A TQFT perspective on satellite constructions and toral decompositions

We consider the classical satellite and splice constructions of knot theory from the perspective of link-complement states in three-dimensional topological quantum field theory (TQFT). These states are prepared by a TQFT on a link-complement manifold, namely a manifold with multiple disjoint torus boundaries, obtained by removing a thickened link from a closed ambient three-manifold. In this setting, satellite and splice constructions are realized by gluing manifolds along torus boundaries, and the TQFT assigns to these building blocks multilinear operators acting on the corresponding torus Hilbert spaces. We give explicit prescriptions for these operators and show how they can be used to build link-complement states. This construction is closely related to the JSJ decomposition of link-complement manifolds. While splicing builds manifolds by gluing along tori, the JSJ decomposition cuts a manifold along essential tori into canonical pieces. From the TQFT point of view, this expresses a link-complement state as a network of elementary operators associated with the JSJ pieces. We illustrate this framework by studying the entanglement entropy of Seifert-fibered link complements, Hopf-chain complements, and complements of Whitehead-doubled Hopf chains, showing how their different JSJ structures lead to distinct entanglement patterns.

Abelian 3D TQFT gravity, ensemble holography and stabilizer states

We construct a model of 3D quantum gravity based on abelian topological quantum field theory (TQFT), by defining the gravitational path-integral as a sum over all 3D topologies with genus-$g$ boundary $Σ_g$. The path-integral of an abelian TQFT $\mathcal T$ on any single topology with boundary $Σ_g$ prepares a stabilizer state. This way, $\mathcal T$ partitions all these topologies into finitely many equivalence classes, where each topology within a class is associated with the same stabilizer state. The gravitational path-integral can thus be rephrased as a weighted sum over representative topologies, which are further organized into orbits under the mapping class group of $Σ_g$. One orbit is represented by handlebodies, whose average reproduces the ``Poincaré series of the vacuum", while additional orbits describe non-handlebody topologies. The resulting quantum gravity state is $Sp(2g,\mathbb Z)$-invariant and can be expressed as a weighted average of 2D CFT partition functions on $Σ_g$. This establishes a duality between a weighted sum over bulk topologies and a weighted sum over boundary CFTs. We introduce the ``$λ$-matrix", which relates bulk and boundary weights. The $λ$-matrix can be fully determined by the set of topological boundary conditions that the TQFT admits, and we present a systematic procedure to construct this set. Using this framework, we evaluate the $λ$-matrix and the TQFT gravity state in several tractable examples.

Temperature dependence in Krylov space

We consider the recursion method applied to a generic 2pt function of a quantum system and show, in full generality, that the temperature dependence of the corresponding Lanczos coefficients is governed by integrable dynamics. After an appropriate change of variables, Lanczos coefficients with even and odd indices are described by two independent Toda chains, related at the level of the initial conditions. Consistency of the resulting equations can be used to show that certain scale-invariant models necessarily have a degenerate spectrum. We dub this self-consistency-based approach the ''Krylov bootstrap''. The known analytic behavior of the Toda chain at late times translates into analytic control over the 2pt function and Krylov complexity at very low temperatures. We also discuss the behavior of Lanczos coefficients when the temperature is low but not much smaller than the spectral gap, and elucidate the origin of the staggering behavior of Lanczos coefficients in this regime.

Code construction and ensemble holography of simply-laced WZW models at level 1

We introduce a code construction for Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models associated with simply-laced affine Lie algebras at level 1. The chiral primary fields of these rational CFTs can be parametrized by the elements of the outer automorphism group of the affine algebra, which is isomorphic to the discriminant group $G$ of the root lattice. We show that the classification of even, self-dual codes over the alphabet $G$ is equivalent to the classification of modular-invariant CFTs. Each individual CFT is dual to a Chern-Simons theory, after gauging the maximal, non-anomalous subgroup of its $1$-form symmetry group specified by the code. We calculate the ensemble average of these CFTs, which is holographically dual to ``CS gravity"-- where the bulk theory is summed over topologies. When the alphabet $G$ consists only of elements of square-free order, we explicitly show that this ensemble average reproduces the Poincaré series of the vacuum character, which can be interpreted as the CS path-integral summed only over handlebody topologies. However, when $G$ contains elements of non-square-free order, additional contributions from singular topologies arise.

Entanglement Entropy in Ground States of Long-Range Fermionic Systems

We study the scaling of ground state entanglement entropy of various free fermionic models on one dimensional lattices, where the hopping and pairing terms decay as a power law. We seek to understand the scaling of entanglement entropy in generic models as the exponent of the power law $α$ is varied. We ask if there exists a common $α_{c}$ across different systems governing the transition to area law scaling found in local systems. We explore several examples numerically and argue that when applicable, the scaling of entanglement entropy in long-range models is constrained by predictions from the low-energy theory. In contrast, disordered models and models without a continuum limit show fractal scaling of entanglement approaching volume-law behavior as $α$ approaches zero. These general features are expected to persist on turning on interactions.

Optimal Narain CFTs from Codes

Recently established connection between additive codes and Narain CFTs provides a new tool to construct theories with special properties and solve modular bootstrap constraints by reducing them to algebraic identities. We generalize previous constructions to include many new theories, in particular we show that all known optimal Narain theories, i.e. those maximizing the value of spectral gap, can be constructed from codes. For asymptotically large central charge $c$ we show there are code theories with the spectral gap growing linearly with $c$, with the coefficient saturating the conjectural upper bound. We therefore conjecture that optimal Narain theories for any value of $c$ can be obtained from codes.

Criticality and Transport in Magnetized Holographic Systems

In this master's thesis the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory is used to model the dynamics of 2+1-dimensional, strongly coupled, large-$N$ quantum field theories with intrinsic T-violation, at finite density and temperature, in the presence of a magnetic field. We include axion fields in order to introduce momentum relaxation. We find analytic expressions for the DC conductivity and present numerical results for the AC conductivity. We also classify the IR-asymptotic hyperscaling violating solutions of the theory.
