{-1})^2$ and $b~\in \mathbb{N}$. For $c = 1$ our result reproduces the formula, obtained earlier from analytical continuation via Painlevé equation. However, in our case it appears in a significantly simplified form.
