Uniform doubling on compact homogeneous spaces with cyclic Lie brackets

We establish the uniform doubling property for $G$-invariant metrics on a wide class of compact Riemannian homogeneous spaces $(G/K,g)$, describing explicitly the volume growth of the metric balls $B_g(p,r)$. This property was previously known only for specific cases, including abelian Lie groups, the Lie group $SU(2)$ and quotients of $SU(2)\times \mathbb R^n$. Building on the approach of Eldredge, Gordina and Saloff-Coste for $SU(2)$, we refine and develop geometric and Lie-theoretic tools that allow us to replace the explicit identities of the Milnor basis in $SU(2)$ by a general structural assumption on the metric eigenspace decomposition. In particular, we show that the uniform doubling of $(G/K,g)$ is a consequence of the cyclic bracket condition $[\mathfrak{m}_i,\mathfrak{m}_j]=\mathfrak{m}_k$, for $i,j,k$ pairwise distinct, a property that naturally generalizes the Milnor structure of $SU(2)$. We apply our results to $\mathbb Z_2\times \mathbb Z_2$-symmetric spaces, establishing the uniform doubling property for the complete family of $G$-invariant metrics on several classes of generalized Wallach spaces. For compact homogeneous spaces, we also derive a global Poincaré inequality which holds uniformly for the spaces $(G/K,g)$ under consideration, with a constant controlled by the volume doubling constant of the space.

A characterization of perfect Leibniz algebras

Leibniz algebras are non-antisymmetric generalizations of Lie algebras that have attracted substantial interest due to their close relation with the latter class. A Leibniz algebra $A$ is called perfect if it coincides with its derived subalgebra $A^2$. As a generalization of an analogous result for Lie algebras, we show that perfect Leibniz algebras, of arbitrary dimension and over any field, are characterized among Leibniz algebras by the property that they are ideals whenever they are embedded as subideals. Equivalently, we prove that perfect Leibniz algebras are precisely those Leibniz algebras such that whenever they are embedded as ideals, they are characteristic ideals, i.e., they are invariant under all derivations of the ambient algebra. We apply the above to prove certain inclusion relations for derivation algebras of perfect Leibniz algebras.

Geodesic orbit metrics on the compact Lie group $G_2$

Geodesics on Riemannian manifolds are precisely the locally length-minimizing curves, but their explicit description via simple functions is rarely possible. Geodesics of the simplest form, such as lines on Euclidean space and great circles on the round sphere, usually arise as orbits of one-parameter groups of isometries via Lie group actions. Manifolds where all geodesics are such orbits are called geodesic orbit manifolds (or g.o. manifolds), and their understanding and classification spans a quite long and continuous history in Riemannian geometry. In this paper, we classify the left-invariant g.o. metrics on the compact Lie group $G_2$, using the nice representation theoretic behaviour of a class of Lie subgroups called (weakly) regular. We expect that the main tools and insights discussed here will facilitate further classifications of g.o. Lie groups, particularly of lower ranks.

A review of compact geodesic orbit manifolds and the g.o. condition for $\SU(5)/\s(\U(2)\times \U(2))$

Geodesic orbit manifolds (or g.o. manifolds) are those Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ whose geodesics are integral curves of Killing vector fields. Equivalently, there exists a Lie group $G$ of isometries of $(M,g)$ such that any geodesic $γ$ has the simple form $γ(t)=e^{tX}\cdot p$, where $e$ denotes the exponential map on $G$. The classification of g.o. manifolds is a longstanding problem in Riemannian geometry. In this brief survey, we present some recent results and open questions on the subject focusing on the compact case. In addition we study the geodesic orbit condition for the space $\SU(5)/\s(\U(2)\times \U(2))$.

On the transitivity of Lie ideals and a characterization of perfect Lie algebras

We explore general intrinsic and extrinsic conditions that allow the transitivity of the relation of being a Lie ideal, in the sense that if a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}$ is a subideal of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ (i.e. there exist Lie subalgebras $\mathfrak{l}_0,\mathfrak{l}_1,\dots,\mathfrak{l}_n$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ with $\mathfrak{h}=\mathfrak{l}_0\unlhd \mathfrak{l}_1 \unlhd\cdots \unlhd \mathfrak{l}_n=\mathfrak{g}$), then $\mathfrak{h}$ is an ideal of $\mathfrak{g}$. We also prove that perfect Lie algebras of arbitrary dimension and over any field are intrinsically characterized by transitivity of this type; In particular, we show that a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}$ is perfect (i.e. $\mathfrak{h}=[\mathfrak{h}, \mathfrak{h}]$) if and only if for any Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ such that $\mathfrak{h}$ is a subideal of $\mathfrak{g}$, it follows that $\mathfrak{h}$ is an ideal of $\mathfrak{g}$.

Einstein Lie groups, geodesic orbit manifolds and regular Lie subgroups

We study the relation between two special classes of Riemannian Lie groups $G$ with a left-invariant metric $g$: The Einstein Lie groups, defined by the condition $\operatorname{Ric}_g=cg$, and the geodesic orbit Lie groups, defined by the property that any geodesic is the integral curve of a Killing vector field. The main results imply that extensive classes of compact simple Einstein Lie groups $(G,g)$ are not geodesic orbit manifolds, thus providing large-scale answers to a relevant question of Y. Nikonorov. Our approach involves studying and characterizing the $G\times K$-invariant geodesic orbit metrics on Lie groups $G$ for a wide class of subgroups $K$ that we call (weakly) regular. By-products of our work are structural and characterization results that are of independent interest for the classification problem of geodesic orbit manifolds.

Geodesic orbit metrics in a class of homogeneous bundles over real and complex Stiefel manifolds

Geodesic orbit spaces (or g.o. spaces) are defined as those homogeneous Riemannian spaces $(M=G/H,g)$ whose geodesics are orbits of one-parameter subgroups of $G$. The corresponding metric $g$ is called a geodesic orbit metric. We study the geodesic orbit spaces of the form $(G/H,g)$, such that $G$ is one of the compact classical Lie groups $\SO(n)$, $U(n)$, and $H$ is a diagonally embedded product $H_1\times \cdots \times H_s$, where $H_j$ is of the same type as $G$. This class includes spheres, Stiefel manifolds, Grassmann manifolds and real flag manifolds. The present work is a contribution to the study of g.o. spaces $(G/H,g)$ with $H$ semisimple.

Geodesic orbit metrics in a class of homogeneous bundles over quaternionic Stiefel manifolds

We study the geodesic orbit spaces of the form $(\Sp(n)/\Sp(n_1)\times \cdots \times \Sp(n_s), g)$, with $0<n_1+\cdots +n_s\leq n$. Such spaces include spheres, quaternionic Stiefel manifolds, Grassmann manifolds and quaternionic flag manifolds. The present work is a contribution to the study of g.o. spaces $(G/H,g)$ with $H$ semisimple.

Geodesic orbit spaces of compact Lie groups of rank two

Geodesic orbit spaces are those Riemannian homogeneous spaces (G/H,g) whose geodesics are orbits of one-parameter subgroups of G. We classify the simply connected geodesic orbit spaces where G is a compact Lie group of rank two. We prove that the only such spaces for which the metric g is not induced from a bi-invariant metric on G are certain spheres and projective spaces, endowed with metrics induced from Hopf fibrations.

Motion of charged particle in a class of homogeneous spaces

We study the motion of charged particle under a natural choice of electromagnetic field in a general class of compact homogeneous spaces. As a special case we describe the motion in homogeneous Riemannian spaces $(G/H,g)$, where $g$ is any deformation of a normal metric along the fibers of a homogeneous fibration $K/H\rightarrow G/H \rightarrow G/K$.

On a class of geodesic orbit spaces with abelian isotropy subgroup

Riemannian geodesic orbit spaces (G/H,g) are natural generalizations of symmetric spaces, defined by the property that their geodesics are orbits of one-parameter subgroups of G. We study the geodesic orbit spaces of the form (G/S,g), where G is a compact, connected, semisimple Lie group and S is abelian. We give a simple geometric characterization of those spaces, namely that they are naturally reductive. In turn, this yields the classification of the invariant geodesic orbit (and also the naturally reductive) metrics on any space of the form G/S. Our approach involves simplifying the intricate parameter space of geodesic orbit metrics on G/S by reducing their study to certain submanifolds and generalized flag manifolds, and by studying properties of root systems of simple Lie algebras associated to these manifolds.

Geodesics as deformations of one-parameter subgroups in homogeneous manifolds

We solve explicitly the geodesic equation for a wide class of (pseudo)-Riemannian homogeneous manifolds (G/H,m), including those with G compact, as well as non-compact semisimple Lie groups, under a simple algebraic condition for the metric m. We prove that these manifolds are geodesically complete and their geodesics are orbits in G/H of a product of N one-parameter subgroups of G, where N is a natural number. This is intimately related to the fact that the metrics m can be regarded as N-parameter deformations of a Riemannian metric in G/H with special symmetries. We show that there exists a wealth of metrics having the aforementioned type of geodesics; those metrics are constructed from any Lie subgroup series of the form H < H_1 < ... < H_{N-1} < G.

Geodesic orbit metrics in compact homogeneous manifolds with equivalent isotropy submodules

A geodesic orbit manifold (GO manifold) is a Riemannian manifold (M,g) with the property that any geodesic in M is an orbit of a one-parameter subgroup of a group G of isometries of (M,g). The metric g is then called a G-GO metric in M. For an arbitrary compact homogeneous manifold M=G/H, we simplify the general problem of determining the G-GO metrics in M. In particular, if the isotropy representation of H induces equivalent irreducible submodules in the tangent space of M, we obtain algebraic conditions, under which, any G-GO metric in M admits a reduced form. As an application we determine the U(n)-GO metrics in the complex Stiefel manifolds V_k(C^n).

Two-step homogeneous geodesics in homogeneous spaces

We study geodesics of the form $γ(t)=π(\exp(tX)\exp(tY))$, $X,Y\in \fr{g}=\operatorname{Lie}(G)$, in homogeneous spaces $G/K$, where $π:G\rightarrow G/K$ is the natural projection. These curves naturally generalise homogeneous geodesics, that is orbits of one-parameter subgroups of $G$ (i.e. $γ(t)=π(\exp (tX))$, $X\in \fr{g}$). We obtain sufficient conditions on a homogeneous space implying the existence of such geodesics for $X,Y\in \fr{m}=T_o(G/K)$. We use these conditions to obtain examples of Riemannian homogeneous spaces $G/K$ so that all geodesics of $G/K$ are of the above form. These include total spaces of homogeneous Riemannian submersions endowed with one parameter families of fiber bundle metrics, Lie groups endowed with special one parameter families of left-invariant metrics, generalised Wallach spaces, generalized flag manifolds, and $k$-symmetric spaces with $k$-even, equipped with certain one-parameter families of invariant metrics.

Geodesics in generalized Wallach spaces

We study geodesics in generalized Wallach spaces which are expressed as orbits of products of three exponential terms. These are homogeneous spaces $M=G/K$ whose isotropy representation decomposes into a direct sum of three submodules $\frak{m}=\frak{m}_1\oplus\frak{m}_2\oplus\frak{m}_3$, satisfying the relations $[\frak{m}_i,\frak{m}_i]\subset \frak{k}$. Assuming that the submodules $\frak{m}_i$ are pairwise non isomorphic, we study geodesics on such spaces of the form $γ(t)=\exp (tX)\exp (tY)\exp (tZ)\cdot o$, where $X\in\fr{m}_1, Y\in\fr{m}_2, Z\in\fr{m}_3$ ($o=eK$), with respect to a $G$-invariant metric. Our investigation imposes certain restrictions on the $G$-invariant metric, so the geodesics turn out to be orbits of two exponential terms. We give a point of view using Riemannian submersions. As an application, we describe geodesics in generalized flag manifolds with three isotropy summands and with second Betti number $b_2(M)=2$, and in the Stiefel manifolds $SO(n+2)/S(n)$. We relate our results to geodesic orbit spaces (g.o. spaces).
