Frustrated spin model as a hard-sphere liquid

We show that one-dimensional topological objects (kinks) are natural degrees of freedom for an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice. Its ground states and the coexistence of spin ordering with an extensive zero-temperature entropy can be easily understood in terms of kinks forming a hard-sphere liquid. Using this picture we explain effects of quantum spin dynamics on that frustrated model, which we also study numerically.

Tunneling problems by quantum Monte Carlo

We develop a new numerical scheme which allows precise solution of coherent tunneling problems, i.e., problems with exponentially small transition amplitudes between quasidegenerate states. We explain how this method works for the single-particle (tunneling in the double-well potential) and many-body systems (e.g., vacuum-to-vacuum transitions), and gives directly the instanton shape and tunneling amplitude. Most importantly, transition amplitudes may be calculated to arbitrary accuracy (being limited solely by statistical errors) no matter how small are their absolute values.

Low-Temperature Quantum Relaxation in a System of Magnetic Nanomolecules

We argue that to explain recent resonant tunneling experiments on crystals of Mn$_{12}$ and Fe$_8$, particularly in the low-T limit, one must invoke dynamic nuclear spin and dipolar interactions. We show the low-$T$, short-time relaxation will then have a $\sqrt{t/τ}$ form, where $τ$ depends on the nuclear $T_2$, on the tunneling matrix element $Δ_{10}$ between the two lowest levels, and on the initial distribution of internal fields in the sample, which depends very strongly on sample shape. The results are directly applicable to the $Fe_8$ system. We also give some results for the long-time relaxation.
