Thermalization in a closed quantum system from randomized dynamics

The emergence of statistical mechanics from quantum dynamics is conventionally understood through quantum chaos, the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH), and canonical typicality, which together explain the thermal behavior of local observables in quantum many-body systems. We provide a distinct mechanism in which, for a quantum many-body system under strong random perturbation, the chaotic behavior of the system's eigenvectors and a constraint on the total energy directly generate a canonical ensemble for the entire system. The canonical ensemble occurs as the first moment of the Porter-Thomas distribution of the system's chaotic eigenstates, and the constraint on the total energy sets the temperature in the ensemble. This yields canonically distributed expectation values without invoking ETH, a microcanonical ensemble, or a subsystem-bath partition for local and global observables. We numerically demonstrate the mechanism for the 1D transverse-field Ising model by showing canonically distributed eigenstate projectors and spin-spin correlators with distinctive temperature dependence of the correlation length. An implementation of this thermalization approach on a quantum computer can be utilized for thermal state preparation.

Upper bound on $T_c$ in a strongly coupled electron-boson superconductor

Migdal-Eliashberg theory of boson-mediated superconductivity contains a $\sqrtλ$ divergence in the critical temperature $T_c$ for strong electron-boson coupling $λ$. In the conventional Migdal-Eliashberg theory, the strong-coupling regime can be accessed only in the limit that $λ_E = λ\, ω_D/\varepsilon_F\ll1$, where $ω_D$ is the Debye frequency and $\varepsilon_F$ is the Fermi energy. Here we go beyond this restriction in the context of the two-dimensional Yukawa-SYK (Y-SYK) model, which is solvable for arbitrary values of $λ_E$. We find that $T_c\approx 0.18 \,ω_D \sqrtλ$ for large $λ$, provided $λ_E$ remains small, and crosses over to a universal value of $T_c \approx 0.04\, \varepsilon_F$ for large $λ_E$. The saturation of $T_c$ is due to a self-consistent account of the boson dynamics for large $λ_E$ and remains valid provided the vertex corrections are negligible. Depending on the value of $λ$, this self-consistent approach leads to pairing that describes multiple classes of quantum critical electronic systems. These results demonstrate how the $\sqrtλ$ growth of $T_c$ in Migdal-Eliashberg theory saturates to a universal value independent of $λ$ and $ω_D$, providing an upper bound on the critical temperature at strong electron-boson coupling.

Solvable model for a charge-$4e$ superconductor

A charge-$4e$ superconductor forms due to the condensation of quartets of electrons. While in previous works the mechanism for the formation of charge-$4e$ superconductivity has been analyzed in terms of the binding of Cooper pairs in unconventional superconductors, its properties in the fermionic sector have not been studied systematically due to its inherently interacting nature even at the mean-field level. Here we propose a solvable model for a charge-$4e$ superconductor -- a spinful version of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with an anomalous quartic term. We show that the ground state is gapless and resembles a heavy Fermi liquid. We analytically solve for the superfluid density and show that it is perturbative in the strength of the charge-$4e$ order parameter, in sharp contrast with a regular (charge-$2e$) superconductor. Upon lowering temperature, we show that the correlation between charge-$4e$ order and regular interaction terms can drive a first-order phase transition to a charge-$2e$ superconducting state.

Gapless odd-frequency superconductivity induced by the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

We show that a single-fermion quantum dot acquires odd-frequency Gor'kov anomalous averages in proximity to strongly correlated Majorana zero modes, described by the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Despite the presence of finite anomalous pairing, the superconducting gap vanishes for the intermediate coupling strength between the quantum dot and Majoranas. The increase of the coupling leads to smooth suppression of the original quasiparticles. This effect might be used as a characterization tool for recently proposed tabletop realizations of the SYK model.

First order dipolar phase transition in the Dicke model with infinitely coordinated frustrating interaction

We found analytically a first order quantum phase transition in the Cooper pair box array of $N$ low-capacitance Josephson junctions capacitively coupled to a resonant photon in a microwave cavity. The Hamiltonian of the system maps on the extended Dicke Hamiltonian of $N$ spins one-half with infinitely coordinated antiferromagnetic (frustrating) interaction. This interaction arises from the gauge-invariant coupling of the Josephson junctions phases to the vector potential of the resonant photon field. In $N \gg 1$ semiclassical limit, we found a critical coupling at which ground state of the system switches to the one with a net collective electric dipole moment of the Cooper pair boxes coupled to superradiant equilibrium photonic condensate. This phase transition changes from the first to second order if the frustrating interaction is switched off. A self-consistently `rotating' Holstein-Primakoff representation for the Cartesian components of the total superspin is proposed, that enables to trace both the first and the second order quantum phase transitions in the extended and standard Dicke models respectively.
