Spin splitting of relativistic particles in 3D

The behavior of relativistic particles in an electric and/or magnetic field is considered in the general case when the direction of propagation may differ from the direction of the field. A special attention is paid to the spin splitting and the ensuing Larmor precession frequency of both neutral and charged particles. For both neutral and charged particles, the Larmor frequency shows a longitudinal motional red shift. For a neutral particle, there is a dynamical upper bound, which depends on both the mass and the transverse momentum of the particle; moreover, the transverse motion leads to a blue shift of the Larmor frequency. For a charged particle, the longitudinal motional decrease of the spin splitting is determined by the formation of Landau levels and it has no upper limit. Unlike the nonrelativistic limit, the relativistic spin splitting depends on the Landau levels and decreases for higher Landau levels, thereby signalling the presence of a Landau ladder red shift effect.

Variable Ultra-broadband and Narrowband Composite Polarization Retarders

We propose and experimentally demonstrate novel types of composite sequences of half-wave and quarter-wave polarization retarders, either permitting operation at ultra-broad spectral bandwidth or narrow bandwidth. The retarders are composed of stacked standard half-wave retarders and quarter-wave retarders of equal thickness. To our knowledge, these home-built devices outperform all commercially available compound retarders, made of several birefringent materials.

Zitterbewegung of neutral relativistic particles in static longitudinal fields

Zitterbewegung of neutral relativistic particles propagating along a constant magnetic and/or electric field is studied. It is shown that spin Zitterbewegung, when superimposed on the Larmor precession frequency, leads to a beating pattern. The existence of a forbidden frequency of spin precession is predicted. Modifications of position and velocity Zitterbewegung due to lifted spin degeneracy manifested in the appearance of longitudinal and transversal Zitterbewegung, each with two Zitterbewegung frequencies and resulting beating patterns, are reported.

Relativistic effects for spin splitting of neutral particles: Upper bound and motional narrowing

We explore the properties of spin splitting for neutral particles possessing electric and magnetic dipole moments propagating in an electromagnetic field. Two notable features of the spin splitting and the associated Larmor precession are found, which are consequences of special relativity. First, we report the existence of an upper limit of spin splitting equal to twice the rest energy of the particle, and a corresponding upper limit for the Larmor precession frequency. Second, we predict the noninvariance of the spin splitting and the corresponding Larmor frequency with respect to Lorentz boosts, which bears resemblance to the classical Doppler effect.

Trapped ion emulation of electric dipole moment of neutral relativistic particles

The electric dipole moments of various neutral elementary particles, such as neutron, neutrinos, certain hypothetical dark matter particles and others, are predicted to exist by the standard model of high energy physics and various extensions of it. However, the predicted values are beyond the present experimental capabilities. We propose to simulate and emulate the electric dipole moment of neutral relativistic particles and the ensuing effects in the presence of electrostatic field by emulation of an extended Dirac equation in ion traps.

Dynamical suppression of unwanted transition paths in multistate quantum systems

We introduce a method to suppress unwanted transition channels, even without knowing their couplings, and achieve perfect population transfer in multistate quantum systems by the application of composite pulse sequences. Unwanted transition paths may be present due to imperfect light polarization, stray electromagnetic fields, misalignment of quantization axis, spatial inhomogeneity of trapping fields, off-resonant couplings, etc. Compensation of simultaneous deviations in polarization, pulse area, and detuning is demonstrated. The accuracy, the flexibility and the robustness of this technique make it suitable for high-fidelity applications in quantum optics and quantum information processing.

Broadband Faraday Isolator

Driving on an analogy with the technique of composite pulses in quantum physics, we propose a broadband Faraday rotator and thus a broadband optical isolator, which is composed of sequences of ordinary Faraday rotators and achromatic quarter-wave plates rotated at the predetermined angles.

Achromatic multiple beam splitting by adiabatic passage in optical waveguides

A novel variable achromatic optical beam splitter with one input and $N$ output waveguide channels is introduced. The physical mechanism of this multiple beam splitter is adiabatic passage of light between neighboring optical waveguides in a fashion reminiscent of the technique of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in quantum physics. The input and output waveguides are coupled via a mediator waveguide and the ratios of the light intensities in the output channels are controlled by the couplings of the respective waveguides to the mediator waveguide. Due to its adiabatic nature the beam splitting efficiency is robust to variations in the experimental parameters.

Mid-range adiabatic wireless energy transfer via a mediator coil

A technique for efficient mid-range wireless energy transfer between two coils via a mediator coil is proposed. By varying the coil frequencies three resonances are created: emitter-mediator (EM), mediator-receiver (MR) and emitter-receiver (ER). If the frequency sweeps are adiabatic and such that the ER resonance precedes the MR resonance, the energy flows sequentially along the chain emitter-mediator-receiver. If the MR resonance precedes the ER resonance, then the energy flows directly from the emitter to the receiver via the ER resonance; then the losses from the mediator are suppressed. This technique is robust to noise, resonant constraints and external interferences.

Complete population transfer in a three-state quantum system by a train of pairs of coincident pulses

A technique for complete population transfer between the two end states $\ket{1}$ and $\ket{3}$ of a three-state quantum system with a train of $N$ pairs of resonant and coincident pump and Stokes pulses is introduced. A simple analytic formula is derived for the ratios of the pulse amplitudes in each pair for which the maximum transient population $P_2(t)$ of the middle state $\ket{2}$ is minimized, $P_2^{\max}=\sin^2(π/4N)$. It is remarkable that, even though the pulses are on exact resonance, $P_2(t)$ is damped to negligibly small values even for a small number of pulse pairs. The population dynamics resembles generalized $π$-pulses for small $N$ and stimulated Raman adiabatic passage for large $N$ and therefore this technique can be viewed as a bridge between these well-known techniques.

Scalable uniform construction of highly-conditional quantum gates

We present a scalable uniform technique for construction of highly conditional C$^n$-NOT quantum gates of trapped ion qubits, such as the Toffoli gate, without using ancilla states and circuits of an exorbitant number of concatenated one- and two-qubit gates. Apart from the initial dressing of the internal qubit states with vibrational phonons and the final restoration of the phonon ground state, our technique requires the application of just a single composite pulse on the target qubit and is applicable both in and outside the Lamb-Dicke regime. We design special narrowband composite pulses, which suppress all transitions but the conditional transition of the target qubit; moreover, these composite pulses significantly improve the spatial addressing selectivity.

Dynamical control and novel quantum phases in impurity doped linear ion crystals

We explore the behavior of the phonon number distribution in an heterogeneous linear ion crystal. The presence of ion species with different masses changes dramatically the transverse energy spectrum, in such a way that two eigenfrequencies become non-analytic functions of the mass ratio in the form of a sharp cusp. This non-analyticity induces a quantum phase transition between condensed and conducting phase of the transverse local phonons. In order to continuously vary the mass ratio we adiabatically modify a locally applied laser field, exerting optical dipole forces which reduces the effective mass.

Phase shifts in nonresonant coherent excitation

Far-off-resonant pulsed laser fields produce negligible excitation between two atomic states but may induce considerable phase shifts. The acquired phases are usually calculated by using the adiabatic-elimination approximation. We analyze the accuracy of this approximation and derive the conditions for its applicability to the calculation of the phases. We account for various sources of imperfections, ranging from higher terms in the adiabatic-elimination expansion and irreversible population loss to couplings to additional states. We find that, as far as the phase shifts are concerned, the adiabatic elimination is accurate only for a very large detuning. We show that the adiabatic approximation is a far more accurate method for evaluating the phase shifts, with a vast domain of validity; the accuracy is further enhanced by superadiabatic corrections, which reduce the error well below $10^{-4}$. Moreover, owing to the effect of adiabatic population return, the adiabatic and superadiabatic approximations allow one to calculate the phase shifts even for a moderately large detuning, and even when the peak Rabi frequency is larger than the detuning; in these regimes the adiabatic elimination is completely inapplicable. We also derive several exact expressions for the phases using exactly soluble two-state and three-state analytical models.

Simple implementation of a quantum search with trapped ions

We propose an ion trap implementation of Grover's quantum search algorithm for an unstructured database of arbitrary length N. The experimental implementation is appealingly simple because the linear ion trap allows for a straightforward construction, in a single interaction step and without a multitude of Hadamard transforms, of the reflection operator, which is the engine of the Grover algorithm. Consequently, a dramatic reduction in the number of the required physical steps takes place, to just O(\sqrt{N}), the same as the number of the mathematical steps. The proposed setup allows for demonstration of both the original (probabilistic) Grover search and its deterministic variation, and is remarkably robust to imperfections in the register initialization.

Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) Among Degenerate-Level Manifolds

We examine the conditions needed to accomplish stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) when the three levels (g, e and f) are degenerate, with arbitrary couplings contributing to the pump-pulse interaction (g - e) and to the Stokes-pulse interaction (e-f). We show that in general a sufficient condition for complete population removal from the g set of degenerate states for arbitrary, pure or mixed, initial state is that the degeneracies should not decrease along the sequence g, e and f. We show that when this condition holds it is possible to achieve the degenerate counterpart of conventional STIRAP, whereby adiabatic passage produces complete population transfer. Indeed, the system is equivalent to a set of independent three-state systems, in each of which a STIRAP procedure can be implemented. We describe a scheme of unitary transformations that produces this result. We also examine the cases when this degeneracy constraint does not hold, and show what can be accomplished in those cases. For example, for angular momentum states when the degeneracy of the g and f levels is less than that of the e level we show how a special choice for the pulse polarizations and phases can produce complete removal of population from the g set. Our scheme can be a powerful tool for coherent control in degenerate systems, because of its robustness when selective addressing of the states is not required or impossible. We illustrate the analysis with several analytically solvable examples, in which the degeneracies originate from angular momentum orientation, as expressed by magnetic sublevels.

Entanglement generation by adiabatic navigation in the space of symmetric multi-particle states

We propose a technique for robust and efficient navigation in the Hilbert space of entangled symmetric states of a multiparticle system with externally controllable linear and nonlinear collective interactions. A linearly changing external field applied along the quantization axis creates a network of well separated level crossings in the energy diagram of the collective states. One or more transverse pulsed fields applied at the times of specific level crossings induce adiabatic passage between these states. By choosing the timing of the pulsed field appropriately, one can transfer an initial product state of all N spins into (i) any symmetric state with n spin excitations and (ii) the N-particle analog of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state. This technique, unlike techniques using pulses of specific area, does not require precise knowledge of the number of particles and is robust against variations in the interaction parameters. We discuss potential applications in two-component Bose condensates and ion-trap systems.
