Macroscopic origin of the topologically twisted index on $T^2 \times \Sigma_{\mathfrak{g}}$

We construct a novel family of non-supersymmetric, asymptotically locally AdS$_5$ solutions of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity. In Lorentzian signature the solutions describe finite temperature rotating electro-magnetically charged black strings with $S^1\times \Sigma_{\mathfrak{g}}$ horizon topology. In Euclidean signature the solutions are completely smooth and are asymptotic to $T^2\times \Sigma_{\mathfrak{g}}$. We present a detailed analysis of the thermodynamic properties of these gravitational backgrounds, compute their regularized on-shell action and analyze the extremal and supersymmetric limits. The supersymmetric, but non-extremal, limit of the Euclidean backgrounds is a family of complex black saddles and it provides the holographic dual description of the topologically twisted index of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs placed on $T^2\times \Sigma_{\mathfrak{g}}$. We show that the supergravity regularized on-shell action in this limit is in agreement with the large $N$ limit of the topologically twisted index in the dual SCFT.

Holographic Tests of the $\mu$ Ensemble

We study in detail a recent proposal stating that M-theory observables arising from the quantisation of M2-branes are naturally computed in a fixed $A_3$ ensemble. In a holographic setting this implies that in a semiclassical approximation 11d bulk observables in an asymptotically AdS$_4$ background are computed in a grand canonical ensemble of fixed chemical potential $\mu$ conjugate to the integer $N$ determining the rank of the gauge group in the dual CFT. We provide detailed precision tests of holography in the fixed $\mu$ ensemble by focusing on the two leading terms in the derivative expansion of the 11d theory. In addition, we study one-loop logarithmic corrections which we compute in detail. For asymptotically AdS$_4\times S^7/\mathbf{Z}_k$ 11d backgrounds our results are in agreement with supersymmetric localisation calculations in the dual ABJM SCFT. Moreover, we employ the logarithmic corrections in the $\mu$ ensemble to determine the measure of the integral Laplace transform and use this to compute dual SCFT supersymmetric partition functions, like the superconformal index and the squashed $S^3$ partition function, to all orders in the perturbative $1/N$ expansion in terms of Airy functions in harmony with results and conjectures in the dual SCFT.

CFTs on Squashed Spheres and the Thermal Effective Action

We study three-dimensional CFTs on compact Euclidean manifolds in two complementary limits: small deformations of the round $S^3$ and the small-fiber, large-squashing limit of Seifert manifolds. Near the round sphere, conformal perturbation theory expresses the free-energy response through integrated stress-tensor correlators. We derive a harmonic-space formula for the universal quadratic response to arbitrary metric squashing and show that it is proportional to the $c_T$ coefficient of the stress-tensor two-point function. For unitary CFTs this establishes that the sphere free energy is a local maximum in the space of metric deformations. This result extends to conserved spin-$s$ currents, whose quadratic response alternates in sign. For the specific case of squashing the Hopf fiber, we find an explicit form for the cubic response, and in addition obtain the leading correction to the two-point function of scalar operators. In the small-fiber limit, corresponding to the large temperature regime of the CFT, the partition function is governed by a two-dimensional thermal effective action constructed out of the Weyl-rescaled base metric and a Kaluza--Klein field strength. The thermal effective action relates CFT free energies on different backgrounds, including squashed Lens spaces, which we discuss in detail. We also explicitly determine the Wilson coefficients of this effective action, to various orders in the high-temperature expansion, for free fields, the large-$N$ critical O($N$) model, and holographic CFTs.

Towards OSV in AdS

We use supersymmetric localization for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs to establish a relation of the form $Z_{S^1\times S^2} \sim |Z_{S^3_b}|^2$ between the superconformal index and the squashed three-sphere partition function. This applies to general 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs and is derived using a saddle point approximation in the Cardy-like limit of small $S^1$ radius and large squashing parameter. We also show a similar relation between the topologically twisted index and the squashed sphere partition function. In the context of holography our results lead to a relation between the partition function of supersymmetric asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes and the large $N$ limit of $Z_{S^3_b}$ of the dual SCFT. Since the latter encodes the gauged supergravity prepotential, this result is akin to the OSV conjecture for asymptotically flat black holes. We confirm this relation in detail for SCFTs arising from M2-branes using recent large $N$ results from supersymmetric localization. We also briefly discuss a similar relation for 5d SCFTs and its implications for asymptotically AdS$_6$ black holes.

A Holographic Constraint on Scale Separation

We propose a new consistency condition for the compatibility of a gravitational effective field theory in AdS with a dual holographic description in terms of a family of large-$N$ CFTs. Using large-$N$ factorization of correlation functions combined with a properly defined notion of single- and multi-particle operators, we argue that the cubic scalar bulk couplings for fields dual to operators with extremal arrangements of the conformal dimensions, i.e. $\Delta_i=\Delta_j+\Delta_k$, should vanish. We apply this criterion to the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ effective supergravity theory describing the simplest DGKT AdS$_4$ vacua in type IIA string theory and show that it is non-trivially satisfied. In addition, we calculate explicitly all non-vanishing three-point correlation functions of low-lying scalar operators in the putative 3d CFTs dual to these AdS$_4$ string theory backgrounds.

AdS$_7$ Black Holes and Holography

We present a detailed study of the regularized on-shell action of the recently found asymptotically AdS$_7$ black hole supergravity solution with three angular momenta and two electric charges. We show that a particular choice of finite counterterms in the holographic renormalization procedure yields a result for the on-shell action of the supersymmetric limit of the black hole solution which is in perfect agreement with the large $N$ limit of the superconformal index of the dual 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ $A_{N}$ SCFT on $S^1\times S^5$. We also discuss a generalization of this 7d supergravity background to a new general family of black holes with horizons given by the $L^{p,q,r}$ 5d Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. The regularized on-shell action of these new 7d black holes is also in agreement with supersymmetric localization results for the 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ SCFT on $S^1\times L^{p,q,r}$. Finally, we briefly discuss a generalization of known AdS$_5$ gauged supergravity backgrounds to new 5d black holes with $L(p,q)$ lens space horizon topologies.

Holographic Correlators Beyond Maximal Supersymmetry

We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to explicitly calculate some of the three-point functions in the planar limit of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT. This strongly interacting CFT can be obtained as a mass deformation of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory and admits a dual description in terms of an AdS$_5$ background of type IIB supergravity. Our analysis is based on the existence of a consistent truncation of the 10d supergravity to a tractable 5d gravitational theory with 10 scalar fields dual to some of the low-lying operators in the spectrum of the LS SCFT. We apply standard holographic techniques to this 10-scalar model to analytically calculate the correlators of interest and thus provide a rare example of explicit three-point functions of scalar non-BPS operators in strongly coupled 4d CFTs. Using superconformal Ward identities we perform several consistency checks of these holographic correlators. As a byproduct of our analysis we discuss some subtleties related to the calculation of extremal correlators in AdS/CFT and the contribution of scalar derivative couplings to the evaluation of Witten diagrams. Our work provides a blueprint for the holographic calculation of other correlators in the LS SCFT and similar top-down holographic models.

Correlation functions for non-conformal D$p$-brane holography

We use holography to study correlation functions of local operators in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories arising on the world-volume of D$p$-branes in the large-$N$ and strong-coupling limit. The relevant supergravity backgrounds obtained from the near-horizon limit of the D$p$-branes enjoy a scaling similarity, which leads to an auxiliary AdS space of fractional dimension. This suggests that holographic correlation functions in this setup can be computed by integrating standard CFT correlators over the auxiliary extra dimensions. We apply this prescription to analytically compute two- and three-point correlators of scalar operators. The resulting two-point functions take a familiar CFT form but with shifted conformal dimensions, while the three-point correlators have a much more involved position dependence which we calculate explicitly in terms of a sum of Appell functions.

An Airy Tale at Large $N$

We study the sphere partition function of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ holographic SCFTs arising on the worldvolume of $N$ coincident M2-branes in the presence of squashing and real mass deformations. We argue that the all-order large $N$ perturbative expansion of the partition function resums into a compact expression in terms of an Airy function. We provide ample evidence for this conjecture using numerical methods, saddle point analysis in the 't Hooft limit, and the relation of the squashed sphere partition function to the Cardy-like limit of the superconformal index. We also discuss the relation of our results to topological string theory and the statistical mechanics of Fermi gases. Our conjecture has a bearing on the AdS/CFT correspondence and the structure of perturbative M-theory corrections to 11d supergravity which we discuss.

Spherical Branes and the BMN Matrix Quantum Mechanics

We study the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^d$ using supersymmetric localisation and holography. We argue that the analytic continuation in dimension to $d=1$ yields a Euclidean version of the BMN matrix quantum mechanics. This system can be analysed at large $N$ using supersymmetric localisation and leads to explicit results for the free energy on $S^d$ and the expectation value of supersymmetric Wilson loops. We show how these results can be reproduced at strong gauge coupling using holography by employing spherical D-brane solutions. We construct these solutions for any value of $d$ using an effective supergravity description and pay particular attention to the subtleties arising in the $d\to1$ limit. Our results have implications for the BMN matrix quantum mechanics and the physics of circular D0-branes.

Superconformal Indices of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs and Holography

We study the superconformal index of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories on $S^1\times_{\omega} S^2$ in the Cardy-like limit where the radius of the $S^1$ is much smaller than that of the $S^2$. We show that the first two leading terms in this Cardy-like expansion are dictated by the Bethe Ansatz formulation of the topologically twisted index of the same theory. We apply this relation to 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ holographic superconformal field theories describing the low-energy dynamics of $N$ M2-branes and derive closed form expressions, valid to all orders in the $1/N$ expansion, for the two leading terms in the Cardy-like expansion of the superconformal index. We also discuss the implications of our results for the entropy of supersymmetric Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4$ and the four-derivative corrections to 4d gauged supergravity.

The Conformal Manifold of S-folds in String Theory

We continue the holographic exploration of the conformal manifold of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ S-fold SCFTs constructed by gauging the flavor symmetry of the Gaiotto-Witten $T[U(N)]$ theory. We show how to uplift the two-parameter family of AdS$_4$ vacua dual to this conformal manifold to 10d backgrounds of type IIB supergravity. We use these uplifted solutions to shed new light on the mysterious nature of the infinite distance limit on the conformal manifold and to study probe strings and D3-branes. This analysis uncovers an intriguing structure of the $S^3$ partition function of the S-fold SCFTs which resembles the giant graviton expansion of the superconformal index of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. We also show how to each member of the family of supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua one can associate a consistent truncation to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauged supergravity and use this result, in conjunction with holography, to calculate the large $N$ partition function of the 3d S-fold SCFT on compact Euclidean manifolds. Finally, we generalize the supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua to a four-parameter family of non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ solutions.

A compendium of logarithmic corrections in AdS/CFT

We study the logarithmic corrections to various CFT partition functions in the context of the AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence for theories arising on the worldvolume of M2-branes. We utilize four-dimensional gauged supergravity and heat kernel methods and present general expressions for the logarithmic corrections to the gravitational on-shell action and black hole entropy for a number of different supergravity backgrounds. We outline several subtle features of these calculations and contrast them with a similar analysis of logarithmic corrections performed directly in the eleven-dimensional uplift of a given four-dimensional supergravity background. We find results consistent with AdS/CFT provided that the infinite sum over KK modes on the internal space is regularized in a specific manner. This analysis leads to an explicit expression for the logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large Kerr-Newmann and Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes in AdS$_4$. Our results also have important implications for effective field theory coupled to gravity in AdS$_4$ and for the existence of scale-separated AdS$_4$ vacua in string theory, which come in the form of new constraints on the field content and mass spectrum of matter fields.

Holographic Thermal Observables and M2-branes

We use holography in conjunction with recent results from supersymmetric localization to compute certain thermal observables for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ holographic SCFTs arising on the worldvolume of $N$ M2-branes. We obtain results for the thermal free energy density on $S^1 \times \mathbb{R}^2$, the Casimir energy on $T^{2} \times \mathbb{R}$, and the three leading coefficients in the large temperature limit of the free energy on $S^1\times S^2$ valid to subleading order in the large $N$ limit. As a byproduct of our holographic analysis we also present a conjecture for the structure of the large temperature expansion of the thermal free energy of general 3d CFTs on $S^1\times S^2$.

AdS$_7$ Black Holes from Rotating M5-branes

We construct a general asymptotically locally AdS$_7$ stationary black hole solution of 7d maximal gauged supergravity with three angular momenta and two electric charges. When embedded in 11d supergravity the black hole describes the backreaction of $N$ coincident rotating M5-branes. We study the thermodynamic properties of the black hole and present explicit expressions for its entropy, energy, electric charges, and angular momenta. We show that in the supersymmetric limit of the solution its entropy and on-shell action precisely agree with the result for the path integral of the holographically dual 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ SCFT on $S^1\times S^5$ to leading order in the large $N$ limit.

Large $N$ Partition Functions of 3d Holographic SCFTs

We study the $S^1\times\Sigma_{\mathfrak g}$ topologically twisted index and the squashed sphere partition function of various 3d $\mathcal N\geq2$ holographic superconformal field theories arising from M2-branes. Employing numerical techniques in combination with well-motivated conjectures we provide compact closed-form expressions valid to all orders in the perturbative $1/N$ expansion for these observables. We also discuss the holographic implications of our results for the topologically twisted index for the dual M-theory Euclidean path integral around asymptotically AdS$_4$ solutions of 11d supergravity. In Lorentzian signature this leads to a prediction for the corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a class of static asymptotically AdS$_4$ BPS black holes.

Wrapped M5-branes and AdS$_5$ Black Holes

We use consistent truncations in supergravity to show that the backreaction of $N$ rotating M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface leads to asymptotically AdS$_5$ black hole solutions of 11d supergravity. We discuss the thermodynamic properties of these black holes focusing on their supersymmetric limit. The Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the supersymmetric black holes scales as $N^3$ and can be reproduced by the superconformal index of the holographically dual 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs of class $\mathcal{S}$.

Microscopics of de Sitter Entropy from Precision Holography

We calculate quantum corrections to the entropy of four-dimensional de Sitter space induced by higher-derivative terms in the gravitational action and by one-loop effects. Employing the intertwinement in semiclassical gravity of Euclidean de Sitter and anti-de Sitter saddles, we embed effective de Sitter gravity theories in M-theory and express the entropy in terms of the regularized Euclidean anti-de Sitter action on an auxiliary $\mathrm{EAdS}_4 \times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$ background. We conjecture that the partition function of the holographically dual 3d ABJM CFT determines the explicit form of the corrections to the de Sitter entropy. This includes a logarithmic term, the coefficient of which, we show, agrees with an independent one-loop calculation around the $-S^4 \times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$ Euclidean de Sitter saddle. This provides evidence that the microscopic degrees of freedom behind the entropy of four-dimensional de Sitter space in gravitational theories with a holographic dual description are encapsulated by the path integral of the Euclidean CFT on the three-sphere.
