Almost surely smoothed scattering for cubic NLS

We consider cubic NLS in dimensions 2, 3, 4 and we prove that almost surely solutions with randomized initial data at low regularity scatter. Moreover, we establish some smoothing properties of the associated scattering operator and precise the rate of convergence.

The Second Picard iteration of NLS on the $2d$ sphere does not regularize Gaussian random initial data

We consider the Wick ordered cubic Schrödinger equation (NLS) posed on the two-dimensional sphere, with initial data distributed according to a Gaussian measure. We show that the second Picard iteration does not improve the regularity of the initial data in the scale of the classical Sobolev spaces. This is in sharp contrast with the Wick ordered NLS on the two-dimensional tori, a model for which we know from the work of Bourgain that the second Picard iteration gains one half derivative. Our proof relies on identifying a singular part of the nonlinearity. We show that this singular part is responsible for a concentration phenomenon on a large circle (i.e. a stable closed geodesic), which prevents any regularization in the second Picard iteration.

A remark on randomization of a general function of negative regularity

In the study of partial differential equations (PDEs) with random initial data and singular stochastic PDEs with random forcing, we typically decompose a classically ill-defined solution map into two steps, where, in the first step, we use stochastic analysis to construct various stochastic objects. The simplest kind of such stochastic objects is the Wick powers of a basic stochastic term (namely a random linear solution, a stochastic convolution, or their sum). In the case of randomized initial data of a general function of negative regularity for studying nonlinear wave equations (NLW), we show necessity of imposing additional Fourier-Lebesgue regularity for constructing Wick powers by exhibiting examples of functions slightly outside $L^2(\mathbb T^d)$ such that the associated Wick powers do not exist. This shows that probabilistic well-posedness theory for NLW with general randomized initial data fails in negative Sobolev spaces (even with renormalization). Similar examples also apply to stochastic NLW and stochastic nonlinear heat equations with general white-in-time stochastic forcing, showing necessity of appropriate Fourier-Lebesgue $γ$-radonifying regularity in the construction of the Wick powers of the associated stochastic convolution.

Blow-up for the 1D cubic NLS

We consider the 1D cubic NLS on $\mathbb R$ and prove a blow-up result for functions that are of borderline regularity, i.e. $H^s$ for any $s<-\frac 12$ for the Sobolev scale and $\mathcal F L^\infty$ for the Fourier-Lebesgue scale. This is done by identifying at this regularity a certain functional framework from which solutions exit in finite time. This functional framework allows, after using a pseudo-conformal transformation, to reduce the problem to a large-time study of a periodic Schrödinger equation with non-autonomous cubic nonlinearity. The blow-up result corresponds to an asymptotic completeness result for the new equation. We prove it using Bourgain's method and exploiting the oscillatory nature of the coefficients involved in the time-evolution of the Fourier modes. Finally, as an application we exhibit singular solutions of the binormal flow. More precisely, we give conditions on the curvature and the torsion of an initial smooth curve such that the constructed solutions generate several singularities in finite time.

Global well-posedness of the 2D nonlinear Schrödinger equation with multiplicative spatial white noise on the full space

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with multiplicative spatial white noise and an arbitrary polynomial nonlinearity on the two-dimensional full space domain. We prove global well-posedness by using a gauge-transform introduced by Hairer and Labbé (2015) and constructing the solution as a limit of solutions to a family of approximating equations. This paper extends a previous result by Debussche and Martin (2019) with a sub-quadratic nonlinearity.

Uniqueness and non-uniqueness of the Gaussian free field evolution under the two-dimensional Wick ordered cubic wave equation

We study the nonlinear wave equation (NLW) on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb T^2$ with Gaussian random initial data on $H^s(\mathbb T^2) \times H^{s-1}(\mathbb T^2)$, $s < 0$, distributed according to the base Gaussian free field $μ$ associated with the invariant Gibbs measure studied by Thomann and the first author (2020). In particular, we investigate the approximation property of the corresponding solution by smooth (random) solutions. Our main results in this paper are two-fold. (i) We show that the solution map for the renormalized cubic NLW defined on the Gaussian free field $μ$ is the unique extension of the solution map defined for smoothed Gaussian initial data obtained by mollification, independent of mollification kernels. (ii) We also show that there is a regularization of the Gaussian initial data so that the corresponding smooth solutions almost surely have no limit in the natural topology. This second result in particular states that one can not use arbitrary smooth approximation for the renormalized cubic NLW dynamics. As a preliminary step for proving (ii), we establish a (deterministic) norm inflation result at general initial data for the (unrenormalized) cubic NLW on $\mathbb T^d$ and $\mathbb R^d$ in negative Sobolev spaces, extending the norm inflation result by Christ, Colliander, and Tao (2003).

Stochastic nonlinear wave dynamics on compact surfaces

We study the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear wave equations (NLW) with random data and/or stochastic forcing on a two-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. (i) We first study the defocusing stochastic damped NLW driven by additive space-time white-noise, and with initial data distributed according to the Gibbs measure. By introducing a suitable space-dependent renormalization, we prove local well-posedness of the renormalized equation. Bourgain's invariant measure argument then allows us to establish almost sure global well-posedness and invariance of the Gibbs measure for the renormalized stochastic damped NLW. (ii) Similarly, we study the random data defocusing NLW (without stochastic forcing), and establish the same results as in the previous setting. (iii) Lastly, we study the stochastic NLW without damping. By introducing a space-time dependent renormalization, we prove its local well-posedness with deterministic initial data in all subcritical spaces. These results extend the corresponding recent results on the two-dimensional torus obtained by (i) Gubinelli-Koch-Oh-Tolomeo (2018), (ii) Oh-Thomann (2017), and (iii) Gubinelli-Koch-Oh (2018), to a general class of compact manifolds. The main ingredient is the Green's function estimate for the Laplace-Beltrami operator in this setting to study regularity properties of stochastic terms appearing in each of the problems.

Transport of Gaussian measures with exponential cut-off for Hamiltonian PDEs

We show that introducing an exponential cut-off on a suitable Sobolev norm facilitates the proof of quasi-invariance of Gaussian measures with respect to Hamiltonian PDE flows and allows us to establish the exact Jacobi formula for the density. We exploit this idea in two different contexts, namely the periodic fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation with dispersion~$γ>1$ and the periodic one dimensional quintic defocussing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). For the BBM equation we study the transport of the cut-off Gaussian measures on fractional Sobolev spaces, while for the NLS equation we study the measures based on the modified energies introduced by Planchon-Visciglia and the third author. Moreover for the BBM equation we also show almost sure global well-posedness for data in~$C^\a(\T)$ for arbitrarily small~$\a>0$ and invariance of the Gaussian measure associated with the $H^{γ/2}(\T)$ norm.

Weak universality results for a class of nonlinear wave equations

We study the weak universality of the two-dimensional fractional nonlinear wave equation. For a sequence of Hamiltonians of high-degree potentials scaling to the fractional $Φ_2^4$, we first establish a \emph{sufficient and almost necessary} criteria for the convergence of invariant measures to the fractional $Φ_2^4$. Then we prove the convergence result for the sequence of associated wave dynamics to the (renormalized) cubic wave equation. Our constraint on the fractional index is independent of the degree of the nonlinearity. This extends the result of Gubinelli-Koch-Oh [Renormalisation of the two-dimensional stochastic nonlinear wave equations, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 370 (2018)] to a situation where we do not have a local Cauchy theory with highly supercritical nonlinearities.

Quasi-invariance of Gaussian measures for the periodic Benjamin-Ono-BBM equation

The BBM equation is a Hamiltonian PDE which revealed to be a very interesting test-model to study the transformation property of Gaussian measures along the flow. In this paper we study the BBM equation with critical dispersion (which is a Benjamin-Ono type model). We prove that the image of the Gaussian measures supported on fractional Sobolev spaces of increasing regularity are absolutely continuous, but we cannot identify the density, for which new ideas are needed.

Concerning the pathological set in the context of probabilistic well-posedness

We prove a complementary result to the probabilistic well-posedness for the nonlinear wave equation. More precisely, we show that there is a dense set $S$ of the Sobolev space of super-critical regularity such that (in sharp contrast with the probabilistic well-posedness results) the family of global smooth solutions, generated by the convolution with some approximate identity of the elements of $S$, does not converge in the space of super-critical Sobolev regularity.

Quasi-invariant Gaussian measures for the nonlinear wave equation in three dimensions

We prove quasi-invariance of Gaussian measures supported on Sobolev spaces under the dynamics of the three-dimensional defocusing cubic nonlinear wave equation. As in the previous work on the two-dimensional case, we employ a simultaneous renormalization on the energy functional and its time derivative. Two new ingredients in the three-dimensional case are (i) the construction of the weighted Gaussian measures, based on a variational formula for the partition function inspired by Barashkov and Gubinelli (2018), and (ii) an improved argument in controlling the growth of the truncated weighted Gaussian measures, where we combine a deterministic growth bound of solutions with stochastic estimates on random distributions.

Refined probabilistic global well-posedness for the weakly dispersive NLS

We continue our study of the cubic fractional NLS with very weak dispersion $α>1$ and data distributed according to the Gibbs measure. We construct the natural strong solutions for $α>α_0=\frac{31-\sqrt{233}}{14}\approx 1.124$ which is strictly smaller than $\frac{8}{7}$, the threshold beyond which the first nontrivial Picard iteration has no longer the Sobolev regularity needed for the deterministic well-posedness theory. This also improves our previous result in Sun-Tzvetkov \cite{Sun-Tz2}. We rely on recent ideas of Bringmann \cite{Bringmann} and Deng-Nahmod-Yue \cite{Deng2}. In particular we adapt to our situation the new resolution ansatz in \cite{Deng2} which captures the most singular frequency interaction parts in the $X^{s,b}$ type space. To overcome the difficulties caused by the weakly dispersive effect, our specific strategy is to benefit from the "almost" transport effect of these singular parts and to exploit their $L^{\infty}$ as well as the Fourier-Lebesgue property in order to inherit the random feature from the linear evolution of high frequency portions.

Probabilistic local well-posedness of the cubic nonlinear wave equation in negative Sobolev spaces

We study the three-dimensional cubic nonlinear wave equation (NLW) with random initial data below $L^2(\mathbb{T}^3)$. By considering the second order expansion in terms of the random linear solution, we prove almost sure local well-posedness of the renormalized NLW in negative Sobolev spaces. We also prove a new instability result for the defocusing cubic NLW without renormalization in negative Sobolev spaces, which is in the spirit of the so-called triviality in the study of stochastic partial differential equations. More precisely, by studying (un-renormalized) NLW with given smooth deterministic initial data plus a certain truncated random initial data, we show that, as the truncation is removed, the solutions converge to $0$ in the distributional sense for any deterministic initial data.

Quasi-invariance of low regularity Gaussian measures under the gauge map of the periodic derivative NLS

The periodic DNLS gauge is an anticipative map with singular generator which revealed crucial in the study of the periodic derivative NLS. We prove quasi-invariance of the Gaussian measure on $L^2(\T)$ with covariance $[1+(-\D)^{s}]^{-1}$ under these transformations for any $s>\frac12$. This extends previous achievements by Nahmod, Ray-Bellet, Sheffield and Staffilani (2011) and Genovese, Lucà and Valeri (2018), who proved the result for integer values of the regularity parameter $s$.

Two dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with spatial white noise potential and fourth order nonlinearity

We consider NLS on $\T^2$ with multiplicative spatial white noise and nonlinearity between cubic and quartic. We prove global existence, uniqueness and convergence almost surely of solutions to a family of properly regularized and renormalized approximating equations. In particular we extend a previous result by A. Debussche and H. Weber available in the cubic and sub-cubic setting.

Stochastic quantization of Liouville conformal field theory

We study a nonlinear stochastic heat equation forced by a space-time white noise on closed surfaces, with nonlinearity $e^{βu}$. This equation corresponds to the stochastic quantization of the Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) measure. (i) We first revisit the construction of the LQG measure in Liouville conformal field theory (LCFT) in the $L^2$ regime $0<β<\sqrt{2}$. This uniformizes in this regime the approaches of David-Kupiainen-Rhodes-Vargas (2016), David-Rhodes-Vargas (2016) and Guillarmou-Rhodes-Vargas (2019) which treated the case of a closed surface with genus 0, 1 and $> 1$ respectively. Moreover, our argument shows that this measure is independent of the approximation procedure for a large class of smooth approximations. (ii) We prove almost sure global well-posedness of the parabolic stochastic dynamics, and invariance of the measure under this stochastic flow. In particular, our results improve previous results obtained by Garban (2020) in the cases of the sphere and the torus with their canonical metric, and are new in the case of closed surfaces with higher genus.
