Sums of Kloosterman sums formed with modular symbols

We study sums of Kloosterman sums formed with a modular symbol. Employing Tauberian methods, we first give an estimate for a (Riesz) sum of Ramanujan sums formed with a modular symbol. We further define a zeta function that is analogous to the Selberg zeta function, establish its continuation to $\Re(s)>1/2$, give estimates for its growth and use this to prove a cancellation statement for sums of these twisted Kloosterman sums. We explain the connection of this construction to the eigenvalue 1/4 problem and formulate an analogue of Linnik's conjecture. Finally, we present numerical evidence that there is cancellation and also that the Kloosterman sums with a modular symbol are not correlated with classical Kloosterman sums.

Summation Formulas for Harmonic Maass Forms

In a previous work (arXiv:2505.05574), a summation formula for harmonic Maass forms of polynomial growth was established. In this note, we use the theory of $L$-series of harmonic Maass forms to state and prove a summation formula for such forms without any restrictions on their growth. We deduce a summation formula for the partition function. We further employ the same theory to derive a result on classical modular forms, namely, a summation formula and the asymptotics of a Riesz sum attached to a cusp form.

Summation formulas for Hurwitz class numbers and other mock modular coefficients

We prove a formula for weighted sums of the first $n$ coefficients of mock modular forms of moderate growth and apply it to Hurwitz class numbers and coefficients of negative half integral weight Eisenstein series, which take the form of certain quadratic Dirichlet $L$-values. Our formula is a mock modular version of a Bessel-sum identity proved by Chandrasekharan and Narasimhan for Dirichlet series satisfying a functional equation. Our proof utilizes $L$-functions for mock modular Eisenstein series defined by Shankadhar and Singh.

Iterated integrals and cohomology

We introduce an extension of the standard cohomology which is characterised by maps that fail to be classical cocycles by products of simpler maps. The construction is motivated by the study of Manin's noncommutative modular symbols and of false theta functions. We use this construction to obtain a cohomological interpretation of important iterated integrals that arise in that study. In another direction, our approach gives modular counterparts to the long-studied relations among multiple zeta values.

Period-like polynomials for $L$-series associated with half-integral weight cusp forms

Given the L-series of a half-integral weight cusp form, we construct a cohomology class with coefficients in a finite dimensional vector space in a way that parallels the Eichler cohomology in the integral weight case. We also define a lift of half-integral weight cusp forms to integral weight modular forms that is compatible with the $L$-series of the respective forms.

Derivatives of $L$-series of weakly holomorphic cusp forms

Based on the theory of $L$-series associated with weakly holomorphic modular forms in \cite{DLRR}, we derive explicit formulas for central values of derivatives of $L$-series as integrals with limits inside the upper half-plane. This has computational advantages, already in the case of classical holomorphic cusp forms and, in the last section, we discuss computational aspects and explicit examples.

L-values of harmonic Maass forms

Bruinier, Funke, and Imamoglu have proved a formula for what can philosophically be called the "central $L$-value" of the modular $j$-invariant. Previously, this had been heuristically suggested by Zagier. Here, we interpret this "$L$-value" as the value of an actual $L$-series, and extend it to all integral arguments and to a large class of harmonic Maass forms which includes all weakly holomorphic cusp forms. The context and relation to previously defined $L$-series for weakly holomorphic and harmonic Maass forms are discussed. These formulas suggest possible arithmetic or geometric meaning of $L$-values in these situations. The key ingredient of the proof is to apply a recent theory of Lee, Raji, and the authors to describe harmonic Maass $L$-functions using test functions.

Modular iterated integrals associated with cusp forms

We construct an explicit family of modular iterated integrals which involves cusp forms. This leads to a new method of producing "invariant versions" of iterated integrals of modular forms. The construction will be based on an extension of higher-order modular forms which, in contrast to the standard higher-order forms, applies to general Fuchsian groups of the first kind and, as such, is of independent interest.

Period functions associated to real-analytic modular forms

We define L-functions for the class of real-analytic modular forms recently introduced by F. Brown. We establish their main properties and construct the analogue of period polynomial in cases of special interest, including those of modular iterated integrals.

Automorphic forms of higher order

In this paper a theory of Hecke operators for higher order modular forms is established. The definition of cusp forms and attached L-functions is extended beyond the realm of parabolic invariants. The role of representation theoretic methods is clarified and, motivated by higher order forms, new convolution products of L-functions are introduced.

Period polynomials, derivatives of $L$-functions, and zeros of polynomials

Period polynomials have long been fruitful tools for the study of values of $L$-functions in the context of major outstanding conjectures. In this paper, we survey some facets of this study from the perspective of Eichler cohomology. We discuss ways to incorporate non-cuspidal modular forms and values of derivatives of $L$-functions into the same framework. We further review investigations of the location of zeros of the period polynomial as well as of its analogue for $L$-derivatives.

Eichler cohomology and zeros of polynomials associated to derivatives of $L$-functions

In recent years, a number of papers have been devoted to the study of roots of period polynomials of modular forms. Here, we study cohomological analogues of the Eichler-Shimura period polynomials corresponding to higher $L$-derivatives. We state general conjectures about the locations of the roots of the full and odd parts of the polynomials, in analogy with the existing literature on period polynomials, and we also give numerical evidence that similar results hold for our higher derivative "period polynomials" in the case of cusp forms. We prove a special case of this conjecture in the case of Eisenstein series.

Kernels of L-functions and shifted convolutions

We give a characterisation of the field into which quotients of values of L-functions associated to a cusp form belong. The construction involves shifted convolution series of divisor sums and to establish it we combine parts of F. Brown's technique to study multiple modular values with the properties of a double Eisentein series previously studied by the author and C. O'Sullivan.

Regularized inner products and errors of modularity

We develop a regularization for Petersson inner products of arbitrary weakly holomorphic modular forms, generalizing several known regularizations. As one application, we extend work of Duke, Imamoglu, and Toth on regularized inner products of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weights $0$ and $3/2$. These regularized inner products can be evaluated in terms of the coefficients of holomorphic parts of harmonic Maass forms of dual weights. Moreover, we study the errors of modularity of the holomorphic parts of such a harmonic Maass forms and show that they induce cocyles in the first parabolic cohomology group introduced by Bruggeman, Choie, and the second author. This provides explicit representatives of the cohomology classes constructed abstractly and in a very general setting in their work.
