Critical properties of the valence-bond-solid transition in lattice quantum electrodynamics

Elucidating the phase diagram of lattice gauge theories with fermionic matter in 2+1 dimensions has become a problem of considerable interest in recent years, motivated by physical problems ranging from chiral symmetry breaking in high-energy physics to fractionalized phases of strongly correlated materials in condensed matter physics. For a sufficiently large number $N_f$ of flavors of four-component Dirac fermions, recent sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo studies of lattice quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) on the square lattice have found evidence for a continuous quantum phase transition between a power-law correlated conformal QED$_3$ phase and a confining valence-bond-solid phase with spontaneously broken point-group symmetries. The critical continuum theory of this transition was shown to be the $O(2)$ QED$_3$-Gross-Neveu model, equivalent to the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, and critical exponents were computed to first order in the large-$N_f$ expansion and the $ε$ expansion. We extend these studies by computing critical exponents to second order in the large-$N_f$ expansion and to four-loop order in the $ε$ expansion below four spacetime dimensions. In the latter context, we also explicitly demonstrate that the discrete $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry of the valence-bond-solid order parameter is dynamically enlarged to a continuous $O(2)$ symmetry at criticality for all values of $N_f$.

Fermion Traces Without Evanescence

We outline the evaluation of $n$-dimensional fermion traces ($n\in\mathbb{N}$) built by products of Dirac-$γ$ matrices suitable for a uniform dimensional continuation. Such a continuation is needed for calculations employing a dimensional regulator whenever intrinsically integer dimensional tensors yield non-vanishing contributions. A prime example for such a tensor is given by $γ_5$ for $n=4$. The main difference between Dimensional Regularization (DREG) and a Dimensionally Continued Regularization (DCREG) is that DCREG does not attempt to lift the algebra to continuous $d$ dimensions ($d\in\mathbb{R}$). As a consequence one has to properly deal with evanescent structures in order to ensure the uniform application of the regulator. In basic steps we identify evanescent structures in fermion traces and show that their proper treatment is crucial for example when calculating the $VVA$ anomaly in four dimensions. We checked that the performed considerations enable the evaluation of Standard Model (SM) $Z$-factors within DCREG up to including three loops.

Critical properties of the Néel/algebraic-spin-liquid transition

The algebraic spin liquid is a long-sought-after phase of matter characterized by the absence of quasiparticle excitations, a low-energy description in terms of emergent Dirac fermions and gauge fields interacting according to (2+1)D quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$), and power-law correlations with universal exponents. The prototypical algebraic spin liquid is the Affleck-Marston $π$-flux phase, originally proposed as a possible ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the 2D square lattice. While the latter model is now known to order antiferromagnetically at zero temperature, recent sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations of spin-1/2 fermions coupled to a compact U(1) gauge field on the square lattice have shown that quantum fluctuations can destroy Néel order and drive a direct quantum phase transition to the $π$-flux phase. We show this transition is in the universality class of the chiral Heisenberg QED$_3$-Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model with a single SU(2) doublet of four-component Dirac fermions (i.e., $N_f=1$), pointing out important differences with the corresponding putative transition on the kagome lattice. Using an $ε$ expansion below four spacetime dimensions to four-loop order, and a large-$N_f$ expansion up to second order, we show the transition is continuous and compute various thermodynamic and susceptibility critical exponents at this transition, setting the stage for future numerical determinations of these quantities. As a byproduct of our analysis, we also obtain charge-density-wave and valence-bond-solid susceptibility exponents at the semimetal-Néel transition for interacting fermions on the honeycomb lattice.

Abelian Higgs model at four loops, fixed-point collision and deconfined criticality

The abelian Higgs model is the textbook example for the superconducting transition and the Anderson-Higgs mechanism, and has become pivotal in the description of deconfined quantum criticality. We study the abelian Higgs model with $n$ complex scalar fields at unprecedented four-loop order in the $4-ε$ expansion and find that the annihilation of the critical and bicritical points occurs at a critical number of $n_c \approx 182.95\left(1 - 1.752ε+ 0.798 ε^2 + 0.362ε^3\right) + \mathcal{O}\left(ε^4\right)\nonumber$. Consequently, below $n_c$, the transition turns from second to first order. Resummation of the series to extract the result in three-dimensions provides strong evidence for a critical $n_c(d=3)$ which is significantly below the leading-order value, but the estimates for $n_c$ are widely spread. Conjecturing the topology of the renormalization group flow between two and four dimensions, we obtain a smooth interpolation function for $n_c(d)$ and find $n_c(3)\approx 12.2\pm 3.9$ as our best estimate in three dimensions. Finally, we discuss Miransky scaling occurring below $n_c$ and comment on implications for weakly first-order behavior of deconfined quantum transitions. We predict an emergent hierarchy of length scales between deconfined quantum transitions corresponding to different $n$.

Critical behavior of the QED$_3$-Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model at four loops

We study the universal critical properties of the QED$_3$-Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model with $N$ flavors of four-component Dirac fermions coupled to a real scalar order parameter at four-loop order in the $ε$ expansion below four dimensions. For $N=1$, the model is conjectured to be infrared dual to the $SU(2)$-symmetric noncompact $\mathbb{C}$P$^1$ model, which describes the deconfined quantum critical point of the Néel-valence-bond-solid transition of spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnets on the two-dimensional square lattice. For $N=2$, the model describes a quantum phase transition between an algebraic spin liquid and a chiral spin liquid in the spin-1/2 kagomé antiferromagnet. For general $N$ we determine the order parameter anomalous dimension, the correlation length exponent, the stability critical exponent, as well as the scaling dimensions of $SU(N)$ singlet and adjoint fermion mass bilinears at the critical point. We use Padé approximants to obtain estimates of critical properties in 2+1 dimensions.

Transition between algebraic and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids at large $N$

We present a field theory description of a quantum phase transition in two spatial dimensions between a $U(1)$ algebraic spin liquid with $N$ flavors of gapless two-component Dirac fermionic spinons and a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid. This transition is driven by spinon pairing and concomitant Higgsing of the emergent $U(1)$ gauge field. For sufficiently large $N$ we find a quantum critical point with non-Gaussian exponents that is stable against instanton proliferation. We compute critical exponents using either $1/N$ or $ε$ expansions, and give estimates of the critical value of $N$ below which the quantum critical point disappears.

RG analysis at higher orders in perturbative QFTs in CMP

In this contribution we report on the perturbative determination of $β$-functions and anomalous dimensions for the chiral Ising, chiral XY and chiral Heisenberg Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model around $D=4$ dimensions at four loops and the first Padé extrapolation of critical exponents at non-trivial, infrared stable fixed points to $D=3$ to this order. This talk is based on Ref. [Zerf:2017zqi].

Four-loop critical exponents for the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models

We study the chiral Ising, the chiral XY and the chiral Heisenberg models at four-loop order with the perturbative renormalization group in $4-ε$ dimensions and compute critical exponents for the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa fixed points to order $\mathcal{O}(ε^4)$. Further, we provide Padé estimates for the correlation length exponent, the boson and fermion anomalous dimension as well as the leading correction to scaling exponent in 2+1 dimensions. We also confirm the emergence of supersymmetric field theories at four loops for the chiral Ising and the chiral XY models with $N=1/4$ and $N=1/2$ fermions, respectively. Furthermore, applications of our results relevant to various quantum transitions in the context of Dirac and Weyl semimetals are discussed, including interaction-induced transitions in graphene and surface states of topological insulators.

Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model at three loops and Ising critical behavior of Dirac systems

Dirac and Weyl fermions appear as quasi-particle excitations in many different condensed-matter systems. They display various quantum transitions which represent unconventional universality classes related to the variants of the Gross-Neveu model. In this work we study the bosonized version of the standard Gross-Neveu model -- the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory -- at three-loop order, and compute critical exponents in $4-ε$ dimensions for general number of fermion flavors. Our results fully encompass the previously known two-loop calculations, and agree with the known three-loop results in the purely bosonic limit of the theory. We also find the exponents to satisfy the emergent super-scaling relations in the limit of a single-component fermion, order by order up to three loops. Finally, we apply the computed series for the exponents and their Padé approximants to several phase transitions of current interest: metal-insulator transitions of spin-1/2 and spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice, emergent supersymmetric surface field theory in topological phases, as well as the disorder-induced quantum transition in Weyl semimetals. Comparison with the results of other analytical and numerical methods is discussed.

Irreducible tensor basis and general Fierz relations for Bhabha scattering like amplitudes

We construct an irreducible s- and t-channel tensor basis for Bhabha scattering like amplitudes based on the properties of the underlying Lorentz symmetry in four space-time dimensions. In the given basis the calculation of amplitude contractions like the amplitude square reduces to the contraction of their corresponding coefficient tensors. Further the basis retains the full amplitude information and thus can be applied in off-shell cases. The general Fierz transformations which relate the s- and t-channel basis with each other are obtained. As an example for application we use the basis to calculate the tree-level Bhabha scattering amplitude.

Superconducting quantum criticality of topological surface states at three loops

The semimetal-superconductor quantum phase transition on the two-dimensional (2D) surface of a 3D topological insulator is conjectured to exhibit an emergent $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, based on a renormalization group (RG) analysis at one-loop order in the $ε$ expansion. We provide additional support for this conjecture by performing a three-loop RG analysis and showing that the supersymmetric fixed point found at this order survives the extrapolation to 2D. We compute critical exponents to order $ε^3$, obtaining the more accurate value $ν\approx 0.985$ for the correlation length exponent and confirming that the fermion and boson anomalous dimensions remain unchanged beyond one loop, as expected from non-renormalization theorems in supersymmetric theories. We further couple the system to a dynamical $U(1)$ gauge field, and argue that the transition becomes fluctuation-induced first order. We discuss implications of this result for quantum phase transitions between certain symmetry-preserving correlated surface states of 3D topological insulators.

Hyperfine splitting in the bottomonium system on the lattice and in the continuum

The latest experimental measurements of the hyperfine splitting $E_{\rm{hfs}}=M_{Υ(1 S)}-M_{η_b(1 S)}$ done by the Belle collaboration and the perturbative and lattice QCD predictions show a tension with the current extraction within lattice non-relativistic QCD. In this talk we revise the analysis of radiative corrections to the bottomonium hyperfine splitting within lattice non-relativistic QCD at the next-to-leading order. The result of the analysis is in good agreement with the perturbative and lattice QCD result as well as the direct measurement.

We present the deterimination of the bottom quark mass using non-relativistic $Υ$ Sum Rules at $\text{N}^3\text{LO}^*$[1]. The explicit dependence of $\overline{m}_b(\overline{m}_b)$ on the input value $α_s(M_Z)$ is given for the first time.

Bottom Quark Mass from $Υ$ Sum Rules to ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$

We use the ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$ approximation of the heavy-quark vacuum polarization function in the threshold region to determine the bottom quark mass from nonrelativistic $Υ$ sum rules. We find very good stability and convergence of the perturbative series for the bottom quark mass in $\rm\overline{MS}$ renormalization scheme. Our final result is $\overline{m}_b(\overline{m}_b)=4.169\pm 0.008_{th}\pm 0.002_{α_s}\pm 0.002_{exp}$.

SLAM, a Mathematica interface for SUSY spectrum generators

We present and publish a Mathematica package, which can be used to automatically obtain any numerical MSSM input parameter from SUSY spectrum generators, which follow the SLHA standard, like Spheno, Softsusy, Suseflav or Suspect. The package enables a very comfortable way of numerical evaluations within the MSSM using Mathematica. It implements easy to use predefined high scale and low scale scenarios like mSUGRA or $m_h^{\rm max}$ and if needed enables the user to directly specify the input required by the spectrum generators. In addition it supports an automatic saving and loading of SUSY spectra to and from a SQL data base, avoiding the rerun of a spectrum generator for a known spectrum.

Precision calculations for Higgs-boson production at hadron colliders

The next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculation of the effective Higgs gluon coupling $C_1$ for the lightest Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) Higgs boson $h^0$ is presented. Selected numerical results for the total production cross section of $h^0$ via gluon fusion at the LHC within the effective field theory approach are shown in the NNLO approximation.
