Classical limit of the Pauli-Fierz dynamics

We study the Schrödinger evolution generated by the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian, a model for nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics, in the classical limit $\hbar \rightarrow 0$. In this regime, we rigorously derive the Newton-Maxwell equations of classical electrodynamics as effective dynamics approximating the time evolution. Our result complements prior work by an alternative derivation that provides explicit estimates on the rate of convergence, justifying the validity of the approximation for a special class of initial data.

The Semi-Classical Limit from the Dirac Equation with Time-Dependent External Electromagnetic Field to Relativistic Vlasov Equations

We prove the mathematically rigorous (semi-)classical limit $\hbar \to 0$ of the Dirac equation with time-dependent external electromagnetic field to relativistic Vlasov equations with Lorentz force for electrons and positrons. In this limit antimatter and spin remain as intrinsically relativistic effects on a classical level. Our global-in-time results use Wigner transforms and a Lagrange multiplier viewpoint of the matrix-valued Wigner equation. In particular, we pass to the limit in the ''full" Wigner matrix equation without projecting on the eigenspaces of the matrix-valued symbol of the Dirac operator. In the limit, the Lagrange multiplier maintains the constraint that the Wigner measure and the symbol of the Dirac operator commute and vanishes when projected on the electron or positron eigenspace. This is a different approach to the problem as discussed in [P. Gérard, P. Markowich, N.J. Mauser, F. Poupaud: Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 50(4):323--379, 1997], where the limit is taken in the projected Wigner equation. By explicit calculation of the remainder term in the expansion of the Moyal product we are able to generalize to time-dependent potentials with much less regularity. We use uniform $L^2$ bounds for the Wigner transform, which are only possible for a special class of mixed states as initial data.

Derivation of the Maxwell-Schrödinger and Vlasov-Maxwell Equations from Non-Relativistic QED

We study the spinless Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian in a semiclassical mean-field limit of many fermions. For appropriate initial conditions, we prove, in the trace norm topology of reduced density matrices, that the many-body quantum state converges to a tensor product of a semiclassically structured Slater determinant and a coherent photon state. These evolve according to a fermionic variant of the Maxwell-Schrödinger equations. By combining this result with [arXiv:2308.16074] through a suitable regularization of the initial data, we further show that, in the limit of large particle number, the dynamics of the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian can be approximately described by the non-relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell system for extended charges.

A Note on the Binding Energy for Bosons in the Mean-field Limit

We consider a gas of N weakly interacting bosons in the ground state. Such gases exhibit Bose-Einstein condensation. The binding energy is defined as the energy it takes to remove one particle from the gas. In this article, we prove an asymptotic expansion for the binding energy, and compute the first orders explicitly for the homogeneous gas. Our result addresses in particular a conjecture by Nam [Lett. Math. Phys., 108(1):141--159, 2018], and provides an asymptotic expansion of the ionization energy of bosonic atoms.

Derivation of the Vlasov-Maxwell system from the Maxwell-Schrödinger equations with extended charges

We consider the Maxwell-Schrödinger equations in the Coulomb gauge describing the interaction of extended fermions with their self-generated electromagnetic field. They heuristically emerge as mean-field equations from non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics in a mean-field limit of many fermions. In the semiclassical regime, we establish the convergence of the Maxwell-Schrödinger equations for extended charges towards the non-relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell dynamics and provide explicit estimates on the accuracy of the approximation. To this end, we build a well-posedness and regularity theory for the Maxwell-Schrödinger equations and for the Vlasov-Maxwell system for extended charges.

Propagation of moments for large data and semiclassical limit to the relativistic Vlasov equation

We investigate the semiclassical limit from the semi-relativistic Hartree-Fock equation describing the time evolution of a system of fermions in the mean-field regime with a relativistic dispersion law and interacting through a singular potential of the form $K(x)=γ\frac{1}{|x|^a}$, $a \in \left( \max \left\{ \frac{d}{2} -2 , - 1 \right\}, d-2 \right]$, $d\in\{2,3\}$ and $γ\in\mathbb{R}$, with the convention $K(x)=γ\log(|x|)$ if $a=0$. For mixed states, we show convergence in Schatten norms with explicit rate towards the Weyl transform of a solution to the relativistic Vlasov equation with singular potentials, thus generalizing [J. Stat. Phys. 172 (2), 398--433 (2018)] where the case of smooth potentials has been treated. Moreover, we provide new results on the well-posedness theory of the relativistic Vlasov equations with singular interactions.

Ground state of Bose gases interacting through singular potentials

We consider a system of $N$ bosons on the three-dimensional unit torus. The particles interact through repulsive pair interactions of the form $N^{3β-1} v (N^βx)$ for $β\in (0,1)$. We prove the next order correction to Bogoliubov theory for the ground state and the ground state energy.

Renormalized Bogoliubov Theory for the Nelson Model

We consider the time evolution of the renormalized Nelson model, which describes $N$ bosons linearly coupled to a quantized scalar field, in the mean-field limit of many particles $N\gg 1$ with coupling constant proportional to $N^{-1/2}$. First, we show that initial states exhibiting Bose-Einstein condensation for the particles and approximating a coherent state for the quantum field retain their structure under the many-body time evolution. Concretely, the dynamics of the reduced densities are approximated by solutions of two coupled PDEs, the Schrödinger-Klein-Gordon equations. Second, we construct a renormalized Bogoliubov evolution that describes the quantum fluctuations around the Schrödinger-Klein-Gordon equations. This evolution is used to extend the approximation of the evolved many-body state to the full norm topology. In summary, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the Nelson model that reveals the role of renormalization in the mean-field Bogoliubov theory.

Asymptotic analysis of the weakly interacting Bose gas: A collection of recent results and applications

We consider a gas of N bosons with interactions in the mean-field scaling regime. We review a recent proof of the asymptotic expansion of its spectrum and eigenstates and two applications of this result, namely the derivation of an Edgeworth expansion for fluctuations of one-body operators and the computation of the binding energy of an inhomogeneous Bose gas to any order. Finally, we collect related results for the dynamics of the weakly interacting Bose gas and for the regularized Nelson model.

Norm approximation for the Fröhlich dynamics in the mean-field regime

We study the time evolution of the Fröhlich Hamiltonian in a mean-field limit in which many particles weakly couple to the quantized phonon field. Assuming that the particles are initially in a Bose-Einstein condensate and that the excitations of the phonon field are initially in a coherent state we provide an effective dynamics which approximates the time evolved many-body state in norm, provided that the number of particles is large. The approximation is given by a product state which evolves according to the Landau-Pekar equations and which is corrected by a Bogoliubov dynamics. In addition, we extend the results from [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 240, 383-417 (2021)] about the approximation of the time evolved many-body state in trace-norm topology to a larger class of many-body initial states with an improved rate of convergence.

Derivation of the Maxwell-Schrödinger Equations: A note on the infrared sector of the radiation field

We slightly extend prior results about the derivation of the Maxwell-Schrödinger equations from the bosonic Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian. More concretely, we show that the findings from [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 52(5), 4900-4936 (2020)] about the coherence of the quantized electromagnetic field also hold for soft photons with small energies. This is achieved with the help of an estimate from [arXiv:2202.05015] which proves that the domain of the number of photon operator is invariant during the time evolution generated by the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian.

The Landau-Pekar equations: Adiabatic theorem and accuracy

We prove an adiabatic theorem for the Landau-Pekar equations. This allows us to derive new results on the accuracy of their use as effective equations for the time evolution generated by the Fröhlich Hamiltonian with large coupling constant $α$. In particular, we show that the time evolution of Pekar product states with coherent phonon field and the electron being trapped by the phonons is well approximated by the Landau-Pekar equations until times short compared to $α^2$.

Bogoliubov Dynamics and Higher-order Corrections for the Regularized Nelson Model

We study the time evolution of the Nelson model in a mean-field limit in which N non-relativistic bosons weakly couple (w.r.t. the particle number) to a positive or zero mass quantized scalar field. Our main result is the derivation of the Bogoliubov dynamics and higher-order corrections. More precisely, we prove the convergence of the approximate wave function to the many-body wave function in norm, with a convergence rate proportional to the number of corrections taken into account in the approximation. We prove an analogous result for the unitary propagator. As an application, we derive a simple system of PDEs describing the time evolution of the first- and second-order approximation to the one-particle reduced density matrices of the particles and the quantum field, respectively.

Landau-Pekar equations and quantum fluctuations for the dynamics of a strongly coupled polaron

We consider the Fröhlich Hamiltonian with large coupling constant $α$. For initial data of Pekar product form with coherent phonon field and with the electron minimizing the corresponding energy, we provide a norm approximation of the evolution, valid up to times of order $α^2$. The approximation is given in terms of a Pekar product state, evolved through the Landau-Pekar equations, corrected by a Bogoliubov dynamics taking quantum fluctuations into account. This allows us to show that the Landau-Pekar equations approximately describe the evolution of the electron- and one-phonon reduced density matrices under the Fröhlich dynamics up to times of order $α^2$.

Derivation of the Landau-Pekar equations in a many-body mean-field limit

We consider the Fröhlich Hamiltonian in a mean-field limit where many bosonic particles weakly couple to the quantized phonon field. For large particle number and suitably small coupling, we show that the dynamics of the system is approximately described by the Landau-Pekar equations. These describe a Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a classical polarization field, whose dynamics is effected by the condensate, i.e., the back-reaction of the phonons that are created by the particles during the time evolution is of leading order.

Mean-field Dynamics for the Nelson Model with Fermions

We consider the Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoff, which describes the interaction between non-relativistic particles and a positive or zero mass quantized scalar field. We take the non-relativistic particles to obey Fermi statistics and discuss the time evolution in a mean-field limit of many fermions. In this case, the limit is known to be also a semiclassical limit. We prove convergence in terms of reduced density matrices of the many-body state to a tensor product of a Slater determinant with semiclassical structure and a coherent state, which evolve according to a fermionic version of the Schroedinger-Klein-Gordon equations.

Derivation of the Time Dependent Gross-Pitaevskii Equation in Two Dimensions

We present a microscopic derivation of the defocusing two-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation as a mean field equation starting from an interacting $N$-particle system of Bosons. We consider the interaction potential to be given either by $W_β(x)=N^{-1+2 β}W(N^βx)$, for any $β>0$, or to be given by $V_N(x)=e^{2N} V(e^N x)$, for some spherical symmetric, positive and compactly supported $W,V \in L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^2,\mathbb{R})$. In both cases we prove the convergence of the reduced density matrix corresponding to the exact time evolution to the projector onto the solution of the corresponding nonlinear Schrödinger equation in trace norm. For the latter potential $V_N$ we show that it is crucial to take the microscopic structure of the condensate into account in order to obtain the correct dynamics.

Theory of the Rotating Polaron: Spectrum and Self-Localization

We study a quantum impurity possessing both translational and internal rotational degrees of freedom interacting with a bosonic bath. Such a system corresponds to a `rotating polaron', which can be used to model, e.g., a rotating molecule immersed in an ultracold Bose gas or superfluid Helium. We derive the Hamiltonian of the rotating polaron and study its spectrum in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes using a combination of variational, diagrammatic, and mean-field approaches. We reveal how the coupling between linear and angular momenta affects stable quasiparticle states, and demonstrate that internal rotation leads to an enhanced self-localization in the translational degrees of freedom.
