Plasmonic absorption properties of bimetallic metamaterials

We demonstrate polarization controlled absorption in plasmonic bimetallic metamaterials. We fabricate and experimentally characterize Au/Ni ring resonator arrays, where by varying the wavelength and polarization of the incident wave, local electromagnetic fields and dissipation can be suppressed or enhanced in the Au and Ni areas of the rings.

Wavevector Selective Metasurfaces and Tunnel Vision Filters

Metasurfaces offer unprecedented flexibility in the design and control of light propagation, replacing bulk optical components and exhibiting exotic optical effects. One of the basic properties of the metasurfaces, which renders them as frequency selective surfaces, is the ability to transmit or reflect radiation within a narrow spectral band that can be engineered on demand. Here we introduce and demonstrate experimentally in the THz domain the concept of wavevector selective surfaces -- metasurfaces transparent only within a narrow range of light propagation directions operating effectively as tunnel vision filters. Practical implementations of the new concept include applications in wavefront manipulation, observational instruments, vision and free-space communication in light-scattering environments, as well as passive camouflage.

Optical generation of intense ultrashort magnetic pulses at the nanoscale

Generating, controlling, and sensing strong magnetic fields at ever shorter time and length scales is important for both fundamental solid-state physics and technological applications such as magnetic data recording. Here, we propose a scheme for producing strong ultrashort magnetic pulses localized at the nanoscale. We show that a bimetallic nanoring illuminated by femtosecond laser pulses responds with transient thermoelectric currents of picosecond duration, which in turn induce Tesla-scale magnetic fields in the ring cavity. Our method provides a practical way of generating intense nanoscale magnetic fields with great potential for materials characterization, terahertz radiation generation, and data storage applications.

Nonlinear graphene metamaterial

We demonstrate that the broadband nonlinear optical response of graphene can be resonantly enhanced by more than an order of magnitude through hybridization with a plasmonic metamaterial, while retaining an ultrafast nonlinear response time of ~1 ps. Transmission modulation close to ~1% is seen at a pump uence of ~0.03 mJ/cm^2 at the wavelength of ~1600 nm. This approach allows to engineer and enhance graphene's nonlinearity within a broad wavelength range enabling applications in optical switching, mode-locking and pulse shaping.

Localization of Electromagnetic Fields in Disordered Fano Metamaterials

We present the first study of disorder in planar metamaterials consisting of strongly interacting metamolecules, where coupled electric dipole and magnetic dipole modes give rise to a Fano-type resonant response and show that positional disorder leads to light localization inherently linked to collective magnetic dipole excitations. We demonstrate that the magnetic excitation persists in disordered arrays and results in the formation of "magnetic hot-spots".

Controlling the Colour of Metals: Intaglio and Bas-Relief Metamaterials

The fabrication of indented ('intaglio') or raised ('bas-relief') sub-wavelength metamaterial patterns on a metal surface provides a mechanism for changing and controlling the colour of the metal without employing any form of chemical surface modification, thin-film coating or diffraction effects. We show that a broad range of colours can be achieved by varying the structural parameters of metamaterial designs to tune absorption resonances. This novel approach to the 'structural colouring' of pure metals offers great versatility and scalability for both aesthetic (e.g. jewellery design) and functional (e.g. sensors, optical modulators) applications. We focus here on visible colour but the concept can equally be applied to the engineering of metallic spectral response in other electromagnetic domains.

Giant nonlinearity of carbon nanotubes in a photonic metamaterial

Metamaterials, artificial media structured on the subwavelength scale offer a rich paradigm for developing unique photonic functionalities ranging from negative index of refraction and directionally asymmetric transmission to slowing light. Here we demonstrate that a combination of carbon nanotubes with a photonic metamaterial offers a new paradigm for the development of nonlinear media with exceptionally strong ultrafast nonlinear response invaluable in photonic applications. It is underpinned by strong coupling between weakly radiating Fano-type resonant plasmonic modes and the excitonic response of single-walled semiconductor carbon nanotubes. Using a "combinatorial" approach to material discovery we show that the optical response of such a composite system can be tailored and optimized by metamaterial design.

Breakdown of Long-Range Correlations in Heart Rate Fluctuations During Meditation

The average wavelet coefficient method is applied to investigate the scaling features of heart rate variability during meditation, a state of induced mental relaxation. While periodicity dominates the behavior of the heart rate time series at short intervals, the meditation induced correlations in the signal become significantly weaker at longer time scales. Further study of these correlations by means of an entropy analysis in the natural time domain reveals that the induced mental relaxation introduces substantial loss of complexity at larger scales, which indicates a change in the physiological mechanisms involved.

Coherent and incoherent metamaterials and the order-disorder transitions

We demonstrate a new class of "coherent" metamaterials, where a regular ensemble of meta-molecules shows a collective, i.e. coherent, narrow band resonant response, while disordering the ensemble leads to broadening and eventually disappearance of the resonance. We draw parallels between the observed collective behavior of meta-molecules and the Mossbauer effect and notice certain remarkable similarities with the phase transitions of ferromagnetic systems.

Markovian Memory Embedded in Two-State Natural Processes

Markovian memory embedded in a binary system is shaping its evolution on the basis of its current state and introduces either clustering or dispersion of binary states. The consequence is directly observed in the lengthening or shortening of the runs of the same binary state and also in the way the proportion of a state within a sequence of state measurements scatters about its true average, which is quantifiable through the Markovian self-transition probabilities. It is shown that the Markovian memory can even imitate the evolution of a random process, regarding the long-term behavior of the frequencies of its binary states. This situation occurs when the associated binary state self-transition probabilities are balanced. To exemplify the behavior of Markovian memory, two natural processes are selected. The first example is studying the preferences of nonhuman troglodytes regarding handedness. The Markovian model in this case assesses the extent of influence two contiguous individuals may have on each other. The other example studies the hindering of the quantum state transitions that rapid state measurements introduce, known as the Quantum Zeno effect (QZE). Based on the current methodology, simulations of the experimentally observed clustering of states allowed for the estimation of the two self-transition probabilities in this quantum system. Through these, one can appreciate how the particular hindering of the evolution of a quantum state may have originated. The aim of this work is to illustrate as merits of the current mathematical approach, its wide range applicability and its potential to provide a variety of information regarding the dynamics of the studied process.
